世界第五的STEM(科学、技术、工程和数学)专业学生

The United States of America
This may be an interesting choice but here me out.
The US is quite successful in many aspects. Our many successes include-
The world’s largest and one of the most innovative and advanced economies on the planet.
Being the world’s foremost military power with the former U.S.S.R. post-WW2 and arguably the sole superpower since 1990
A highly entrepreneurial and “can-do” attitude. This has led to the US being a nation of creators and improvers. Some great improvements, feats, or inventions that have arisen from this “can-do” attitude/entrepreneurial spirit include- The Model T, the first cell phone, landing men on the moon, and more.
A world leader in the fields of science, healthcare, and education.
Arguably the most culturally influential nation on the planet other than the United Kingdom.
Having a high-skilled labor force.
Not the best by any means, but a decent standard of living.
A stable and functioning government.
Not too shabby, but I still find that the US hasn’t lived up to what it could be.
We still call ourselves the “land of the free” yet we still have the largest prison rate in the world at 724 inmates per 100,000 people.
We have some of the brightest people on this planet yet we also have an anti-intellectual streak that runs deep into certain pockets of our society.
We’re a nation of immigrants and diversity yet our country still has problems with racism and xenophobia. I find that we in the US take our diversity of peoples for granted.
Having some of the best hospitals and healthcare innovations on the planet, yet the worst healthcare system in the developed world.
Having some of the best learning institutions on the planet, yet at the same time being out of reach for most people simply because of cost.
Some places in the US are among the wealthiest places on the planet. Just go drive through Southwestern Connecticut, Westchester County, New York, Palo Alto, California, or through the boom towns of the Bracken Oil Fields of North Dakota, but… the US is also home to some of the poorest places in the developed world. If you ever visit a Native American reservation, rural communities throughout the American South, declining Midwestern industrial towns like Gary or Detroit, or old logging towns in Northern Maine then you will find that our insane levels of wealth in this country haven’t spread to everyone.
Some parts of the US might as well be a Christian theocracy to people from other developed nations, yet we also have parts of the US where secularism and a lack of religion is the norm. This is the perfect brew for polarization.
Although our violent crime rate has been in steady decline, we still have issues with firearms that is unseen in any other country.
What this list shows is that the US is a heavily contrasting nation. We have two faces and in order to achieve our fullest potential we have to get on the same page. I think most of us Americans can agree that our healthcare system is flawed and inefficient, our education system is unequal in quality and way too expensive, and that we have some serious internal problems to work out.
I say that we Americans roll up our sleeves and use some of that “can-do” attitude that we seem to be lacking nowadays and make this country reach for the sky like we once strived to do.

Kewan Shirazi, Proud Iranian
What about the country that has:
The world’s largest reserves of zinc
The world’s 2nd largest reserves of copper
The world’s 9th largest reserves of iron ores
The world’s 2nd largest reserves of natural gas
The worlds 4th largest reserves of oil
The world’s 2nd largest petroleum company
The world’s fastest scientific growth, more than 11x the world’s average
The world’s 5th highest university students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)
Have you guessed it yet?
That country is no other than Iran.
Iran is, in my opinion, the country with the highest unused potential, and I will explain why:
Yes, Iran has some of the world’s largest reserves of minerals, but its mining infrastructure is lacking, and Iran has very little resources to fund or invest in its mining industry, and because of the sanctions foreign investment is not an option.
Yes, Iran has the world’s largest combined oil and natural gas reserves, but it’s also lacking investments in its oil and gas sector, that needs to be developed further to unleash its full potential. 40 years ago, Iran used to produce almost 10 million barrels of oil daily, but now the number has been lowered to a mere 4 million, because of an aging oil infrastructure, that needs to be modernized and bad politics.
Yes, Iranian student''''''''s doing extremely well, but Iran also has the world’s largest brain drain, which means that all the smart, innovative and bright people are packing their bags to leave Iran as soon as possible.
Yes, Iran is the 4th richest country in the world based on the worth of natural resources, which is worth more than $35.000.000.000.000 (35 trillion USD).
But this is a curse in disguise.
It has made Iran lazy, hence its economy is now dependent on natural resources, instead of human capital, as Iran’s economy is oil based.
Each time new sanctions strike against Iran’s oil industry, I hope that it will force the Iranian government to realize, that we shouldn’t make our economy so dependent on our oil, but rather on our human capital.
Instead of investing immensely in the oil and gas sector, we need to focus on our educational facilities, make Iran’s education world class, which will produce the brightest minds in the world, and make it attractive for them to stay, and make Iran a country based on knowledge, rather than petroleum.
Then, we can focus on getting rich on our natural resources.

