I'm a Chinese adoptee and I have never felt connected to my origins and never learned anything about the country where I was born due to part internalised racism due to my environment, and part other personal circumstances. I only recently came to accept the Asian side of myself and still have a hard time sometimes wanting to acknowledge myself, especially with what I've been put through during my childhood. I not very long ago came to know the name of the city I'm from, and started gaining an interest in catching up to this amazing and profound cultural and historical heritage. I have felt very much like an outsider not fitting in with the world where I grew up, but also the world where my roots are connected. Through your renditions of the beautiful traditional music I feel as if I'm at least a little bit closer, and I'm so very grateful for that connection. I don't know if I will ever feel like a part of the culture, having always been outside it, and it saddens me, but at least listening to this makes my heart ache and long for it. I'm very thankful for that kind of gift.

No one can choose their family and childhood coming to this world. We all get brought to this fxxxing cruel world without being consulted. But on the other hand, this world is also full of love and beauty. For good people like you and me, all we need to do is don't lose your faith and keep seeking it. Plus, compare to those poor kids who often get shot by random bullets or starved to death in those unfortunate third world countries and regions all over the world, you are already considered lucky as hell. You have no idea how those kids struggle their shit out just to live a normal life. For you, that life is already there waiting and you only need to grab it. Talking about fairness in life, your life is being jealoused by millions already as a matter of fact. So just be confident, be strong. You can't change who you are. You can only turn what you already have to you greatest strengths. Come on, think about it. You grew up in western world but also have eastern origins. That's such a unique feature of yours. Embrace it, cultivate it, and let yourself grow into something fasinating. Turn yourself into a mix of western and Chinese cultures, these are THE BEST two civilizations of the entire human history. What more can you ask for!

@Robin Fei This really isn't about me comparing myself to more unfortunate ones than me, and I wouldn't say that loss of identity and culture is necessarily something to be dubbed as a "lesser trauma". I'm sure you were meaning well in writing this comment, but the tone of it is really quite accusing in trying to diminish my feelings. You don't know me. you don't know where I grew up, in what kind of neighbourhood, or what my parents are like. There really is no way for you to be able to rightfully say that I should consider myself lucky. You reasoning is simply that my situation could have been worse, and that other people have it worse which you logically cannot even know since you do not know me. Your arguments are fundamentally flawed, and me expressing my loss of identity thoughout my life does not in any way invalidate anyone else. Never have I ever mentioned anything about the direction of my life being fair or unfair, only that I feel grateful for being given the opportunity to finally be able to start learning about myself. I really hope you become more considerate when commenting on these kind of subjects in the future.

I grew up in 5 countries and now live in a 6th one (though I'm still in my early twenties). I carry my "identity" and "home" in my heart and soul more than anyplace else - a mix of admiration and people and places and prayers that I know and don't know - and I think this kind of journey seeking to understand ourselves and our identities is a beautiful one and makes life all the more adventurous and wondrous. I wish you the best self-discovery adventures mate! Atleast there's a whole bunch of us "misfit" multi-culture/place young people!

How I wish u could learn more about the great and long history of China authentically in the primary and junior high school of CN! it has been discovered to last for more than 5000 years from the ancient tomb found recently. And in the history book, From xià 夏 to shāng 商 to zhōu周, to great Qin 秦，to Great Tang, Song, Ming, Qing. And all the beautiful words of poems from Tang and Song Dynasty! This is the quiet and tender power of Chinese culture, not intense, but has the deep and ancient vibe, all rooted in the History, music, literature, and when u truly immerse yourself in it to study it, u can truly feel connected to it. Hope u could learn more!

And there are many historical and aesthetic things going on there, like Hanfu. There are various styles becoz they are from different dynasties such as Tang, Song and Ming Dynasty. Also, the ‘Night banquet of Tang dynasty’ 唐宫夜宴 performance in the Henan Spring festival gala 河南春晚 is spectacular.

Very beautiful indeed. The clunky but practical microphone-stands kinda ruins it imo. I'm sure they could have found a more discrete way to just position microphones. The cables would be quite easy to hide as well.

In my opinion (Chinese living in the US), one of the essences of Chinese traditional culture is "acceptance", like in music, painting, poem, etc. As a civilization, China has witnessed countless dynasties, kingdoms, and rulers that once dominated its stage but inevitably all faded away. It rises and falls; prospers and delines; had reached the zenith and also been on the brink of collapse. Its very existence is not laying on the force of self striving, but the knowledge that nothing is immortal in the face of time.

For so long, growing up in the US, the American culture made me feel ashamed of my roots. The American society laughed at everything I did culturally, i.e. the food I eat, the music I listened to. As an adult, I grew more and more acceptive and appreciative of my culture. As a musician, I learned the violin at the age of 6, practiced extensively everyday. Now I am working with Philip Glass, however, for some reason their music just never connected with me. As a child, I was so excited when I hear 笑傲江湖, and now I realized who I am. I am Chinese and I love Chinese music and culture. I value my training in classical western music, western recording and production. This! This music I cannot put into words and it inspires me to learn more about every Chinese instrument, culture, and history.
长期以来，我在美国长大，美国文化让我为自己的根感到羞愧。

I see people here talk a lot about culture and how sometimes the society does not accept their decisions in life, for example I'm Russian, living in America and I love the asian culture. I sometimes get pick on by my classmates because of my liking, its just the history is just mesmerizing and etc. it's just phenomenal learning about how the different clans in china took over empires, etc. I found myself enjoying this type of music not that long ago, it takes away the stress that builded up from overthinking and school, it takes you to another place away from the problems that are in your life. Im open to different genres of music, pop, k-pop, rock, soft rock, classic , and yayue. and i enjoy all of them.
