Such a balancing act.
Too much sun = cancer Not enough sun = cancer and other issues

Melanin? Melanoma is cancer

Yup.
Melanin protects you from melanoma & other skin cancers, but limits your ability to synthesize the D.

interesting theory, I'll admit its convincing. why else would lighter skin be naturally sexted in spite of its increased risk of cancer?

That’s why light skinned European people developed the skin mutation. Pale skin synthesizes more Vitamin D in regions where there is a lack of sunlight.
And the diet included more fish at the higher latitudes. However it would remain a challenge until sunlamps and supplements appeared.

Yes, I remember reading that fish nutrients were extremely important in early European diets. Salmon, herring, sardines, and cod are all fish in the early European diets that are high in Vitamins A & D. The early Scandinavians even produced and consumed cod liver oil during the winter months. It was later discovered that cod liver oil could be used to treat Vitamin D deficiency, fight rickets, and treat rheumatism. The Vikings were really ahead of their time!

Vitamin D is a hormone and we don't fully understand what it's doing in the body. It has some properties of steroids like cortisone and may suppress the immune system in excess.
I would be careful with supplementation, just as I would be careful with other medication. Did you know high dose antioxidants may infer with your bodies ability to kill cancer cells? E.g. vitamin A supplementation increases lung cancer risk.

20 minutes on the sun in summer will get you 20000IUs. Whereas in the winter in many places your body does not get enough UV light to generate ANY vitamin D.

I appreciate your comment because I supplement with D3 and live in an area known for D deficiency. I have considered taking more than one 3000IU capsule if it could help me, but I do not know enough about the toxicity risk. While I'm about to go do some research for myself, could you also recommend some sources for learning about how much vitamin D my body might produce in the sun, and whether exogenous supplementation is different than endogenous generation in terms of safety in quantity?

johnny_kobra
Not the user you asked, but: Blood tests are the only sure way of knowing your vitamin d levels. That said, the amount of vitamin d produced in the sun is dependant on your skin type, amount of uv, exposure time and exposure area. Vitamin d received from sun shouldn't lead to overdosing, since there seem to be mechanisms preventing that. They don't exist for consumed vitamin d though, so you can overdose by taking too much but d. That would require a lot though. Based on the studies I've read, if you exceed 8000 IU daily for an extended period, risk of an overdose exists. At 4000 or lower you should be safe. Note however, that without blood tests, you simply don't know. 1000 should be safe for anyone, but might not be adequate if you have really low levels. I'm not a medical professional though, this is just info I've obtained. I go through yearly blood work and with 4000 IU daily I get my levels where they need to be during winters. During summers I stop and get it from the sun. I use UV index to estimate exposure times to minimize skin cancer risks.

have MS and there has been shown to be a strong correlation between vitamin D deficiency and rate of MS amongst a given population. So much so that any neurologist will tell you to start taking vitamin D as soon as you are diagnosed with MS. My understanding was that at most latitudes, spending time in the sun won’t get you close to the amount of vitamin D that is beneficial. I take 4000 IU daily now that my vit D levels are in a good place (I have blood taken monthly), after having previously dosed at 10000 daily.

I always draw a vitamin D level on patients and most are low. I shoot to achieve levels between 50 and 75 for people. It takes most patients at least 3 months to get their levels up to where I want them when they are low. You need a vitamin D level to identify the appropriate dosage though.

The problem here is that vitamin D supplementation seem to have little effect on cancer (though this can of course change with future studies). What most Vit D studies miss is that Vit D is a cofounder in a lot of cases. Old age and disease led to low vitamin D levels, but are not necessarily caused by low vitamin D levels.
That's why many studies show correlation between ill health and inadequate vitamin D, but shows little improvement when given vitamin D as a supplement

This thread is full of praise for vit d but probably without good evidence.
Currently we know for sure that vitamin d is important for bone health. That is what we know.
Otherwise most of the evidence for vitamin d is correlation. When they do suppliment studies there is no evidence that supplimenting helps anything other than bone health.
The best lix in the thread is this one
Otherwise I tend to find wiki is pretty reliable and it states much the same as what I have said.
I use a few medical resources that are behind pay walls and they tend to say the same thing too.
In Australia where I work the government has asked doctors to cut down the amount we test vit d because it is largely a waste of money outside of osteoporosis.