I agree with you 100% that Iran is the country with the most unused potential.
But I think there is one industry you are missing, which is tourism.
Iran is GORGEOUS, with so many fascinating layers of history.
And yet, even in 2016, Iran received only 6 million visitors, compared to 32 million who visited Turkey.
Were Iran’s government more benign and if it did not have restrictive dress codes that turn off many potential women travelers, why wouldn’t Iran’s tourism industry be just as large as Turkey’s?
So, if anything, the above post about Iran underestimates Iran’s unused potential.

I travelled over land from Tabriz to Teheran to Esfahan, Kerman and across the desert to Zahedan and Quetta in Pakistan. It is a country with tourism potential but not major tourism attractions. Of course Esfahan, Ghum etc is beautiful and nature is always beautiful. However the country‘s major assets are its intelligent and cultured population.

A few years ago there was an event where the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) the global apex body in the domain acknowledged the contribution of Iranians in the field of Electrical and Electronics engineering. It is uncanny but every third researcher in the field of circuits and systems in both US and Europe is an Iranian. And most of them are from Sharif University of Technology. It makes me really curious as to the reason for the fascination of Iranians with Electronics engineering. Iranians seem to be intelligent in general and inclined towards STEM and are great people overall. They seem to be doing extremely well for themselves out there.

Guess what, Arab countries have smart people too. And so does Pakistan and Afghanistan etc.
US sanctions have deprived American companies from access to Iran and its riches, I don''''''''t think this is fair.
In the meantime the Chinese get all the oil from Iran and Irak. The West has been taking many Iranians in, many were educated in Western Universities and many succeeded in the West. I don''''''''t see them running back to Iran, why? Brain drain yes, but why does Iran not reverse the tables, make life nice in Iran, encourage immigration by educated professionals, encourage entrepreneurship, make it comfortable for a educated middle class, have stable laws and an independent non-corrupt judiciary. You can have people practice Islam if they want to, why not?

Imagine two countries—that used to be one country.
The one country had thousands of years of shared cultural and linguistic history. And centuries of mostly shared history of rising and falling kingdoms, dynasties, and governments.
And then, what had been one people was split into two countries. With two very different governments.
The people of the first country were allowed to develop their own potential as they saw fit. They were free to pursue their own ambitions, according to their talent and work ethic. They were free to choose their own government, and to elect their own leaders.
The people of the second country were able to develop their potential, and pursue their ambitions, only to a much more limited extent. They lived and worked under a state planned economy, dominated by rigid communist ideals.
The first country is commonly referred to as South Korea. South Korea is not the country with the most unused potential.
Instead, South Korea serves as a comparison. A control group, if you will.
South Korea is a living picture of what might have been.
It proves, devastatingly, that the second country, whose people are largely the same, but whose government is drastically different, has the most unused potential of any country in the world.
That country, of course, is North Korea.

