But I’m hard pressed to see your point here. Yes, what you said is correct. Shooting down Iranian drones vs. shooting down Russian drones is a very diferent scenario from escalation pov.

2022 is a much different calculus. On one hand the unified Western response has worked as a deterrent on China already. They are certainly looking at how West banded together over Ukraine. Afaik this is the assesment if US military and intelligence leadership. On the other hand the prolonged conflict is exposing Western weaknesses, with Trump-like figure scrapping the aid.
It’s not a joke to get directly involved in the war. While countries have been too timid imho getting actively involved with NATO troops is another thing altogether. Russia already was close to resorting to nuclear weapons when Ukrainian forces did their fantastic wins back in the day. That would probably call for a retaliation from the Wedt. No one will win if this thing escalates to WWIII.
I want Ukraine to win, and to receive all the support it needs. They need much more armaments and money. But you can’t be reckless about it.

It is two different scenarios tbh. Russia launches the suicide drones from Russia, where they have complete air superiority and layered air defense. Then they fly over ukraine where russia still has some semblance of air superiority and they air defenses are still somewhat in reach. If Ukraine tried to shoot down to shoot down cruise missiles before they entered Ukraine like we just saw in Israel, they would most certainly be shot down. Not saying that EU jets would not help Ukraine but its really apples and oranges, Iran’s drones/missiles were shot down over third countries that allowed the use of their airspace as well as participated in shooting them down. Belarus would probably not be so willing to help NATO jets shoot down russian drones over their airspace

Still in reach of russia air defense/planes, russia’s air force makes irans look like a amateur force. Ukraine does stop quite a few of them with gun spaa and patriot/soviet air defenses as well, they just have a far larger country and far few air defense systems/air force than israel. If all of nato coordinated with ukraine and helped shoot down the drones/missiles with planes they likely would be able to with no large difficulties , albeit with casualties to russian air defenses/aircraft which would likely escalate the conflict. Suicide drones are really a game changer because even if they are shot down by a plane’s gun, the fuel used to get the plane next to the drone is more expensive than the drone itself. If a missile is used, it is orders of magnitude more expensive than the drones powered by basic inertial guidance/cheap motorcycle engines.
