欧盟圈讨论：各国首都的生活和首都以外地区的差别有多大？

1、London is basically a completely different country to the rest of England.

（英）对英格兰的其他地区来说，伦敦根本就是一个完全不同的国家。

Since I’ve lived in London I’ve realised the rest of the country hates it. The rest of the country never misses a chance to say something negative. As an immigrant from when I was a child this surprised me because people from London rarely mention the rest of the UK, and when they do it’s always positive.

自从我去伦敦生活，我意识到国内其他地区的人都很讨厌这座城市。国内其他地区的人绝不会错过任何一个说伦敦坏话的机会。作为一个在还是孩子的时候就来到这里成了移民的人，这种情况挺让我惊讶的，因为来自伦敦人很少会提到英国的其他地区，而但凡他们提到时，说的总是好话。

When I’m in another city or town and say I’m from London, they are so quick to mention their dislike. Where I’m from, that’s rude. People in London would never do that, they always try and say something positive about where you are from, even when they haven’t even heard of it!

而当我身处别的城镇并告诉别人我来自伦敦时，他们话不到三句就会说起他们对伦敦的厌恶。而在我的家乡，这么干是很不礼貌的。伦敦人是绝不会这么干的，他们总会试着讲一些你家乡好的方面，哪怕那个地方他们连听都没听说过！

Living in Leeds, I think it's less that we actually hate London or Londoners and more that we hate how centralised everything is. That's the fault of several governments though, and not yours.

I've always liked London when I've been, and I especially like the underground and how easy it is, although it always feels very crowded (mind you, I grew up in Belfast which only has 350k so even Leeds feels suffocating on a Saturday afternoon to me).

As someone who likes London as well, I do agree with you that everything is way too centralised in the UK. Actually, I wish the UK had a much more well-distributed population, like Germany which does not have any ginormous cities where about 20% of the country's population lives (London, Paris, Moscow, Istanbul etc.)

2、Brussels is a world on its own , clearly is still Belgium but so much more international at the same time. The difference with other cities is definitely noticable, it has pros and cons.

Brussels is kind of a dump compared to all the other major cities in Belgium

3、In Dublin they clamp or tow your car if you park illegally, elsewhere they give you a ticket payable within 28 days. Dublin has bus lanes and other places mostly don’t. Dublin grocery stores and shopping centres have paid parking, elsewhere it’s usually free. Dublin has reasonably functional busses, elsewhere doesn’t. Dublin is more expensive but has higher paying jobs. Dublin has more defined social classes whereas other areas usually don’t. In Dublin it’s common to attend a fee paying school, whereas elsewhere wealthy kids attend public school. Dublin has more multiculturalism, which means more types of food, festivals, music etc

I visited Dublin in 2018 and was a bit disappointed. Especially the non existing traffic management made it hard to get anywhere. The narrow roads from 200 years ago cannot cope with today's car traffic, but public transportation is on par of a small town.. I definitely could not live there :-/

I live in Dublin and I absolutely hate it. I don't feel Irish at all and I feel robbed of a cultural identity. The only time I ever feel "Irish" is any time I'm outside Dublin, and even then it's only for a few days at most. Why people continue to live in such an unjustifiably expensive kip is beyond me.

4、The biggest difference, IMO, is in architecture and urban planning. As Warsaw was destroyed during the war, it was rebuilt partly in socialist realism style. This means wider streets, lots of empty space, terrible sprawl.

In Warsaw, however, old town is neither in the center, nor it's particularly popular as meeting point or party district. More like a quiet tourist trap with lots of old people living there.

5、I've never lived in Amsterdam, but it almost doesn't even feel like the Netherlands. Whenever I visit it feels like I'm on holiday. People don't even speak Dutch in the city centre.

I think it’s so annoying when you walk into a store or cafe and the staff doesn’t even understand Dutch and there’s literally no one to help you in Dutch.
It’s not that I can’t speak English, but it feels wrong to be forced to speak another language in The Netherlands.

Most people would find it mean, but I allways continue to speak in Dutch even if a staffmember doesn't speak the language. I used to switch to English at first but now I find it ridiculous that I can't even speak my own language in my own country if I sit down somewhere to relax. I live in Rotterdam and this happens quite often, so Amsterdam should be way worse in that aspect. If they want to work here, they should be able to at least speak some basic Dutch, especially in the horeca or service sector.

6、I’ve been to both Rome and Paris and personally, I found to Rome to astronomically more dirty than Paris. Paris wasn’t even that bad compared to the piles of garbage on every street in Rome.

I've been in both Rome and Paris and it's totally understandable why they have that reputation. South Europe as a whole compared to North has a nasty reputation. It isn't even about how big the city is. It's about unapologetic idiots taking a piss in front of 10 other people on the street and this being a representative image of the city as well as everyone smoking and throwing their fags straight from the window of their car. I'm France people will systematically dump their beer bottles absolutely everywhere, you could do it in front of the cops and they won't even react.

I come from a rather large regional capital in Bulgaria, the whole country had a nasty phase during the 90s and 00s but even I, being used to live in a pretty dirty place am totally grossed out by some stuff we consider normal in France and Italy.

7、Rome is shit. The rest of the country is much better to live in, especially the more north you go usually

8、Outside of the capital city region, you absolutely must own a car. But here we have functioning public transport.
It's a common joke that everything outside of Helsinki is countryside.

9、Jerusalem is a realm of it's own, absolutely different from Tel-Aviv or any other city

Well, first there's (idk how to describe it) "vibe" it's calming and soothing. The law dictates that everything must be built out of "Jerusalemic stone" which makes everything look old and experienced.

Addition: Terrorism is a thing in Jerusalem and it really scares people who live in different parts of israel to come to the city, but the bit sad truth is people that grew in Jerusalem don't notice most of the terrorism from it being an everyday thing. I know a bus blew up on the coffee place at jaffa street during the intifada and dozens were killed but it isn't something i think about when i walk by

11、The biggest thing about Paris though is how much it feels like it’s designed to impress. There’s of course the super nice architecture and things like that, but there’s also quite a fashion standard that is expected of people. Everyone is expected in some capacity to kind of show off, and it creates a little bit of inauthenticity.

More rural areas in France don’t entirely love Paris, partly because the world often sees Paris as a depiction of all of France, and it just isn’t. People in the countryside are proud of the things they grow or make, and it’s irritating when Paris gets credit as the crown jewel of a country that has so much else to offer.

法国广大的乡村地区不怎么喜欢巴黎，部分原因是全世界经常会认为巴黎是整个法国的写照，但它真的不是。乡下人为自己种植或制造的东西而感到自豪，当巴黎被誉为一个国家皇冠上的明珠时，就挺让人恼火的，明明这个国家还能拿出很多别的好东西。

12、It's quite different. Maybe not so much from Faro or Porto area. But in relation to the interior, it's really different. People from the interior and the Islands live simpler lives, many of them don't even own a computer or know much about the Internet. Not that they are poor, they just don't give much importance to that. Life in those places is very self centered. Kind of like those American small towns from the movies and series.

The majority of people in Portugal live by the sea, especially in Lisbon or Porto. In Lisbon is 1/3 of the whole population. In the interior and islands people usually work in the primary sector or simple businesses.
I honestly envy the people who live outside of Lisbon and the other big cities.

葡萄牙大部分的人口都生活在海岸边，大都在里斯本或波尔图。里斯本的人口占到总人口的三分之一。内陆和岛屿的人们通常做着第一产业的工作，或是做做小生意。
说实话，我挺羡慕那些生活在里斯本和其他大城市之外的人。
