New Zealanders hand in 50,000 guns after assault weapon ban

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — New Zealand authorities said Saturday their country will be a safer place after owners handed in more than 50,000 guns during a buyback program following a ban on assault weapons. But critics say the process was flawed and many owners have illegally stashed their firearms.

The government banned the most lethal types of semi-automatic weapons less than a month after a lone gunman in March killed 51 worshippers at two Christchurch mosques. The police then launched a six-month program to buy the newly banned weapons from owners.

The buyback ended midnight Friday, with gun collection events staying open late as police reported in a surge in last-minute returns.

Provisional figures indicate 33,000 people handed in 51,000 guns, and another 5,000 guns as part of a parallel amnesty in which owners could hand over any type of firearm without any questions being asked but without getting compensated.

Owners also modified another 2,700 guns to make them legally compliant, while police said they had seized a further 1,800 guns from gangs since March. And police said they''''''''re in the process of collecting another 1,600 guns from gun dealers.

Police Minister Stuart Nash told reporters Saturday that criminals would find it harder to get their hands on assault weapons because they tended to steal them from lawful owners, but those weapons would now be out of circulation.

Police Deputy Commissioner Mike Clement thanked gun owners for doing the right thing. He acknowledged in a statement it had been “a difficult process for some people.”

Both Nash and Clement said the country was now safer than it had been before the March attacks.

But Nicole McKee, a spokeswoman for the advocacy group Council of Licensed Firearms Owners, said owners had kept about two-thirds of the banned weapons because they had lost faith in the government and hadn''''''''t been offered adequate compensation.

“They never overcame being blamed by authorities for being somehow responsible for a heinous act of terrorism — something they would never do," McKee said in a statement.

The ban on assault weapons was strongly backed by lawmakers in an historic 119-1 vote after the mosque attacks. Lawmakers are now considering further restrictions, including creating a register to track all guns.

Police figures indicate the government paid out just over 100 million New Zealand dollars ($66 million) to compensate owners during the buyback.

So, ok, let me get this straight. Since the year 1772 (that’s right, not a typo, 250 years) there’s been a grand total of 1 mass shooting with “assault weapons” in New Zealand, all the while there have been tens of thousands of people in possession of such weapons in that country, as the article reveals. Now we are to believe that taking away these weapons is going to make the country safer? Just a mere glance at the statistics in New Zealand should suggest to the casual observer that “assault weapons” were never a public safety concern there and still aren’t.

First, everyone needs to realize current gun laws in the USA are not enforced.
Penalty for a felon in possession of a firearm is 2-10 years jail time. Majority receive minimum or the charge are dropped all together. Enforce these laws to the maximum
Make sure the FBI, with other police agencies do a better job with background checks. And in the case of the FBI, when you have information on situations like Parkland, the recent Navy shooting and a couple others, follow through, don’t ignore it.
Watch the Democratic debates! Then decide if this country would be safer banning democrats than guns

When all the guns have been banned,
When all the words have been censored,
When all the history has been erased,
When all the freedom has been taken,
Only then will you realize why our right to bear arms was so high on the list.

This is government propaganda. I have seen other accounts that said very few guns had been turned in. This article is an attempt by the NZ government and by the AP to convince the public that gun confiscation is the right thing to do and that everyone should cooperate. Our 2nd amendment does not exist in NZ but it does here.

It will not be safer from criminals because guaranteed criminals did not turn in their weapons, only the law abiding people.

Not having assault weapons will make the Chinese takeover less bloody. New Zealand should have studied the way they handle gun possession in Switzerland, everyone is required to be proficient and serve a short period of military training. The Swiss don''''''''t tolerate misuse of guns, including transport outside of the home in non-approved fashion.
But the country by design has a ready force of citizens to repeal any invading force. Much less expensive than having to have a large standing army.

Law-abiding citizens turning in banned weapons prevents no crime. See, these people obey the law..they would not commit a crime with these weapons in the first place.

Admiral Yamamoto who crafted the attack on Pearl Harbor had attended Harvard University 1919-1921 & was Naval Attaché to the U. S. 1925-28. Most of our Navy was destroyed at Pearl Harbor and our Army had been deprived of funding and was ill prepared to defend the country.
When Yamamoto was asked why Japan did not follow up the Pearl Harbor attack with an invasion of the U. S. Mainland, his reply was that he had lived in the U. S. and knew that almost all houeholds had guns. He went on to say he was more afraid of armed American civilians than the US Army.
