Of course this is a generalization, but women will feel safer, and be safer, than women in most of Europe or the Americas. Generally you can walk around by yourself up to about 1:00 a.m. at night (although of course around shady places like train stations you should be more cautious) and you don’t face the random street harassment you do in other places. Partly you’ll be safer because there are so many people that somebody’s aways around, so it would be risky to try to harm you, and partly because of cultural differences like less heavy drinking. There’s also less random aggressive behavior toward women. One thing that’s hard for me to adjust to when I go back in the US is the way you can just be walking along, and guys will start shouting at you from cars going by. In other places in the US there’s catcalling to deal with. Why are these random men acting in such an aggressive and bullying way? Too much time on their hands? A power trip? Who knows? But it’s great not to have to deal with that kind of crap in China.

Becouse chinese tradition cultural tell the people to be a gentleman and respect for others. Since ancient times, chinese people have attached great importance to moral education. China also known as a state of ceremonies since then.

Well, although I have visited other cities in China, I can only really speak for Shanghai, where I have been living for the past 4 years. Yes, it feels like the safest urban place I’ve ever been. Part of the reason, I believe, is due to the Shanghai city people, in general, who genuinely seem more friendly, polite and respectful towards each other, and certainly towards me, than any where else I’ve ever been in Europe and America. The main reason though, I am sure, is the vast “dad’s army” of unarmed, semi-professional old guys, who are uniformed and stationed on watch around the clock, at almost all the entrances to gated residential compounds, car parks, shopping malls, large office buildings, schools, etc. When I first came to China, I found their omni-presence, was quite intrusive, which re-enforced the pre-misconception I arrived with of China’s so called oppressive police-state. But now, I’ve completely changed my opinion and find it very reassuring to know that there is always a pair of vigilant eyes around, especially at night; someone on guard nearby whose job it is to keep watch for anyone up to no good, or anything suspicious going on, etc., a vital role which must also help to take the strain off the local police enforcement, leaving them to deal with more serious crime problems. This kind of work must also give retired people, men especially, an opportunity to do an important job, which must not only give them a sense of purpose and worth, but also helps people with all sorts of problems, enquiries, etc. and at the same time safeguarding the whole community.

America is immune to political purges.
Even including deaths in foreign wars, to have the equivalent danger from all non-medical causes in the US you need to go all the way back to the Civil War.
Right now China still suffers enough deaths from work related causes and traffic to make it less safe than the US. But you have to be very careful exactly which slice of time to pick. The larger the slice of time the more safe the US.
America is immune to internal wars, at least since the Civil War. Even including the Civil War, the US has lost much less of its population to internal wars than Europe. The reason is simple. There’s one country in the US and while we’ve had plenty of tiny rebellions we’ve only had one large Civil War. Since 1860 I can count several wars that killed far more than all American war deaths put together including the Revolutionary War and all wars since.
Right now there is little war in Europe. But you have to be very careful exactly which slice of time to pick. The larger the slice of time the more safe the US.
Even including the fact that our fore-bearers committed one of the largest genocides in history before 7/8ths of my ancestors came here.

Oh yes - I lived in Europe prior to coming to China and feel a hundred times safer here than I felt - in London as well as other European cities (They used to feel safe a few years earlier, but sadly, they no longer do)
South America - I used to live in Brazil and Argentina for a while and they also felt safe (not their big cities - I lived in smaller towns).
But none of them came close to China and Japan as far as safety is concerned.
In China, I know that come what may, I will not end up being chucked out of the country, there will not be any communal rioting, and as long as I go about my daily work honestly, no one will harm me or my family. I can travel anywhere in this country (actually I do - I travel at least once each month to different parts of China) and I always feel the same safety level.

As a Chinese, I have some friends from Canada and Europe, they described China as a kindergarten compared to certain areas in EU and US when it comes to safety. From my own experience, I lived in eastern part of China(which is relatively richer compared to the west) for more than 20 years and never encountered any form of life threatening crime or situation.
But what you do have to worry about is theft. Especially in crowded places like train stations or when you’re trying to squeeze into a bus, you definitely want to take care of your wallets and cellphones, and if you own a bike or motorcycle, it’s better that you buy a good lock for it.

I am Chinese and be borned in the end of 80s. I do feel thieves has decreased these years(the last one I met was 7 years ago,he steal an old nokia phone from me),but do not agree its because strong punishment from government.Actually when the punishment for criminal is much more stronger than today in the beginning of 90s,there is more thieves. I think the decrease of thieves is simply because the growth of economic. Everyone could easily get a job and its much more economic reasonable to do a legal job than to steal, its less risky and money is predictable, most people who''''s willing to work hard could get a satisfied payment, and questions from girlfriend''''s mother about what''''s your job could be much more easily answered .

Yes and no.
It depends on who you’re talking about. The US is probably one of the most stable countries, but currently it’s dealing with internal issues. Parts of Western Europe are the same, especially because they’re dealing with a lot (demands by the powers (US, China, Russia) and large amounts of immigrants). If you’re talking about Norway or Canada then it’s not safer, as Sweden has one of the highest safety rankings in the world and is a perfect destination for ALL tourists, visitors, travelers, etc. If you’re talking about Moldova, then perhaps some areas of China are safer like wealthy cities with capable law enforcement and remote rural areas where villages protect themselves. Europe is too often generalized, and it is highly diverse politically, economically, and culturally.

