They may have been the largest but the claims they they successful built and sailed 400 foot long super ships, which disappered leaving no archaeologic evidence has to be a “Tall Ship Tale”.

Could you make such a ship? Usually ships are made on ways out of the water until a water tight hull is created. So there should be some evidence that such a shipyard existed. There is not.

Nor is there any evidence of docks that size. There is evidence of a large arsenal at Nanking but it has no space as wide as the Treasure ship, nor with a 400 plus foot slope to launch a ship that size.

Could you control that size ship in port? Currently 400′ ships coming into port require tugs or bow thrusters with at least a few hundred horse power and preferably thousands. In even a light wind just the side of a 400′ ship could generate a force that would overwhelm an oared “tugboat”.

The sea can be a very hostile place and it breaks steel ships into pieces even now . You make a steel keel 1000′ long by building a steel box and welding it all together with welds that are as strong as the steel, mostly.

How are you going to make a 400′ keel out of 100 foot trees? Splice 8 of them together with offset joins and connected them together with 4 inch diameter mahogany dowels? (These are called trunnels and are what was used for 250 foot ships but they are definitely weaker than the 12 by 12 beam.) That is not going to survive a gale. The forces of 20′ waves repetatively picking up and flexing a 400′ foot hull will crumple it into origami.

HMS Victory launched 1778 is 227 feet overall. Rebuilt because all wooden ships that size ‘hog' . This is about as big as they come in the days of iron men and wooden ships.

But there is archeologic evidence that Chinese shipwrights were world class.

Manila galleon - Wikipedia was the pinnacle of ship building in the 16th century- most were build by Chinese shipyards in Manila.

Yes and much larger in antiquity as well. Go back through all of Chinese naval history and their ships just dwarf anything Europe had even centuries later.

What the question is specifically talking about is the Ming Treasure fleets that sailed all the way to Africa in the 15th century.

This is a model of Zheng He's flagship.

Here it sailing next to his near contemporary Christopher Columbus. Columbus sailed about 50 years after Zheng He.

The Titanic was about twice as long but only half as wide.

These ships were designed to intimidate. I imagine they accomplished their goals. They were also armed with flamethrowers, cannon, bombs, etc. While excessive to say the least, these ships were meant to inspire awe. Nobody was ever going to see a fleet of massive ships like this approach and not completely lose their minds.

Getting a lot of coast hugging detractors. Here's a map of the routes. They hugged the coast to visit but when practical hit open ocean.

And for those who are stating the ships were not really that big, they are well recorded by not only Chinese but also by the people they visited. Indians, Malaysians,Egyptians, Ethiopians, etc all wrote about them. And we also have pieces of the ships and the shipyard excavations.

Actually poorly phrased question. Not all Chinese ships were larger than any others in the middle ages. The largest ships in the middle ages were Chinese, this is well documented. Some Roman ships in antiquity may have been larger.

Maybe (we don't really know because Ming Dynasty destroyed all of Zen-He's records).

But it shows that the Chinese don't really know how to make voyage on the high-seas, and are rather low in the seafaring technology. The currently speculated models of these "huge ships" are poorly designed ships that are going to be restricted to near-land voyages.

Yes, one could say that the Chinese were rulers of the sea as well. Take the ming dynasty explorer, Zheng He. His ships were much larger than the santa maria.

When the chinese junk ships were made, they were the largest ships ever made to date. They were not used extensively or throughout the entirety of the Middle Ages, but they built and subsequently dismantled some very large ships
