(Farmers are asking dog walkers to keep their pets on leads during the critical lambing season.)

Farmers are warning that attacks on livestock by dogs are reaching “epidemic proportions” as they brace themselves for a surge in dog attacks heading into peak lambing season.

An increase in dog ownership during the pandemic, especially among inexperienced dog owners, saw the cost of dog attacks on livestock rise 10% last year to £1.3m, according to research published by NFU Mutual.

Rebecca Davidson, rural affairs specialist at the insurer, said: “It’s a critical time in the farming calendar and there is widespread concern as we enter the peak lambing season that there will be a surge in new visitors who are simply unaware of the Countryside Code or how their dog will behave around farm animals.”

The start of lambing season has been fraught for farmer Gordon Wyeth due to attacks on his sheep by pet dogs. He estimates that the number of attacks has doubled since the start of lockdown. “We had a ram that was bitten through the throat and died, we had six lambs [killed], I think that was the next day. And then we had a husky chasing in-lamb ewes, the day after that. One ewe died after that one,” he said. “The problem is reaching epidemic proportions. It’s so much worse than it ever has been.”

The revised Countryside Code, published on 1 April, advises visitors to keep their dogs “under control and in sight” – guidelines that farmers fear do not go far enough in educating dog owners.

It is a criminal offence for a dog to chase or attack livestock, known as “worrying”, and owners are liable for a £1,000 fine, even if the dog appears to cause no harm.

Davidson said: “Even if a dog doesn’t make physical contact, the distress and exhaustion of the chase can cause sheep to die or miscarry.

These attacks cause unbearable suffering to farm animals, as well as huge anxiety for farmers and their families as they deal with the aftermath.”

Wyeth, who is one of the largest sheep farmers in Britain with 12,000 sheep across the south of England, has suffered more than most.

In one attack, in 2016, he lost 116 sheep and lambs, which is thought to be the worst attack on record in the UK and is certainly his biggest single loss in 35 years of sheep farming.

He said: “They were pushed into a gateway in a gully and smothered. We just found a great big heap of dead sheep pushed up against the gate. We never found the dog for that one.

“We were mortified. When you’ve got lots of animals you get used to death and everything else, but it’s a different kind of feeling – it’s emotional when it’s such a waste and the animals are suffering.”

He said signs put up around the farm are often removed by dog walkers and police seem reluctant to take action after attacks.

The National Police Chiefs’ Council lead for rural and wildlife crime, Chief Constable Darren Martland, said police forces were “strengthening their response to rural crime” and urged rural communities to be “our eyes and ears”.

But despite livestock worrying being a crime, Wyeth has been left fighting dog owners both in the civil courts and in his own fields. He said: “You’d be amazed the abuse we get when we pull anyone up about not having their dogs on leads.”

Wyeth say he is a dog lover and owns 10 dogs himself. He blames the owners for attacks, adding: “There isn’t such a thing as a bad dog, it’s just bad owners.”

Dr Jenna Kiddie, head of canine behaviour at the Dogs Trust, warned all dog owners to be on their guard around the sight, sound, smell or even expectation of livestock.

She said: “It is important to remember that chasing is part of a dog’s normal behaviour, and that any dog is capable of chasing, irrelevant of breed, type, age or size.”

But on top of the damage their dogs can do, and the risk of being fined, owners have another reason to be concerned.

The law protects farmers who shoot dogs that are chasing livestock, and Wyeth has shot pet dogs in the past. He said: “It makes you feel sick for weeks, it’s horrible.”

But he added: “We’ve just started lambing so I take my gun with me. I can guarantee you, within the next two or three weeks, a dog will attack my sheep and I will shoot it.”

I’m an actual farmer, so probably can bring some context. Dog worrying is on the rise, with more public enjoying the outdoors, I have friends who have shot dogs, it is horrendous for them, the dog and the owner. No one wins.
Do yourself a favour if you own a dog when you’re near livestock just put it on the lead. Doesn’t hurt anyone, once you’re through the field let it off. Don’t make someone shoot your dog because your irresponsible.

I saw a post today about actual people chasing sheep so they could get a picture of themselves holding a sheep. The farmer then tried to explain that this can cause serious problems for the sheep, but the people got their phones out started recording the farmer and arguing with him.

local hills near me have semi-wild horses, very sweet and lovely. But arseholes always go up to them to get a photo. the adults dont generally mind much it seems, but the young ones are terrified and hide behind their mothers....just leave them alone.
I've also seen the stallions fight, you really do not want to piss them off or get them acting protectively.
I cant understand why people cant just leave animals alone and appreciate them from a distance.

We had an incident round here. A neighbours dog kept escaping while she was at work to go hassle sheep. The farmer warned her twice, like you said no one wants to shoot a dog, in the end it hurt a sheep and it got shot. Everyone was hurt by it as far as I could tell. Obviously the neighbour was devastated.
My dog is a nightmare near sheep and here they do the thing of crossing mountains to find grazing land so I never know where I'll find them. But she's on a lead, if I come round a corner to sheep I turn around and hope she doesn't see them. They have the big protection dogs for the sheep too so theres that.

I'm with you 100% love dogs obsessively but if they were threatening my (imaginary) livestock I'd have no hesitation to do what I had to. Tbh dog behaviour is almost solely down to people.

sobrique
Maybe. I'm pretty sure most dogs have a 'chase' instinct, that a sheep being spooked and running away from them will trigger.
That's not so much training or whatever, just ... well, a dog doing what a dog does, in reaction to a sheep doing what a sheep does.