Take a deep look at these country!
A country blessed with large deposits of 44 different minerals spread across the country.
639 million metric tonnes proven reserves of coal but production is only at 0.04 million metric tonnes. No wonder there are only few power stations and regular power cut in the country.
Has three billion metric tonnes proven reserves of iron ore but production is only 0.07 million metric tonnes.
Has five million metric tonnes proven reserves of lead/zinc but production is at 0.6 million metric tonnes.
Has one million metric ounces proven reserves of gold but production is 0.14 million ounces.
Has 568 million metric tonnes proven reserves of limestone, but produces only at 11 million metric tonnes.
World''''''''s sixth-largest exporter of oil.
A population of over 180 million people of which 60% of that number is below 40 years of age.
Africa’s most populous country and seventh in the whole world.
Has an Agricultural land of 708000 sq. Km in 2014, according to the World Bank collection of development indicators, compiled from officially recognized sources.
There army is the best ground force in the whole of Africa and one of the best in the world.
You should not task your brain thinking too much about what country this might be, its the almighty giant of Africa ‘’Nigeria’’.
Despite all of these resources
We depend alot on foreign aid: We depend on foreign aid to handle some basic human needs, an even immunizing children against polio and other mundane challenges that could be solved by any cool headed government. Nigeria receives one of the highest economic assistance in the world. About ($US413,300,000) has been received by the Nigerian government in form of aid in the past years. Begging is almost legal in this country, even our government does it and the most irritating thing is that our begging bowl leaks!
Epileptic power supply: Nigeria’s current power generation has reached 7000 Mega Watts, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, has said. At some time 2017 Nigeria was ranked as the second worst nation in power supply after Yemen as power drops to 3,851 megawatts, MW. South Africa generates over 34000 megawatts and the U.S as at 2014 generates over 317-000-000 megawatts, these is to show you how far behind we are.
Crime and terrorism: These two issues also negatively influence the economic situation of the country. Actually, the Nigerian crime issue gives many people in this country sleepless nights. In some places, people feel that they cannot walk around their own neighborhoods freely anymore. Public security is an important aspect of every state, and Nigeria has failed in this respect. As for terrorist attacks, they are now on the rise in Nigeria, which is the result of Boko Haram activities over the past years. Different violent activities such as bombings, kidnappings, and others don’t give the Nigerians a feeling of safety. Consequently, the Global Peace Index of 2016, has classified Nigeria as the 4th country in the world with the highest level of deaths as a result of conflict.
Unemployment: To tell the truth, unemployment is one of the most damaging problems in Nigeria, and many people are disappointed due to a widespread of joblessness Actually, it seems like we are going round in circles, the unemployment is high due to economic recession, and we have tough economic situation due to the high rate of unemployment. We need to break out of this vicious cycle. Unemployment in Nigeria is like a viral disease, the treatment for which has not been discovered yet. These days, about 24 % of Nigerian people are unemployed. Actually, these numbers are worse for the youths. According to the official Nigerian statistics, 38% of those under 24 are unemployed, but the World Bank uates this number to be closer to 80%. In March 2014, sixteen people were killed in a scuffle when 500,000 despairing job-seekers were hurrying to apply for about 5,000 vacancies in the Immigration Service of Nigeria. Students, after graduating from higher educational institutions often face low morale due to joblessness. A lot of Nigerian graduates were not even able to acquire useful skills during their education process. They were busy reading textbooks without having an opportunity to practice what they read. That is why they apply for jobs for and they aren''''''''t hired due to the lack of special skills. As a result, graduates usually stay in their parents’ homes for a long period, with mounting pessimism and frustration. Actually, it is one of the main cause of crime among young Nigerian people, as they turn to unconscionable activities because there is nothing else except to generate income or occupy their time. Annually, about 200,000 students graduate from different universities, but most of them are not able to find a job.
Poor educational systems. These days, corruption has also spread to the Nigerian educational system, especially in universities. Professors are used to taking money from students in exchange for good marks. Some students even say that they have to bribe university executives to have their exam results submitted and compiled for the National Youth Service Corps. The higher institutions and universities in this country are not in shape. The facilities that are needed to adequately teach students so that they can be useful to companies after graduation are missing. Too much theory in our educational institutions and a total lack of practice is what the big issue is. A lot of companies have appealed to the Federal government to sure the necessary tools are accessible to enable the students that specialize in the are to be fully prepared.
These are but a few of the problems this country can easily take care of with the the resources presented to her by mother earth.
Books and all forms of writing material is a treat to those who choose to suppress the truth. Wole Soyinka.
There is no pride in telling the world the problems one face in his or her country, but one sure way great revolutionist solve dreadful challenges in their country is to complain, then complain a little more, then a little more until those who matter do that which is supposed to be done to solve the problem, and these is my sole aim.
No matter the amount of resources a nation may have if they fail to utilize them, then it is as good as having non.

