Probably didn't steal the pyramid because it was too heavy

The irony is that the British were so busy stealing other people's history that their own history cannot find space in London. I was shocked that London does not have a dedicated Anglo-Saxon history museum when I visited last year. Only small ignored corners of the British museum has things like the Sutton Hoo treasure being dwarfed under the glory of the Egyptian and Middle-Eastern collection. I was genuinely feeling sorry for them.

They have even looted the word “loot” itself.

So ancient artifacts to the British is like oil to Americans.

Some Country: Has some Ancient History
Britain: is for me?

"Disputed ownership" is a typically British way of saying something is stolen.

For Brits who think this is ok. Imagine if the French came in a war, grabbed the half of Stonehenge and took it to Paris.

Never ask:
A woman: her age
A man: his salary
British Museum: where they got there stuff

Tourists visit this foreign museum to see their own cultural history

Probably didn't stole the Taj Mahal because it was too heavy

You know what? Sometimes I think they keep the artefacts like they were some trophy. My nation was colonized by the British forces, so some of our artefacts were there. Some of you might say that it is better there in the Western museums for people to see, but for the people that had suffered under the colonization, returning these artefacts.. I think it would be some sort of closure. The colonizing has ended. Why would returning what had belonged to the nations colonized be so strange?

It shouldn't even be called The British Museum if it's mostly filled with art from other nations/cultures.

Imagine robbing someones house and displaying their stolen stuff in your house

Imagine debating about stolen artifacts.
"You stole our stuffs. Give it back."
"We stole it from you so now it's rightfully ours."

As John Oliver once said: "The British Museum is basically an active crime scene"

We actually talked about this a ton in a Greek art class I took last year. A possible solution I personally was a fan of was to return the stolen goods and have museums like the British museum display life size 3D prints. Then they still have their display and guests can more readily interact with the obxt AND bonus is multiple countries can display the same artifact and share that countries history

The Queen's crown is made of stolen jewelry.

"The British Museum is full of stolen artifacts"
Every sixty seconds in Africa, a minute passes

"How do you think your ancestors got these? Do you think they paid a fair price? Or did they take it, like they took everything else?"

They told us Africans didn't contribute to civilization but their museums are full of our ancestors arts and crafts. They could have stolen the Great Pyramid, it’s just that it was too heavy.

I am à Nigerian and I am an artist. A lonely tear rolled down my cheek as I watched this.

"we won't give your stuff back but you can borrow it if you want"
this is so frustratingly sad. people have a right to see and experience the history of their culture on their own land, especially after they've gained independence from colonial rule.

the British act like it's not a big deal, but how would they feel if the same thing happened to them? what if the big ben was broken into small pieces and shipped to Greece, just like they did with Parthenon

French museums:(pretends they're not related with this matter)

I went to the British museum and saw the Rosetta Stone. I was like “omg it looks so real”. No duh! It was the real one

Idk cause on one hand the British did steal the artifact and they definitely don’t own them but you do have to admit that more people are seeing the artifact then they would if they were in some country.
But on the other hand if these artworks came to its original country’s that would be great for tourism and boost their economy’s.

Can we have our history back?
British: But we are still looking at it

At least the artifacts still exist. What about the non-physical heritage: languages, cultures, religions... have been eradicated by British and European colonialism.

Even the kohinoor in queen's crown is disputed. She claims that it was gifted to them but that's all lie

I doubt those artifacts would be safer at their land of origin

I’m Assyrian and I’m glad the British have many artefacts from Mesopotamia. If they didn’t then it would have been destroyed by ISIS. People should acknowledge the great service the British have done by preserving many artefacts, which would have been neglected and not as well taken care of in many third world countries.

Lol, this vid is pointless... every big European muzeum have stolen artifacts...

so basically when the rich people steal something its not illegal and they aren't punished for their action.

British logic
Foreigners: “Go back to where you came from!”
Foreign artefacts: “But you belong here!”

The important artifacts and items of human history are actually more safe in The British Museum than for say in Egypt or Peru.

People from ex-colonies are forced to travel to London to see their stuff. What about their counterparts which remained in the original countries? Ah, ok, they were destroyed, burnt, exploded, melted, shattered, sold, dismounted. So, in a certain way it is a positive thing that the metropolis stole them -- it played a vital role in their preservation as wealth of all humanity.

Please do something about the ‘Irish famine’, and how it was actually genocide not famine. Ireland had enough food to feed its starving population but yet the British continued to ship food out of Ireland. Leaving people to starve to death, people literally having nothing but grass to eat. The effects of British colonialism on Ireland is not nearly talked about enough.