Back in April, when I first read that Vit D mitigated the severity and number of symptoms of Covid -19 (and I took a job as an essential worker) I began taking it daily. A few weeks later I was a different person and the only thing I changed was taking 3,000 UI of Vit D. My depression lifted and I had better energy and focus.

Correlation does not mean causation. From the conclusion you've quoted above, it may simply mean that vitamin D deficiency is a marker of sever mood disorders. From that research alone, you cannot conclude that prescribing vitamin D supplements can resolve mood disorders.

That's exactly what I believe. I have a lot of experience with this population (I lived in a group home for the mentally ill) and the #1 hobby of people with mental illness is hiding under their covers in the darkness and never going outside.
Being outside correlates with higher Vit.D levels, going outside more means walking more, interacting with people more, petting more neighborhood puppers. It means you don't hate yourself and aren't afraid to be judged.

I discovered that I had a vitamin D deficiency (10ng) and started supplementing D3. It has resolved a lot of my insomnia issues, sleep deprivation and general fogginess.
Blood serum D3 lab results are given in 10 ng/mL factors typically. Levels are usually grouped as follows:
0-10ng: highly deficient and at risk for bone weakening; can't efficiently absorb bioavailable calcium. Osteoporosis, bone fracture risk in the long-term.
10-20ng: deficient and at risk for the same factors as above.
20-30ng: low but normal
30-40ng: normal
40-50ng: normal
60-70ng: high but normal, shouldn't supplement
70ng+: high, don't supplement
150+: toxicity may occur, vomiting, nausea, constipation.
One common misconception is that people who live in sunny areas don't have vitamin D deficiency. While sunlight does produce Vitamin D from dermal reactions, it's still possible to be deficient even if you spend all day in the sun. Elderly, dark skinned people, genetic dispositions, etc. can all contribute to not manufacturing enough vitamin D from UVB light.

Vitamin D or D3 is the new cure-all pushed aggressively to the market. It was already pushed hard in 2011 but hard evidence for vitamin D health claims remains lacking to this day. A lot of may, can, could but not many robust results. If you are deficient, yes it may be beneficial. But no one has evidence if being old and frail is the reason for being vitamin d deficient or if it is the other way round.

I am A Scientist™ and there's enough evidence for vitamin D supplementation being beneficial and most of us not getting enough that I do take a vitamin D supplement daily.
You're especially likely to have low vitamin D if you live further from the equator and if you have darker skin; for most of the U.S. there's not enough sun in the winter to make vitamin D, no matter how much time you spend outside. Just don't go crazy with it and take insanely high doses, because it's a fat-soluble vitamin and you can take too much and end up with toxicity.

How much is too much?

burnthrowaway7378
There isn't really a single straightforward answer to that. The upper limit on what is recommended as safe is 4000 IU/day from all sources (total of supplement + food). How much it takes to actually cause harm is less clear and it depends on the person and the dosage frequency and how we're defining toxicity and harm.
If you're not taking incredibly high doses as a supplement you're probably fine unless you have some underlying disorder affecting vitamin D metabolism.
200,000 IU a day is definitely too much. They did that in the 1940s and people developed hypercalcemia. 50,000 IU once every two weeks was found to be fine for the 6 years it was monitored in one study. Another study found that 20,000 IU per day made blood levels go up significantly (like higher than is recommended), but no evidence of toxicity,
I wouldn't take over 4,000 IU/day personally, and I think it's unwise to do so unless you have a good reason and are having you blood levels checked by a doc. Just because they couldn't find evidence of toxicity in a small sample of healthy adults in the time frx they were checking doesn't mean that it's completely safe for everyone.
