That depends how you measure success, on which items you’d put in your basket of goodies.
I moved to S Korea from the UK 10 years ago. The number of Covid deaths in the UK in one day sometimes exceeds S Korea’s total since the first death almost a year ago. By that measure, it is successful.
Half of all living former South Korean presidents are now in prison, mostly on corruption charges. Others now dead also spent time behind bars. Is that a success? Compared with other nations where the president imprisons campaigners for democracy to stay in their palaces for life, it is a success.
In terms of giving space, safety and priority to pedestrians, cyclists and those with disability, cars have taken over and routinely park with impunity on pavements and pedestrian crossings.
Like I said, it all depends on your basket of goodies. However, the scales tend to tip towards S Korea being a success, especially if you compare with the North.

I lived in South Korea for 5 years. Koreans work and study hard, I mean really hard. This work ethic actually took a while to comprehend and I felt lazy in comparison.
My Korean friends would often tell me that since they were young their parents or teachers would always tell them that South Korea is a country with limited natural resources so our people are our best resources, therefore we should study as hard as possible and work as hard as possible for the overall well-being of the nation.
我曾在韩国生活过5年。韩国人在工作和学习上非常的努力，我是说真的非常努力。需要花好一会才能理解他们的这种职业道德，相比之下我就有点懒了。

My Korean friends would often tell me that since they were young their parents or teachers would always tell them that South Korea is a country with limited natural resources so our people are our best resources, therefore we should study as hard as possible and work as hard as possible for the overall well-being of the nation.

When the topic of sleep came up, people were shocked to hear that I was always told that a minimum of 8 hours is ideal and recommended in general by doctors. In Korea it is said that 6 hours of sleep is an ideal night sleep, though I know many who averaged 4.
There are study rooms in Korea which are about the size of closet with just a bed and desk and you cram for a month or so before a test.
Many of my Korean friends had degrees and certificates out the wazoo, highest levels of proficiency in multiple foreign languages.
I’m living in Japan now which is also a country that is known for its strong work ethnic, but when compared to Korea it seems laid back. Bottom line is, Koreans don’t mess around and 2nd place is not an option in any endeavor. In a country armed with a population of people with this kind of ethic and skills acquired through this ethic, innovation and success is an inevitable consequence.

Today the success is on the decline due to fierce price competition from China, rising unemployment, rising age of population, missing nuclear power and waste disposal strategy. Not to mention missing unification concept and ongoing tensions with Donald Trump. And we do not know how Corona virus will proceed in South Korea.
While South Koreans are undeniable hard workers, I think they are not smart workers. Productivity is low, disruptive thinking is missing due to confucian mindset. Where is the first South Korean Nobel Prize winner in natural sciences?
And does being successful mean, they are happy? No free time, high devorce and suicide rates! Rising difference between the Poor and the Rich, as being documented with ‘Parasite’.

As a Korean, the answers to this question are impressive because many foreigners spoke work ethic for reasons of success.
I think so too.
The surprising thing about Koreans is that younger generations have stronger work ethic and more competitive abilities.
Even today, I am influenced by the younger generation and try to improve myself.
I hope there will be more jobs for them. It is a just world response to the enormous efforts and talents of the young people.
My vague guessing for one of the reason is Hangul. The easy alphabet for Korean language. From this, Korean kids get very clear feeling to ego at very early time. And they can think logically using their own language ability like adult.

Is South Korea a successful country?
When talked about South Korean success you only hear about the economic success. Economically South Korea is probably rather a developed country. I haven't seen any other data. I think success should not only be measured economically. But since no other data is provided it is very hard to know on which level South Korea is placed culturally and in strict human and social development. I am afraid all the information is a much to economical interpretation lacking all other aspects heavily.
