Around 500 climbers from around the world attempt to reach the summit every year, and for decades they have been leaving behind waste

Everest, the world’s highest mountain, has attracted thousands of adventurers and climbers ready to test their skills against the ultimate challenge. It is also where many took their last steps. Dubbed ‘Garbage Mountain’ in 2000, it has become a lightning rod by which to gauge humanity’s impact on natural sites, and according to local legislators, things are not going well.

What was supposed to be one of the most pristine places on Earth had in fact become a giant toilet. At one point, it was so bad that the air was filled with the smell of feces as the snow melted.
This is the problem facing Mount Everest as it grapples with an ever-increasing number of climbers – many of whom don’t bother to clean up after themselves.

I think the people that travel that distance and have the money to do this activity are the entitled types in their countries of origin. And yes, including the US where the average person does not have $400.00 for an emergency. This being said, don't they pride themselves to have a bit better education and moral compass to know better than to leave garbage all over the place?

everywhere elites go, they stink the place up,
and leave a nasty pile for others to clean up

If you want to know what Mount Everest smells like walk down any main Street in downtown Seattle, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Kansas City, etc, etc. And bingo the same familiar odor.

Corruption and incompetence. They need to take a couple of years off and just get people to collect all the waste - even if it has to be people from outside Nepal. Stop the profits and start the sanitation!

Guys! This is just an exaggeration. Human waste and animal waste are part of nature they are degradable and fertilizers. I agree some other waste as plastic and steel need to be recycled.

Amen
This poo-bag idea is unenforceable. Are they going to weight it at the exit and verify the nature of the content? They should charge a fee to provide sanitary installations and clean. I guess the fee part they already do, right?

ItsTheMailMan
I think Nepal should clean up it's tourist attraction, after all "Climbing Permit: Foreign climbers are required to obtain a climbing permit from Nepal. For the year 2023, the permit fee was $11,000. However, starting in 2025, the price will increase significantly to $15,000, which is a 36% bump." For $15K, they should do at least something.

For many years Nepal has charged a fee for climbers hoping to top Everest. This fee should have been used to pay for officials to enforce the (belated) regulations on disposal of waste and cleaning up. Instead this money has been used for the general coffers. The Nepalese economy gains a lot from climbing and trekking tourists - guiding fees, food, accommodation, etc., and banning such tourism would be very bad for the country. But Nepal does need to address how these activities can be made sustainable and how to better use the climbing fee.

I was at Base Camp in 1970. A garbage dump even then. The Jomson trail was an endless shoppery of Western canned beer and food. Well, Nepal, you want the money, you take the crap.

Maybe they should clean up. Some of the tourism revenue should be used for it. They can't just get the benefits and then cry because nobody cleans?

So, it becomes more and more like India... Nepal needs to take the matters in their hands (not literally, eww gross) and clean it up and make laws to prevent it from turning into India.

Like there is any trouble in preventing them from importing the plastic garbage. They could’ve stopped it from happening, if they really wanted to do so.

Mayan Eclipse
They should only be permitted to use paper bags, plates, straws and cutlery until they can prove they can respect nature

If these trashy scumbags don't return with full Pooh bags, make them go back up and get them. Lifetime prison in Kathmandu for any trash left on the mountain.

Everest climbing fee should 1000 times more than it is now, if not totally banned. But Nepalis' greed for tourist money cannot be banned.

People need to relieve themselves and most will not do the right thing (collect their own waste) unless compelled to do so. The problem is also with the government that is probably greedy and wants the revenues from exploiting this natural resource. Making laws is not enough. There has to be enforcement, too. Greed, like all matters immoral, stinks.

Close it down! Nepal is responsible as much as anything. They want that money that the climbers pay. So they never even consider shutting down the mountain all together until the whole thing is completely cleaned. Thereafter, the mountain will be re-opened under stricter rules ENFORCED. That is how to do it. No more futzing around. Just do it!

Only the well to do can afford the climb and leave the trash. It’s the same on our highways. Glass bottles of Starbucks coffee frappe are frequently discarded items in my neighborhood. Jettisoned from teslas, Audis, and new pickups. Fast food wrappers from locations a hundred miles away. Humans are really piggy, matter of fact humans aren’t as clean as hogs. I sympathize with having to gather dead bodies, oxygen bottles, excrement, and assorted trash at 20,000 plus feet. Shameful.

