The reason why lichi is considered as hot is it contain very high level of sugar, which could result in a high risk of various inflammation if you having too much. Watermelon on the contrary, not that sweet, rich in water, which can really help you hydrated during the hot summer

Eddie Shen
I think a similar line of reasoning applies to avocado since it's a food rich in oils, which could also lead to various inflammations

You see, people in Sichuan eat hot pot in winter to keep warm, in summer to get rid of damp. After all.. it’s just an excuse to eat hotpot...

Hotpot is clearly the solution to everything ;)

We have a similiar recipe like Lü Tang in Italy (Sicily), which is named "Cuccia".

My Name Is Andong
It looks delicious! According to wiki, you are using wheatberries instead of mung beans, right?

Stefano King
@my Name Is Andong Yeah right, but it can be different from city to city.

Talon ViperChef
I'd say Barley Tea might be similar to what you mentioned as well?

In Iran we have the same culture about nature of food, traditional families serve the opposite nature of the food to balance the body, for example if you serve a salad which has cucumber and onion (both with cold nature), its common to serve saffron tea with sugar candy (we think saffron and sugar candy have warm nature)

but just like you I really cant find the line between these natures, and i can totally feel the effects of these natures. also there is another category wet or dry nature, which is alot harder to realize the difference between them.

I know the ingredients are a bit out there this time - your local Asian grocery store might have most of them. They will all last a long time if sealed well and stored in a cool and dry place. My smoked plums were 3 years old

My Name Is Andong haha, hibiscus flowers are everywhere in China- its the equivalent of putting dandelions in your tea. they’re also found in chinese supermarkets

If you need something to to with extra licorice root... if you have chest congestion, make a tea with it. Very effective at clearing you up. And naturally sweet by itself.

You can get most of the herbs from any pharmacy in Germany btw. Especially the hibiscus and liquorice root.

Andong it's soooo interesting because in Iran - where my ancestors are from - the concept of hot/cold foods is pretty much the same. Fish, cucumber, watermelons are "cold" foods for example and this is not related to any "temperature" of the food but general food classifications. I think a lot of countries in Asia, near east and far east, classify their foods by that standard! superinteresting, thanks!

Duan Lei
Anna Sade The culture exchange between China and Persia happened a lot. I think that is why we have the same concept of classification of food. One of the most popular Chinese KungFu dramas mentioned that a Kung Fu Group originated from Persia defeated all the other groups from China. That is the first time I heard Persia.

Yi Tian Tu Long Ji / Heaven Sword Dragon Sabre?

@duan Lei wow that's really interesting! Yes the cultural exchange is quite astonishing! We can be proud of it.

@Duan Le Makes sense. Persia has usually been the middleman on the Silk Road between Europe in the West and China, the Jupiter of the East.

Hibiscus tea is very popular in Latin America, for the same reasons. Cooling without being stimulating like regular iced tea.

Cold watemelon is also used in Central Asia to cool down! Hi from Kazakhstani! :) BTW everyone says that, but the quality of your videos is really outstanding!

We add coconut milk into the mung bean soup in Malaysia n Singapore. :-)

This concept was so foreign to me until a good friend came back from working in Shanghai. She told me about it and since then I've spoken to loads of people from all over Asia, that by default live by the hot/cold methodology. They don't even think about it. It was super strange for a European to learn about, but I do understand the idea. Great vid for us Europeans!

deathpyre42
Also, they taste good.

The irony is that humorism actually originated in Europe. It's from Greece. Obviously it has developed further and differently in China. Some of Aryuvedic medicine seems to have adopted it too. Some of the advice is the same in all 3 eg. not having honey too hot (probably because it kills the enzymes).

Andong, all the videos I have watched about Mung Beans say you need to sprout them first in water overnight. What are your thoughts on this?

woolfel
it's great to see you mention chinese theory about hot and cold foods. Most people that do videos about chinese foods have no clue about it and don't even realize that is a deep principle of chinese cuisine.

Watermelons are as well eaten in Spain during summer for cooling down. In fact it is the most common fruit because its season is during June and July.
