Because a vision softly creeping

Left its seeds while I was sleeping

And the vision that was planted in my brain

Still remains

Within the sound of silence

Narrow streets of cobblestone

''Neath the halo of a street lamp

I turned my collar to the cold and damp

When my eyes were stabbed by

The flash of a neon light

That split the night

And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw

Ten thousand people, maybe more

People talking without speaking

People hearing without listening

People writing songs that voices never share

And no one dared

Disturb the sound of silence

"Fools", said I, "You do not know

Silence like a cancer grows

Hear my words that I might teach you

Take my arms that I might reach you"

But my words, like silent raindrops fell

And echoed in the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed

To the neon god they made

And the sign flashed out its warning

In the words that it was forming

And the sign said:

"The words of the prophets are

Written on the subway walls

And tenement halls

And whispered in the sound of silence."

1、I''m 71 and when I was in high school, I''d play this song (album) all the time and loud. And then my mom would yell up the steps that my stereo was too loud. So, I''d turn it down a bit and close my bedroom door. I''d just drift away for several minutes as this song completed its spin on my stereo record player. It helped me cope with growing up in the 1960s. And then I was drafted into the Army and was sent to the Vietnam War. When I came home I hugged mom, said hello to everyone. Eventually, I broke away and I went upstairs, found this S&G album and placed the 12-inch vinyl on my stereo. I closed my bedroom door, turned the sound up to high and began to work on forgetting the 1960s, a terrible time for me and many others.

(回复1)I was a young girl in the 60''s and I remember laying in bed praying to God thanking him for making me a girl so I didn''t have to go to war. I remember hearing of older brothers of friends having to go. I thank you very much

2、This is a song written more than 50 years ago and is nowadays more relevant than ever. And this, my friends, is timeless art.

3、If they don''t play this at my funeral I wont come

4、Listening to this on March 28 2020 while the streets are emptying all over the world.

(回复1)Me too. The world is not ending. The best is yet to come for humanity. We are going to be brave, kind and refuse to lose our faith in each other. We are being controlled by something nonhuman who we think are human, which makes us believe that people are capable of evil.

5、Listen with earbuds

Take out right earbud - hear garfunkel
Take our left earbud - hear simon

9、This song is so prophetic of the world we live in today, I am 70 years old I remember the song so well, as a teenager in the sixties

1)The old good times are lost forever and will never come back because humans are stupid and never learn from the past.

13、"People talking without speaking.
People hearing without listening"
So true.

14、"And the people bowed and prayed, to the neon god they made ". Wow. More relevant than ever.

15、The problem is, we didn''t take these men seriously when they warned us...
Nonetheless, as a bassist. I say the bassline is beautiful.

16、Sad to think that if a song like this was written nowadays it probably wouldn’t even chart. Music these days is awful, and this is coming from someone in their 20s. The music industry is all about money now. Thank god we still have a record of beautiful music like this

21、This was my dads favorite song. He always played and listened to this song while he''d drive me to dance or gymnastics. He was always so proud of me and supported my hobbies and talents. 3 years ago he was diagnosed with liver cancer. The doctor told my mother he only had 2-3 years to live. Of coarse she never told me and my little brother until recently. My dad tragically passed away recently. 9/10/2019 to be exact. Its hard to have him gone but i know he isnt in pain anymore. This song has been a huge comfort for me. Its so complex and of coarse it hits close to home. Im planning on learning this song and working on it until im perfect, so I can sing this piece of art whenever I want

22、This maybe one of ten deepest texts in any song ever written. Even while ignoring the amazing vocals, music, and production.

23、The music of the ''60''s was about change, revolution, disrespect -- We could use the same courage, culture, and vision again today, 2019.

25、wow this song really make me wanna create a time traveling machine and go back in time in the 60s to tell how the world will be in 2019

26、For me this song is so evocative of what was to be - I see my children and grandchildren so consumed with technology and the silence between not only couples but also the lack of communication between ourselves - so very prophetic

27、This is not only one of the most important songs of all time but also one of the best, still relavant

32、No auto tune, no choreography, no stupid lyrics about “bitches and money”, no big effects - just real singing and music.
That’s what it should be

33、“Silence like a cancer grows”

34、Paul Simon is great, and a fantastic guitar player...but Art Garfunkel sounds like an angel.

35、these two make all other singers look amateur. This is the pinnacle of vocal music. Pure and unspoilt.