When you enter the place you’d think it’s gonna be a eye opening beautiful experience but with every piece you see you realise what the history of acquiring it would have been and what should have been a beautiful experience just turns into a heartbreaking one.
When I went in there, I didn’t anticipate that it would make me feel so sad about all things.
Our rich past adorning someone else’s buildings when ours remain woefully empty.

I mean ethically speaking, you can't return something to someone who doesn't exist anymore
Say for example the Egyptian artifacts, the current Egyptian government is not the same government who orchestrated the creation of such obxts and also, you can't give it back to the people since the creators are already dead
Moder day Egyptian culture is more Arabic and Islamic rather than Egyptian from the Pharaoh era, like the destruction of the Buddha of Bamiyan from Afghanistan by the hands of the Taliban。
Museums offer a free service of safeguarding the past in protection against people who opt to change history and reality

They leave out that the cultures that were "looted" were also destroying such artifacts at frightening rates.
Islam STILL actively destroys such artifacts as do many tribal groups.

and yet if the British didn't "steal" the artifacts, some of them might have been destroyed by "native" zealots from their respective countries.

"For the whole world to see"... yeah sure because anyone can pay for a trip to London

By all intents and purposes these institutions have full ownership of the items. I think a good compromise would be to have these items go on tour through several museums, especially in their country of origin, instead of residing solely in one place.

Ah the irony. England is so tiny and despite being so small it conquered a quarter of the world. This is the prize of the strong.

This happens in the US all the time with Native pieces as well. If you dig up something on private land, you don't have to repatriated it to the tribe it belongs to...most people put it on eBay and it leaves the country forever.

India had one of the richest and largest economies in the world before the British came .

Britain should return all the artifacts back to where they stole from , just to even show some goodwill and compensate the damage they cause to their colonies. Just because USA had the first nuclear bomb didn't mean they start looting and conquering smaller countries. Shamefull history of United Kingdom.

It would be nice not to charge you for storage.

David Cameron has also said he would oppose returning the diamond. “If you say yes to one you suddenly find the British Museum would be empty,”

I'd rather go to 1 place to see a large range of global historical artifacts than to hundreds or thousands of museums around the world.

the rightful owners of the artefacts are those with the facilities to preserve and protect them

Countries with decades of history are not qualified to preserve these cultural relics.

Oh yes give the Bronzes to Nigeria. They should fetch $200 at the scrap yard.lol

why are you surprised? Europeans are colonizers ..
they colonized every continent in this world .. who gave them the right?
of course themselves.

"Can we have our historical artifacts back please?"
"No! They are safe here where everyone can see them."
"I want to see my history can I have a Visa?"
"No! Stop trying to invade our lands."

1. Claim rights. 2. Demand autonomy. 3. Be independent. 4. Demand the return of mineral resources. 5. Cultural relics are required. 6. Demand an apology. 7. Claim compensation and kneel down for insult. So it's good to be stuck at step 5 right now.

Did you know that France was hiding a collection of skulls that belong to leaders of the Algerian resistance and for 150 years they were in the storage of the national museum of Paris until last month were the Algerian government restored them after 6 years of negotiation

"Two robbers breaking into a museum. One has looted, the other has burnt. ... one of the two conquerors filled its pockets, seing that, the other filled its safes; and they came back to Europe laughing hand-in-hand. ... Before history, one of the bandits will be called France and the other England." ———— Victor Hugo

"originals owners trying to retrieve them"
no
Their original owners died long ago
Now some people try to "retrieve" them only because those obxt were made in the place they live today
It's based on nothing and they are not more legitimate than the ones who stole those items in the first place
If you're against the looting that occured in those past times, you should be against the "retrieving" .

Depends on if the museum has a fee or not. If it's free to enter the museum then it should stay in Britain as it is a much more free country and more people could view the artifacts

If you conquer a territory, you own the territory and their property. Even in basic games of conquer you learn that

Technically, British history is the history of conquest. Those treasures are critical to the history of Britain.

London it’s a world capital, it makes more logic these artifacts to stay in a place where thousands and millions of people visit each year; I’m brazilian and few years ago our national museum was set on fire regarding the lack of infrastructure care and we lost our history artifacts;

The weak are 80% of the world's people, the strong are the rest. So the weak are often the loudest voices, but they can't change the world as it is. The comment area is clearly like this, they're just loud.

I'm going to get a bit of flak for this, but let's not forget, at the time these artifacts were taken, said countries were part of the British Empire, therefore the countries who claim them did not exist as independent entities at the time. Most of those items would not have even been discovered without the effort of britain archeologists.
