Why do most rich Indians have a lighter skin tone than relatively poor Indians?
This is similar to saying that there are no black people who are rich in America :),which is of course, far from reality.
I will dig into the caste system for answering this, don’t start trolling me please!
Fairer people belonged to a higher caste and darker people belonged to a lower caste(this is pretty common in Northern parts of India).
Over the years,the upper caste people ended up gathering more wealth,contacts and resources.
All the upper caste people therefore have access to a better education,more funds and therefore have better opportunities available to them .

The question leans into one of the generalization categories. While I tend to agree on the answers for air conditioning better food etc, we also need to look at a couple more items.
I will be fair, the country is pretty obsessed with skin color and hence the fair and lovely ads all over the media. But not everyone is as obsessed. We have a large percentage of wealthy houses which have been deemed wealthy for generations down south that do not look of the lighter skin tone. Something that the genes and the overall environment of living nearer to the equator brings about.

And then there are some nouveau riche folks up north or in central zones who just have to get themselves the bleach treatment or the multani mitti treatment to make themselves fair skin toned.
So whether you are rick or poor you can be dark skinned or light skinned percentage would differ according to the mindset not by need. Habits like working under the sun, and eating regularly grown items would also have an impact but those are just the means to which a person can afford.

Wealth and success has nothing to do with skin color but it has pretty much to do with education.Aryans ruled India for thousands of years.Their caste systsm did not let the native Indians(who are dusky to dark brown in color)to study and hence they got Educated only after Great humanist Mr. BHIM RAO Ambedkar’s consitution.They were poor and uneducated as it was not allowed for shudras to acquire wealth,no matter if it comes from their hard work and mostly doing labour in sunlight hence darker.Now they got educated recently so it will take time to see rich and successful dark people in every field,including media,bollywood,corporate and businesses.

One more interesting fact is that Aryans were from Euro-Aisa so they were white.They imposed castism on Indian natives. Once my grandfather told me that his grandfather had told him that Brahmans have right to choose bride from all three lower caste(thakur,baniya and shudra) if he feel that the girl is beautiful.Then comes Thakurs,they could choose from remaining 2 caste.Same is for baniya.But Shudra were only allowed to choose from shudra community only.That is why you see Brahmans are mainly beautiful features wise and whilte color wise.

Richness and education etc has got nothing to do with colour of the skin. In India North Indians who are fair in couloir compared to South Indians are rich because of many factors. I categorise them in the following ways.
Noth India has fertile land from Punjab to Bengal and farmers have huge land holdings and the rivers flow in the plain making a vast belt of fertile lands. Farmers in north are rich. When compared to south India farmers , where the rivers are not long and flow in rocky strata making agriculture only in certaipckets , most of the land holders depend on rain fall in water source areas ( southern Maharashtra, northern Karnataka .
Delhi being the capital of the country there are rich class due to various reasons, connections either in business , or political clout etc mostly North Indians who are seen in many places of social gathering gives a feeling that rich are fair coloured

Coming to indusries most of the heavy indusries and ancilarries are located in North India around NCR and In Gujarat and in Maharashtra and most of the owners are Punjabis, Marwaris or Gujaratis who are fair in colour.
The film world which again spins lot of money , the actors and actresses are from north having fair colour attributes to rich are white.
In south India except Andhra and Telangana where there is a chunk of very rich people the rest of south India has not big industries ( even if there is they are central govt owned )
so most of the salaried class are South Indian community in Big industries through out the country.
There are stinking rich people who,are dark skinnned but they are not in public life.

Skin tone is not connected with personal wealth. There are many communities in India who have dark skin tone but the entire community is prosperous and rich. Skin tone is determined by genes and not by outwordly treatments. However, a wealthy person in general spends much more than a poor person on diet, so his skin may have lesser tan, natural glowing skin even on a dark skin tone. It is also possible that a fair person with poor diet and fluid intake may not look as attractive as a healthy person with darker tone.
Even a poor person with a balanced diet, following regular physical exercise regime, absistence from drinking and smoking will have a healthy facial appearance whatever be his skin tone.It is the healthy glowing skin that is attractive and not the skin tone.

I am surprised as most people are talking about casteism and other things. Let me be clear, racism never existed before European imperialism began, everything related to skin color began after Europeans began colonizing other countries. The fact is Europeans ruled entire earth and they are ruling it still now, you can see how European problems are always treated as world problems
It’s all about history, winners are the ones who’ll define how people should live. That’s the reason why Fair skin is given much importance. Had Africa colonized the world, trust be dark skin would be a sign of superiority.

This seems weird based on what I heard with south indians averagely more likely to be richer in their region. And bring more exposed to sunlight and hot weather in history to become darker skinned.
Yes there are dark and light mixed up a lot , but still there is a different perception and South /north indians are have also different facial features besides just skin.

Sadly, because of racism, people with fair skin often get better jobs than those with darker skin.

Because people want to look rich and enjoy the benefits that come with it, they sometimes use tricks like tanning salons in cold places or fairness creams in warm places to cheat their way to a certain skin tone.
