We celebrated it today with a nice lunch. We didn’t do the whole dragon boat thing (not sure why- but I’m assuming because it’s winter here and it’s quite cold). We ate a lot of zongzi amongst a lot of other food too

Mmm yes, might not be a good idea to do competitions in the water if the participants can freeze their asses

The dragon boats are so different from the ones in Taiwan. The ones in Taiwan have a bigger dragon head and they have a special ceremony just to paint the eyes. [Oh, it is was so hot here, too!]

Behind the Story
I haven’t been to a Dragon Boat Festival either, even though Seattle has one in July. Vancouver, BC, has the biggest Dragon Boat Festival in North America. I’ve read that it draws over 180 teams from around the world. I’m glad the festival has returned to China.

I went last year. Looks almost exactly the same! the crowd only cheered when the boats flipped over in the lake. Were there lots of cute kids and old lady dancing crews this year? Also, I love zongzi and dragon boat festival but I still think it is strange to have a holiday to celebrate someone jumping off a bridge – especially in a country that has a very serious suicide problem.

It is around the beginning of the lunar month last week, I think you would be lucky to even see any part of the moon, let alone verify how bright it is in the bay haha! :D.I actually feel rather unsettled to see Cinderella, Tom & Jerry, Doraemon and Spongebob murals in a village that is supposed to be historic. They seem out of place..

It sounds like a nice getaway. Plus, you didn’t need to contend with the crowds [usually China is crazy on holidays.]I must admit that there is quite the contrast between new and old. I am more drawn to the traditional houses as they look more serene and peaceful. And those two grandmas seen content with peeling chestnuts and passing the time away.

I was so blown away when I saw the huge Sponge Bob from the road that I had to stop there and take pictures, haha. It was literally street art, or colourful walls in general, are not common at all in China.

35 RMB?! That’s a steal. Did they forget a zero? I swear Beijing is the ONLY place in China that has reasonable admission prices. Seriously, it’s one of the primary reasons I started taking vacations in Southeast Asia. No, I’m not going to spend 150 rmb to enter your village and then another 50 rmb to enter your teeny, tiny museum plus another 150 rmb to take the (mandatory) ski lift up the stupid mountain to get to said museum. I rather stay home.Nice pictures, btw. It’s an interesting contrast between the sponge bob building and the traditional ones!

1.5hours is certainly quite a bit of a commute. Do the people on the train stand in the aisles? From your photo the train does not look too crowded at all and not packed like sardines. Or maybe that was a quiet commute day.I also see that the train seats are forward facing. In Australia, our trains here have seats facing each other, which I don’t think is wise as that sort of takes up more space/less space for seats in trains. And some people don’t deal well sitting facing the opposite direction on public transport!

The train is not crowded, there are usually people standing but normally only in the space between carriages. What is packed like sardines is the subway, haha, that is the perfect descxtion. And yes, all the seats in the train are forward facing! In fact, they have a very cool system and all the seats can be rotated 180º. So when the train arrives to the final station and everybody gets off, the cleaning ladies rotate all the seats so they are facing forward again when the train leaves again in the opposite direction.

Ah, the commute culture. I remember for the brief time I was in Bangkok (1 month) having to fight my way into the skytrain. I was astonished by how many people would sardine themselves in when the train was obviously already full + another one would be coming! But working from home sounds really nice. I don’t think I could work from home as I’m already a home-body…I need the excuse to get out!
Ah, the commute culture. I remember for the brief time I was in Bangkok (1 month) having to fight my way into the skytrain. You know, once in Beijing I was waiting for a bus with a group of Korean friends. The bus arrived, and it was packed. Like, there was space for maybe one person but we were 8. So we thought we would need to wait for the next bus. But the ticket collector saw us and she opened the rear door, got off the bus, pushed all the people standing next to the rear door, made us get into the bus one by one, pushed some more, and closed the door tightly behind us. Yep, Chinese people are not afraid of being sardines, haha.Going to an office and mingling with the people is nice, but I think I will be fine working from home. In fact, I think I will exercise and move around much more, haha. I can walk the dog, go to the supermarket… things that now, with this hell of a commute, cannot do!

I wish US infrastructure was as new & efficient as China’s. Those trains look nice. Anyway, 1.5 hours each way is not that bad. I have friends with 2 hours commute: car + bus + subway.

Dang Marta that sounds like my previous commute! I’m glad you’re so positive about it though. Is this permanent? Or only temporary?May I ask how much is a ticket from Suzhou to Shanghai? I imagine it’s not too expensive.

It’s only temporary! I will start working from home in January. Yaaay! I don’t think I could commute indefinitely. The ticket from Suzhou to Shanghai, one way, is 34.5. Considering 22 working days a month, that would be 1,518 RMB, plus 6 per day for the subway: 1,650 RMB a month. Not super cheap, but definitely cheaper than renting in Shanghai!

I cannot imagine commuting 1.5 and 2 hours to work. Luckily, I live and work in the same small town. It takes me 10-15 minutes to get to work and that includes parking and walking in to the building :) I used to work in the next larger town and it would take me 30 minutes to commute and up to an hour in bad weather. I hated it! Like you say, it felt like I was wasting too much of my day in the car. I’m glad you will soon be working from home.