About 15 years ago I was walking home by a large field and noticed a ewe sleeping under a tree on a warm sunny day. Didn't seem unusual but at second glance something was off and as I got closer could see its abdomen was slashed open, its internal organs on the grass still functioning to some extent, bleeding out, ewe panting like crazy, obviously in shock. Horrific scene, ewe may have been pregnant. I made may way further along and found the culprit - a dog on the loose chasing other sheep on the far side of the field, no owners in sight so may have escaped. Any farmer would have been justified in shooting that dog, although it's not exactly something I'd fully support. Dogs are wild animals despite how well trained they may be. If owners can't take responsibility for their dogs then they should be removed permanently. I'm a dog owner and our pooch has been attacked by larger more agrresive dogs on 3 occasions so I tend to be pretty vigilant around other dogs I don't know.

Expensive_Bison_687
Fully support this. Lock up the owners as well.
went for a walk around a nearby lake today, dog off lead chasing the geese, then charged at me snarling and barking. Thankfully the horrid thing thought better of it before i had to kick it.
Owner could not have given less of a shit and only grudgingly put it on a lead when I confronted him.
Had to warn a family I saw approaching the lake as I left, as if that dog went for a kid I shudder to think what would happen.
everytime I go to the local hills I see inconsiderate bastards letting their dogs run off lead chasing sheep and disturbing ground nesting birds. There are signs everywhere telling them to keep their dogs on leads.
a national trust house near me no longer has chickens in the orchard because people's uncontrolled dogs killed them.
Dog owners - keep your fucking pets on short leads.

It is wonderful that Britians have abandoned the high street for the country, I am hopeful that this is a great start for the decade for our countryside but there is going to need to be a serious education of the general public.

People talk about rights of way yet forget one really important thing about them, that they exist because of people who lived and worked in the countryside, so knew how to behave and what to do and not do.
As for dangers in the countryside I've always viewed famers fields as being analogous to the shop floor in a factory. Fairly safe when empty, but once you add livestock it's another matter.

Fair enough to be honest.
Keep your animal under control or don’t have one.

Had a guy on here recently defending the idea that his ‘puppy’ should be allowed to leap on toddlers, and that if the parents treat the dog violently to get it off their child, then he would fight them. I’ve always been a dog person but some people really shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near animals.

I took my pet dog to a sheep farmer to have him livestock broken in the same way working collies are. Even so, I still keep him on a lead around sheep.
I have every sympathy for farmers who have to resort to extreme measures to protect their livelihood.

One of the puppy socialization things we did was take him to a petting farm and horse stables. So now when we see horses trotting down the road he doesn't bark, we still get him to focus on us.
Unfortunately we never had the opportunity to socialise with a cat, ergo, he barks and chases cats.

When walking through fields of cattle, dogs should be kept on a lead.
And if on a lead they can't go for lambs and sheep's.
We are entering lambing season. Walkers have an absolutely responsibility to keep their dogs under control.
Responsible walkers know these things and more than often act very responsibly. They also don't drop litter. Even when there aren't any bins.
Sadly there are yobs who have no interest of treating anyone or anything with respect. They don't just abuse people and the environment in the cities.

Yeah, I don't get dog owners. You dog is jumping at me, sniffing me, chasing me on a bicycle, and barking at me. Do you think that is ok? Do you think it would be ok if you did those things? No, of course not, that would be harassment. So why do you let your dog do it?
And I certainly do not mind well behaved dogs. But the ones you notice are usually not.
On a farm, a dog has to be on a lead, there is not doubt about it. Everything else just creates conflict.

Tbh the law needs changing; any dog within sight of livestock or children should be on a lead.
Right now it’s down to the local council to set the rules for children’s play areas; most people are completely unaware of the rules, which are typically that dogs must be on leads within clearly designated children’s play areas. No one seems to monitor or enforce this.
Last summer I was playing with my 3 year old in an open field surrounded by swings and slides, a woman walked into the field and threw a ball for her dog down the middle. The animal promptly barreled my girl over trying to get it, sending her flying. Took me months to get her back anywhere near a dog.
Woman refused to apologise, or even acknowledge she was breaking any kind of rule, and encouraged me to call the police if I felt like it. Her friend seemed baffled that I was angered by her behaviour.

Most play areas near me have no dogs signs, or "dogs must be on leads" signs.
The rest of the park is usually fine, it's just the fenced off playgrounds that have the rules.

They really need to be kept on a lead in most places to be honest. A lot of ground nesting and low cover nesting birds suffer from off lead dogs, either through nest disturbance of a dog passing close by or actual destruction of eggs if dogs find them.
I know of 2 cases of this actually being caught on camera at nest sites, but it happens far more widely and is usually unseen.

BerrySinful
What's incredibly annoying is seeing dogs off lead at nature reserves. Often enough, there are organisms there that are vulnerable to dogs. The worst is seeing signs about dogs not being allowed in certain areas or that they must be kept on lead (usually due to ground nesting birds) and seeing people just flat out ignore that. What exactly is wrong with having your dog on a lead in general anyway? No one said it had to be a 1 ft lead. Longer leads exist and work perfectly well to let your dog have a wander but be safe for wildlife and other people.

Fine by me and if i had a dog i'd make damn sure to A never walk it near or on pastures where animals are occupying them and B keep it on a fucking lead if i do have to go past a pasture.
If i didn't keep to those rules and a dog was shot than tough luck its not the farmers fault