In terms of violent crime, China is much safer than any nation in the Americas except Canada, and it is safer than many European countries.
In terms of overall safety though, probably not. China has very high accident rates in almost everything from car crashes to workplace accidents.
While the homicide rate in China is about 1/6th of the US, workplace accidents kill 16 times as many people in China as the US.
Worker fatalities: How does China compare to U.S.?
Pollution deaths are also higher in China than almost anywhere else on earth.
In most countries, more people die in accidents than are murdered. Overall, China is probably less safe than the US, Canada, and most of Europe, at least as a place to work and live in.
However, China is relatively safe in terms of crime.

Yes, China is way safer than virtually any Western country. During my 10 years in China I’ve never heard about anyone getting a hair curled on his/her head. Meanwhile in Sweden, I have acquaintances that have got raped, robbed, beaten up and even murdered. And Sweden is supposed to be a relatively safe place. Most of this of course due to reckless mass import of people from less civilized countries.

I don’t know what the “statistics” are (though statistics are on the ever-worsening spectrum of “lies, damned lies, and statistics”), but I can tell you from my subjective experience is that it is safer here.
As a funny-looking foreign guy in a “small” (by Chinese standards) city, I am quite noticeable, which, theoretically, would make me an easy target. (I certainly would be a target on the east side of Buffalo, the south side of Chicago, or in the Los Angeles suburb of Compton). But here in China that simply doesn’t happen. I can walk the streets at night without fear. I get looks from people because I’m an oddity, a novelty, not because they want to harm me.
That isn’t to say crime doesn’t happen here, but it’s a fairly rare occurrence.

In China, you don’t need to worry about a policeman shooting you death just because he thinks you may have a gun.
Chinese police don’t even carry a gun, yet a random Chinese won’t rob you. Strange, isn’t it?
Walking in China is generally safe as long as you don’t try crossing a road, no matter what is the time. In case you need to cross a road, just ask a local to hold your hand and cross the road. In most cases, you will survive.

I am Chinese I can tell you some law in China . In China violence crime is seriously , if you steal wallet from someone and he didn’t realize you will be in jail for days maybe months. But if you pick a knife rob someone even only 10 rmb about 1.5 usdollar. you going to jail for years because it is violence crime even it is only 1 dollar .It is a matter of knife not money. Have a gun in China is illegal if you use a gun it is a huge crime you will be in jail for years many many years maybe the rest of your life. If a gun crime happens the director of police station will be In Big pressure because if The police cannot take the suspect then the government will take the director replaced .

Well acording to the Global Peace Index, no.
The index rates global peace using three broad themes: the level of safety and security in society, the extent of domestic and international conflict and the degree of militarization.
The top tree safest or, most peacefull, countries are Iceland, New Zealand and Portugal followed by Austria, Denmark, and Czech Republic and Slovenia all four of them European countries. Then we have Canada, from north America, at number 8 and at number 9 Switzerland, there are more European countries around those numbers, like Germany at number 16
The first south american coutry is Chile at number 24, and from central america is Costa Rica at number 34.
China it self is at number 116, only two rankings under USA that sits at number 114 from a total of 163 countries.
So no, China is not safer that Europe or America, but it is above some south American countries and very close to the USA.

I will say yes. Because China doesn''''t have a traditional religion, terrorists don''''t have any reason to launch an attack. There are few foreigners in China, most of the people in China are Chinese.
Also, China is not strong enough to protect the peaceful environment for the whole world ( I mean same as America). So less terrorists will focus on China. They don''''t have any target in China.
By the way, China has really strong troops and security checking system to fight against them.
These are good for China to create a safety environment, so I think China is safer.

Unlike much of the world, China''''s economy has been thriving in recent years and the country boasts the fourth-highest gross domestic product (GDP) in the world. Jobless and homeless rates are relatively low, which translates to a low crime rate as well. You hear about the occasional pickpocketing, but violence, particularly targeted against foreigners, is very rare.
Well, this question is a very individual one and it depends much upon your personality, the way you can handle hardshiphs or new and unexpected things and your perspective about life itself.
From my experience, I feel very safe

The world harping on about China having a forth highest GDP must be something happened more than 10 years ago.

Definitely. China is the safest country in the world. With the tight control of guns in China, it has become the country with most safety in the world. Either the 1st tier cities or the small townships, it is always safe. You can walk back to your hotel after you get finish with your nightlife, no one will bother you. In addition, Chinese public security office is alway reachable with number of 110. So don’t worry.

I have never gone to Europe, but I have gone to Northeastern US and Eastern China. Apart from a few warzone cities in US (e.g. Baltimore and Detroit), I feel Northeastern US and Eastern China are largely the same. Well, actually I felt unsafe when I took bus in China. Oh, by the way, those pushy pimps in China are really annoying.
The thing is, in US, when people see one of the following:
Africans
Latinos
Prostitutes
Drunkard
Homeless
They will automatically label that place as unsafe. Anyway, in US, I walked around at 1 am, 2 am, or 3 am and I simply minded my own business, nothing happened to me.