Hey! That new train looks like the shink in Japan! Ah yes. Hitoshi and I considered ourselves lucky to have “short” 45 min commutes each way in Tokyo. In Calgary, it’s not abnormal to commute an hour each way, especially if you take a bus or live in the deep communities. To work at home? Bliss!!

All these sights for free! Well done! Some tourists spots are not what I call value for money eg the Shard Tower in London (I’ve never been). It pays to be sextive when visiting a tourist spot. I paid EUR 6 for a two hours walking tour in Athens on Boxing Day. A friend and I went on a free four hours walking tour of Berlin.

Free, free, free, free and free! Nice! That’s really stupid, a garden charging more than arguably the most famous tourist attraction of the entire China. An imperial palace with near infinity number of mini palaces and courtyards on top of that. I wonder if they did their due diligence and compared their prices.

I guess they didn’t compare, maybe they are set by each provincial government? Anyway, even though that garden is really huge and there are many things to see, it’s just too much. And in high season it is 90 RMB… crazy!BTW in Barcelona you’ll see that some places are also ridiculously expensive, I think I mentioned it when I wrote about our trip.

It’s cool to see different places besides the famous attractions. Shantang Street looks quite decent. I agree – 70RMB is really expensive for a Chinese garden, even if it is a UNESCO site. I mean, there are several famous gardens that make up the UNESCO site so if every one had similar ticket prices, that would be quite pricey to visit them all, haha.

All free. Amazing! I like free attractions too, but sadly sometimes others around me scoff at that…oh well, who cares :D I’m guessing it’s 70RMB per person for that garden. Maybe they put on some special performance for you or there really is some relic treasure for you to see…but still, it would take a lot of convincing for me to go to that.I had to google what a papercut is…it does look fancy and intricate :D “the Chinese who also looks foreigner.” Really?

Vegetarian food in China is actually REALLY amazing! I would go there in a heartbeat if they had one in the states!

I am a vegan and would totally have loved being on your tour of Suzhou! The few times I’ve been there I’ve never had a chance to go to a vegetarian restaurant. Man, it would be fun to explore Suzhou with you!

Hi Marta..I am here for few days and was hoping if you can take me on a tour for Shantang Street, sometime over this weekend.By the way, I am also Vegetarian and I have tried the food in Lotus Veg Cafe, courtesy your suggestion :)

Hi Ankit! Glad you went to Lotus haha! Now I have a new favourite vegetarian restaurant but it is fancier and more expensive.I’m sorry about the tour though, bad timing! I am 38 weeks pregnant so not in my best moment xD

I live in Los Angeles, and do you know how often I went to the beach this summer? Once. Have I been to Universal Studios in the last decade? No.I should make time to be a tourist in my own town, like you.

I understand, Autumn. When you have the things so close, you end up leaving them for “later”. I lived in Valencia for almost a year and went to the beach once. It was on the other side of the city, a long subway ride away, but still… I could have gone more.

It’s a shame when these huge city walls turn out to be fake. It’s the same in Datong, Shanxi, except they tried to rebuild the entire wall and wasted a ton of money. Rebuilding one gate or section is much more practical. At least Nanjing and Xian still have intact walls.

I’ve been to Datong but I don’t remember seeing the city walls! I remember that the city itself was not too interesting so I left after visiting the caves and the hanging monastery.

Nice, the caves and hanging monastery are pretty cool. The city walls were put up within the last 3 years or so.

Good to hear the rain cleans the air over there. But that must be a lot of humidity if the walls and leather chairs got mold back in the old apartment :D It is currently winter here in Australia, and over night the windows in my apartment get wet, dripping with water when morning comes around. If I don’t wipe it, it seeps into the walls and mold and fungus come out :D

Ugh, so you have the same problem! Luckily it seems I don’t have it now in this apartment, maybe because it’s the 11th floor so it gets more sun and air? Who knows!

Great pictures! I loved the family portrait. That building behind you is interesting. What is it? We’re having beautiful weather–seventy degrees F or so and sunny. Yesterday I went for a lovely walk along the waterfront. When I got back to my car, I realized I’d left my keys inside. I was behind in paying for AAA, so I thought, oh, well, I’ll just walk home and look for another set of keys. I was already a little bit tired, and the two miles to my house was all uphill, but I made it. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the car key, so I had to call AAA anyway. They told me I could pay tomorrow. So yes, I did have a nice time in the sunshine despite foolishly leaving my keys in the car.

It’s the Pants Building! Suzhou’s most infamous building, haha.Ooops about the car keys! Our car has a very cool feature, if you close the door with the keys inside an alarm starts beeping! (How can you lock the door with the keys inside btw? I thought that was not possible!).

I put the keys in the pocket of the blouse. Then, while I was putting my purse in the trunk, I decided I didn’t need the blouse, so I threw it in the trunk too.

Nico is gorgeous and I love the sculptures around the lake; what a shame I did not see them during my lovely visit to Suzhou. I did despise the pollution in Beijing when I was there recently – it was dreadful.

I’m so sorry to hear that! Last time I went to Beijing, 1.5 years ago, there was even a sandstorm!
