Voters across the UK believe Scotland is likely to become independent within the next decade – while more than half of those in Northern Ireland want a referendum on a united Ireland in the next five years, according to a series of polls.

The Sunday Times commissioned a series of surveys across the four nations of the United Kingdom to gauge attitudes towards the unx.

The findings highlight some of the difficulties facing Boris Johnson as he struggles to keep the country together following its departure from the European unx.

In Scotland, the poll found 49% backed independence compared to 44% against – a margin of 52% to 48% if the undecideds are excluded.

In Northern Ireland, 47% still want to remain in the UK, with 42% in favour of a United Ireland and a significant proportion – 11% – undecided.

However, asked if they supported a referendum on a United Ireland within the next five years, 51% said yes compared to 44% who were against.

In Wales, where support for independence is traditionally weakest, 23% still backed leaving the UK while 31% supported a referendum.

Across all four nations, more voters expected Scotland to be out of the UK within 10 years than thought it would still remain.

In England, the margin was 49% to 19%, in Northern Ireland it was 60% to 28%, in Wales 49% to 23% and in Scotland itself 49% to 30%.

With crucial elections to the Scottish Parliament coming up in May, the poll found the SNP way ahead on 70% – up seven points since the last elections in 2016 – while the Tories were down six points on 25%, with Labour down five points on 19%.

What is funny in these discussions is the reverse ferret from many Brexiters who tell the Scottish not to consider Sovereignty and instead concentrate on economic reasons to remain...

Thendisnear17From Kent Independently Minded
And the same is true on the other side.
Scottish Remainers supporter another type of Brexit.
Damn the economic future.

Perplexing_Narwhal
Scottish Remainers support another type of brexit
Not really. Scotland voted overwhelmingly to remain in the EU. Scottish remainers saw their votes completely disregarded by Westminster. Equating leaving the EU with leaving the UK doesn’t make sense.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if Scotland became independant, wouldn't the Conservatives hold a significantly larger majority in the rest of the UK than they already do?
I respect Scotlands desire for independance, I just worry that it'd turn what remains of the UK into a bit of an unchallenged dictatorship.
An edit just because this comment was far more popular than I anticipated:
1) I only meant to bear similarities to a dictatorship with things like the ability to pass any law it pleases by commanding the whip, and other flaws in our "representative democracy" where many like myself feel we have no representation.
2) The article mentions how the UK thinks, so I don't think it's unfair for me in the UK to state how I think. Whilst the outcome I mention would concern me, were I given the vote I'd likely vote in favour of Scottish independance because besides my own selfish take, I do empathise and would definitely be pushing for independance, were I Scottish myself.

Last Indy referendum the Yes vote was looking like it was winnning. Cameron, Miliband and the like all rushed up to Scotland last minute to make pleas to the Scottish people to stay. They were lied to to stay.
But above all, EU membership was the deal breaker. The Scottish people were told (lied too) that if they go Indy they are out the EU, that if they want to remain in the EU they MUST vote No.
So they did....and now look where we are.
Anecdotly speaking my entire direct family voted No last time, in part due to the EU argument. They are so far Yes votes now I think they are even keen to help contribute to the movement.

The problem with the UK is that it's effectively a city state like medi Venice. Everything goes towards the benefit of London, and culturally there is a 'Londonification' of the rest of the UK. This is bound to cause resentment to the rest of the country, and Scotland is in a position to do something about it. As an Englishman I'll be gutted to see the Scots go, but it's inevitable given the way this country is geared up. And couple that with decades of incompetent Westminster rule by both parties, well who can blame them?

I’m not surprised. Irish reunification could be on the cards too.
The Tories have repeatedly disregarded the UK outside of England, and England’s heavy vote share has driven us to Brexit, a stonking Tory majority made up of some of the most incompetent politicians this country has ever seen.
Ironic that this is all because of the Conservative and unxist party.

I'm English and I think they will. And I wouldn't blame them at all. If I was Scottish I'm almost sure I would vote for independence, especially post Brexit

dontsendmeyourcat
My guess would be 2024, once covid is less of a serious thing there will be lots of post brexit differences

ComfyDrag0n
I would also want the same for Wales. Wales isn't in the same position as Scotland, but the independence movement is growing for the same reasons that opinion has shifted in Scotland. Namely that we don't feel our nation's voice is being heard or spoken in Westminster. And the voice being spoken there is increasingly right-wing, anti-european. We'd like to distance ourselves from that and establish ourselves with our own values and priorities.

I'm not fully up to speed on the whole situation, so correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the current Scottish healthcare, welfare, and education systems dependent on taxes from the rest of the UK because Scotland itself doesn't come close to generating enough? Don't they also have a small market with regards to good exports? So what would be the point?

The Scottish economy and population are very similar to that of New Zealand (206 billion and 202 billion). Scotland has a slightly higher GDP and slightly higher population but basically the living standards would be similar to that of New Zealand.
Add in the fact they could possibly get back into the EU and also govern themselves and it becomes more appealing. This is especially apparent when you look at how Scotland votes compared to England, the 2 countries want different things but the Scottish aren't getting those things.

Bluebird1973
Don't blame them. Paying more than 70% more in import fees since Brexit. People going out of business. Our hospital supplies have gone up by more than 100%. Any Brexiteers can fight over a tin of beans as far I'm concerned. A basic example is an Xbox game that I'd get for my daughter from Holland used to cost £22. It still costs £22 but now I have to pay a £40 tax. They can choke on their racism

jamisram
I really hope people living in the border counties get an irish-style deal with nationality, cause frankly I want no part in little Britain
