Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 865 flagship is here — without integrated 5G

Qualcomm has officially announced its next-generation flagship processor for phones — the Snapdragon 865 — but it’ll still need a separate 5G modem to enable 5G instead of an integrated 5G modem built right into the chipset. Traditionally, that means more expensive, power-hungry phones than an integrated solution.
Announced alongside the 865 is Qualcomm’s other new processor, the Snapdragon 765, which will feature integrated 5G. However, it’ll be part of a less powerful processor than the 865, which will likely power the next wave of Android flagships in 2020.
Qualcomm has been teasing that it would offer Snapdragon chips with integrated 5G modems since February. It even confirmed at IFA 2019 that it would be offering a 700-series processor with integrated 5G. But it’s still odd that Qualcomm would choose the less powerful chip to serve as its initial integrated 5G product, leaving the next-generation mobile standard as a separate (albeit mandatory) component for its top-of-the-line flagship 865 model.

the current-generation 855, by requiring a separate 5G modem (in this case, the second-generation X55 model).
In fact, if manufacturers want to use the new Snapdragon 865, they’ll have to support 5G — Qualcomm tells The Verge that the 865 and X55 are a package deal, there’s no modem on board the 865 at all, and you can’t just make a 4G phone with the 865 by using a different 4G modem.

Correction, 6:58PM ET: Qualcomm has confirmed to The Verge that the Snapdragon 865 will be exclusive for 5G phones and will require the companion X55 modem. This article originally stated that manufacturers would be able to offer 4G-only devices using the Snapdragon 865. We regret the error.

5G barely has any coverage yet so it really isn’t a big deal. If I have to wait another 3 years for 5G, did I really miss out on anything?

Most markets that buy phones with the 800-class chips in them (US, Korea, Europe) don’t have huge 5G footprints right now. China, the main country in which 700-class chips are sold, has a ton of 5G deployed already and they are only deploying more 5G next year, so it makes sense that all China-destined phones will have integrated 5G while some consumers in the US won’t want to pay for it.

Manufacturers will be able to add a separate 5G modem (in this case, the second-generation X55 model). But 5G won’t be included by default
They’re probably trying to milk extra money from manufacturers until they have no choice but to integrate them into one piece of silicon.

Qualcomm seems to be telling us that it’s only supporting 5G devices with the Snapdragon 865, despite the fact that the processor will still require a separate modem to access 5G networks.
Yea what about areas of the world still deploying LTE, or devices which do not require mobile connectivity? Will Qualcomm force oems to buy modems, or simply withhold the chip altogether? I’m surprised they would have this sort of policy with the antitrust stuff in the past few years.

There’s so much wrong here I’m not sure where to even begin.
iPhones only competition is other iPhones
No, it isn’t. The iPhone competes with devices like the Galaxy S and Note series, among others.
People choose OS first.
Says who? Some might. Others choose by what they like, regardless of the OS.
An average consumer couldn’t tell the difference between an iPhone 11 and a Pixel 4 in term of performance.
If that’s true, then explain the constant complaints with the pixel 3’s performance, including things like Bluetooth.
The A series has really only been winning benchmarks the last couple of years.
The A series has been beating other chips since it first came out.
If everything opens apps within milliseconds of eachother, what’s the difference?
It isn’t just about apps. It’s about system stability and long term performance. It’s about battery life. Consumers notice all of that.

For all the words you typed you didn’t really have anything of substance to debate.
1.) Yes it does, consumers don’t flip flop between Galaxys and iPhones every year. Some do, most don’t.
2.) People DO choose their OS first. They buy what they know. Or they dip their toes and either stay or run back.
3.) Wow, Bluetooth issues on the Pixel 3! How about when the iPhone 6 bent in half like a hot candy bar? Every phone has bugs every year. If that’s not true, why can I Google iPhone forums loaded with hardware and software issues? Remember all those times a new iOS upxe caused majors issues on tens of millions of iPhones at once? The internet does.
4.) Yes, the A series is a strong chip. So is the Snapdragon series. If you don’t acknowledge that then you’re being disingenuous at best or just an internet troll at worst.
5.) Non-iPhones have been beating iPhones in real world simulated speed tests as well as battery life tests for years. Consumers prioritize their needs when buying things.
You’re right. My Pixel 2 XL is more than 2 years old and still runs excellent.

It isn’t just about apps. It’s about system stability and long term performance. It’s about battery life. Consumers notice all of that.
Yeah, and iPhones are not the end all be all on that note. iOS 13 and Batterygate are two prime examples.

Well, in terms of performance, according to Anandtech tests, the best Android phone (Note 10) could barely match 3 years younger iPhone 7. In order to do that, they needed an expensive CPU, a lot more RAM and a much bigger battery.
With this latest news, any Android manufacturer that will try to compete against the iPhone 12 will face all the challenges that Apple will face, but without Apple’s custom chips. It will be very hard for any of them to build a flagship phone that is as energy efficient as an iPhone, and that costs a lot cheaper than what Apple will spend to build its own flagships. And of course, with twice as much RAM, they will offer shorter battery life and less than half the performance. That’s something the users always notice.

this isn’t strange, it’s almost definitely an engineering problem. a more powerful cpu/gpu could definitely require more space/power or some other compromise that makes it easier to integrate a 5g modem into the 700 series. idk why people literally always assume companies are just choosing not to do things while simultaneously remarking on how strange it is that they don’t "just" do the thing that they’re "choosing" not to do.
oh well, internet.

That’s comforting my choice to wait 1 more year before renewal.
I am still happy with my Galaxy S9 even if I would like more options on the camera (having a wide angle and something like a 3-5x telephoto would be nice) as I use my smartphone as a "Camera Sketchbook"kind of.
That explains the rumors about the S11 having bigger batteries but that will be offset by this Qualcomm power hungry solution…
In the meanwhile, the iPhone chips are more and more efficient while increasing batteries.