Anthony Myrlados, I am a high school student.
A country with trillions of dollars in natural resources. A country with 150 million people. A country with some of the hardest-working people.
And it all makes less money that the state of New York.
Yes, I am referring to none other than the largest country on Earth, Russia.
Make no mistake, this country is already a superpower. But it has the potential to be something much, much more powerful. Why isn''''''''t it much more powerful? Because of the government, which has neglected Russia for hundreds of years.
While other European monarchs were busy advancing capitalist economies and industrializing, Russia was busy ending feudalism. After all, it''''''''s a lot harder to waste tax money and abuse your power when the uppity peasants are out and about.
While other European monarchs built dazzling universities and modernized, Russia was busy losing wars. Despite having the largest army in Europe, it lost war after war because the Tsars were blind to the problems of the army. Just look at the Russo-Japanese War, or the Crimean War.
After the Revolution, Russia was again behind on the economy. They spent the bulk of their GDP on an army that would keep their satellite states loyal, satellite states that today have turned against Russia.
And even now, Putin leads an ineffective government that fails to advance the country. Corruption is as common in Russia as breathing and eating. Police and lawyers work for the highest bidder. The Parliament is full of incompetent cronies who pay tribute to Putin. The government spends money on keeping the generals and elderly loyal, so Putin can be voted into office again and again, and not on developing Russia''''''''s poor infrastructure and industry.
It really does make me sad as a Russian, seeing such a great and beautiful country stagnating in the Modern Era when it could be so much more. I hope that soon things will change, and Russia will enter an era of growth and prosperity!

Jim Donaldson, Making Peoples Lives Better
Canada.
We have the worlds most fresh water. We have plenty of vacant land. We have pretty much all the resources we need to do anything right in our country. We have good trade relationships with most of the world. We have entire populations in the north that can be elevated by having more investments put in place both publicly and privately in education and healthcare. We can open up the northwest passage to facilitate trade. As climate change continues to wreak havoc on the world, Canada seems to be set up to handle it better than most countries.
Canada, even with it''''''''s small population, has the ability to be a global superpower; we have capable people with access to an abundance of resources. We are one of the few nations that, if governed properly, does not NEED outside help to get things built. We only really NEED to import certain luxury items. We can feed people with what we have here. We can give all our people energy with what we have here. We have people with the skills to build anything we could dream of. We can provide all our people with what they need AND still have enough to get rich selling the leftovers to our allies.
We have everything in place to be a global leader .
I also need to give honorable mentions to Russia, China, North Korea, India, Brazil, Greenland/Denmark, and Antarctica (not a country, but so much is unknown about it that there has got to be some potential there). I won''''''''t make my case for them, as some already have.

In my mind I’d have to lump virtually every African country into this category. But let me give you two examples:
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has more natural wealth than any other African country. The deposits of mineral wealth lies in the trillions - most of it is untapped. And it’s people are unbelievably poor.
Politicians in the Congo are interested in one thing only: Power. They will do anything to attain and keep that power. Factional fighting has resulted in wars. Massive wars. Genocides. Slavery. It’s horrific.
Due to ongoing factional wars, there are so many Congolese living outside of the Congo as a result. Many of them I have met here in Cape Town and it is unbelievable that such wonderful people have been “chased out” of their homeland. People who have taken 3500 mile journey on foot. Families have been separated.
The DRC also has a 1000km river, the Congo River, which has enough latent energy that if converted by a series of hydroelectric plants, could power the entire African continent and much of the Middle East.
So, a country with a rich culture, an abundance of mineral and natural resources, all governed by greedy men who have no desire at all to actually help the people they are meant to govern.
I do not think I will see a prosperous DRC in my lifetime.
The other example is the Central African Republic. You don’t hear much about CAR in the press. Most people don’t even know it’s a real country. People think “Central Africa” is a geographic location.
But here is the kicker: The land of the CAR is so fertile that proper commercial farming would wipe out food poverty in the entire African continent. That’s about 1.2 billion people. And that’s without any further damage to rainforests, etc.
The CAR is a very poor country. Most people live on subsistence farming, barely feeding themselves, when the land actually could feed the entire continent.
I could cite many more examples of African countries living well below their potential. As an African living in Africa, it is heart-breaking to see that tribalism and greed will keep everyone in poverty. There’s no magical Wakanda here.

My neighbour in west, Greenland has a lot of raw resources that are hardly touched.
It had rare earth minerals, gold, iron-ore, rubies and uranium.
In large quantities, it seems.
along with other countries, have shown great interest in mining pressing the local government very hard.
There are several companies “researching” potiential mines there, some have even for several years.
Some find it strange, and there are stories of men in suits with heavy black luggage flying out of Greenland with minimal or even none customs surveillance.
There is grave danger that locals will not benefit much from the mining.