Follow the example of the Philippines which banned the local and foreign tourist from visiting the famous Boracay Island for six months to clean up.

It's about time. The whole mountain needs cleaning up the bodies & garbage and leave the place the way you found it. If you can't use it properly charter a helicopter till you do.

Are they also going to collect wild animal feces. Oh wait animals cannot pay fees so their feces are ok. Bunch of savages got test of money and lost their mind.

Jeremy Prophit
ironic most of the climbers are lefty climate freaks and pollute and leave their trash. Im glad they get to pay $50k to lug their waste up a mountain and back down. very satisfying

Only money talks. It is the cost that creates the problem as it leaves no profit to the organisers if they'll clean up. Do what the Aboriginals did in Australia at their sacred rock the Uluru. They stop the claiming.

another_aussie
what used to be the ultimate test for man, has turned into something as mundane as waiting for a bus, follow the conga line to the top, keep to the right of the trash pile, don't disturb the corpses you come across along the way, get to the top, 30 seconds for a selfie, hurry up, there are people behind you waiting their turn.

Is it not possible to put skips in place and heli them in and out? Each climber can contribute a fee for this, and there is no reason why it cant be profitable

RichintheUS
The entire mountain should be shut down. No more climbers! Even though the government of Nepal will not get any profit from selling permits to climb. Shut it down, clean it up, leave it alone.

That is what we humans do. Go somewhere for no particular reason where it is impossible to live, only to permanently dump our excrements.

The biggest problem is the plastics and aluminum cans-not human waste. Feces is environmentally friendly it decays and goes as natural fertilizer.

It's not nature, it's Lego land mountains. Somewhere inside there's the old sewer system as this entire realm is a manufactured Lego land of brick and mortar with some top soil, trees and snow thrown on top.

What would one expect from "climbers" who must be very well-off in order to ascend Mt Everest? People of that class are not known for their social ethics or integrity. These mountains should be off-limits, period.

Mountaineers should have the decency to clean up behind themselves. Perhaps we should suggest some ET’s abduct some of the mountaineers on very long vacation lol

Disgusting mountain climbers. Nepal needs to make a law where mountain climbers have to pack out 5 kilo's of garbage for every kilo of garbage they pack in... be cleaned up in no time.

This horrible, a bunch of rich selfish tree hugers have destroyed this beautiful mountain. Tons of trash a thousands of used oxygen cylinders and dead bodies. What idiots.

Shameful and all for the sake of their own egos that they climbed Everest left upto me I'd ban it and clean up the mess then enforce the ban till the area recovers from human parasites

The trash is bad but human feces isn't a huge concern as it's biodegradable and fertilizes the ground.

climbing permits cost money. use that or increase the permit costs. keep the revenue generated by everest for everest not the lining of politicians and businessmens pockets.

The people that want to climb Mt. Everest these days remind me of these corporate weenies that buy a Harley Davidson thinking they are some bad a$$ rebel wannabe. They get their sherpa guides to practically carry them up the mountain and then return to thier cubes on Monday pretending to be Sir Edmund Hillery.

They could have let the himalayas rest for a year by closing it and clearing out the rubbish. But they can't bcos they are addicted to charging hefty fees for climbing.

This goes beyond Mount Everest even. The store I shop at so happens to be located right next to a ton of fast food joints. Okay, whatever, right? Well, people eat in the store parking lot and throw all their waste on the ground. You'll find bags, containers, condiment wrappers, etc... all over. No consideration at all

Although I realize that they need more food at those heights, still, compare this with what the average backpacker on the Appalachian Trail takes on the 45 day trek. This has become a status symbol climb with the attached mindset rather than true “climbers”.

I know what a dirty hippie is. You will rue the day that you allowed them into your neighborhood or onto your mountain. Ironically, at least in inverse to the liberal media's narrative, its actually conservative types, hunters and outdoorsmen, who are more respectful of nature then usury dollar liberals with a sense of privilege.

Ther's a way to fix it. Apoint camping sites and let all climbers pay contribution to build an cable car network for garbage man to clean up these designated camping sites. Climbers also have to report themselfs at these camping sites.

The locals I met in Nepal around 20 years ago used to call the Annapurna Trail the Coca-cola trail as many hikers would stop and buy that specific sickly pop and discard over the shoulder the empty Can, Bottle or whatever while on their mission for some street cred back home.
