Clothing: Not much to say. Years ago Chinese people buy imported clothes or fly overseas to buy luxury brands. Now these brands are localized, even online and the prices are close (I mean, they are Made In China anyway…).
However, the mailing service in Shanghai is SUPERB. I am capitalizing because the shipping is nothing even the Amazon Prime’s members can imagine. Since Shanghai has a dense population it makes shipping companies easier to allocate their stocks. Typically anything you buy on Taobao can be shipped to your house within a day or two, FOR FREE.
Food: This is the most delightful part. Restaurants in both cities are highly diverse, but the pricing in Shanghai beats NYC. Oftentimes I will be fully satisfied with a two-dollar breakfast while going to one of the pricey and classy restaurants by the bond at night. Shanghai attracts the most authentic western style cuisine and even imports some of the Michelin 3-star restaurants from NYC.

The way people pay in Shanghai has been changed a lot. It seems that people go from cash to mobile-paying directly, while American people prefer to use credit cards a lot. Apple pay is widely accepted in the States as well but I see fewer people make transition to that.
Housing: Few people actually own a house or an apartment in NYC. In terms of pricing I think people in Shanghai struggle a lot to buy a house, while you can rent a decent and affordable place in NYC (considering the average income is higher in the state). Infrastructures are said to be more modern in Shanghai but I also find many places to be outdated. Many places in Shanghai did not catch up with its crazy development.
Transportation: No doubt Shanghai will beat NYC, not to say LA or SF. In Shanghai you have an extensive network of underground railway system with better maintenance and newer facilities than NYC. Another thing in Shanghai is the fast-growing bike-sharing services. I know NYC has citibikes but I doubt many people will use it considering the price. In Shanghai you can ride for 0.5 yuan for half an hour, which will almost certainly take you to the closet metro station and thus anywhere else in Shanghai.

I study in a small town in the US and have seen the most polite drivers. Most Americans will find driving in NYC annoying but I assure you, it’s much worse in Shanghai. We have bike-riders and motorcyclists breaking traffic rules, drivers ignoring other vehicles all the time. The public transportation is better in Shanghai but in terms of driving I would avoid doing that in Chinese cities.
Some other aspects: medical system. It is complicated since there is no sound medical system around the globe. It costs more to visit a doctor in NYC and you have to reserve in advance for a few weeks. In Shanghai I will have to wait at most two hours to meet with a doctor. Because of the mass population Chinese doctors are more efficient and experienced. They can often solve some petty and uncommon diseases. Surprisingly sad, there are unethical or uncertified hospitals in China (so-called Putian) that charge patients irresponsibly and probably cannot treat you. However, in terms of serious illnesses like cancer, rich people tend to visit the States. Sportsmen also seek better support in US. US doctors enjoy more advanced resources (medical research, better equippments) for treatment. So this is an even play.
That’s too much rumble said as I have lost direction in my argument. Hopefully this helps. I definitely love both cities but you can see the pros and cons through my comparison.

Modern China however is only 30–40 years old, its development is amazing in such a short time! China wanted to develop so they did everything according to their need of improving their life. Every system is new, maybe even the first in the world because they still focus on development. China can build a whole new city faster than we can construct a new subway station in Hungary…

The other reason is that Chinese people have similar values in life, they value hard work, peace and they don''''t care what the others believe in. They don''''t have such religious, social and criminal issues like American cities have. Man, you can''''t pay me enough to enter Detroit while I can walk midnight in any Chinese park alone without thinking of any danger. Since Chinese cities don''''t have these issues, their local governments can focus on other things that are important for people like cleanness, modern subways or high speed trains which have better services than most world-class airline companies.

I have been in Hangzhou, Guangzhou and Dallas. Dallas is one of the top 10 biggest city of US but it is merely passed the population of Hangzhou which is tier 2 city of China. Guangzhou is the tier 1 city but it is getting behind other tier 1 cities of China which means you would see Shanghai or Peiking much more advanced than Guangzhou.
Comparing to Dallas, Hangzhou is very clean and neat. It is not simple clean. It is mind blowing clean. And for the population of 9 million people, you see much less car on the street than Dallas. The air is the same, but Hangzhou has many more trees than Dallas.
The point is the sheer different between a tier 2 city of China and top 10 biggest cities of US, you will not able to comprehend the difference between the top cities of China with US.
urban planning of China has already surpassed US a decade….
