The poll by the National Education unx, which was conducted among teachers, school leaders and support staff in schools in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, revealed an education workforce exhausted after a year of Covid disruption, with 70% reporting increased workload over the last 12 months and 95% worried about the impact on their wellbeing.

Among those who said they intended to leave education, the most common reason given was that the profession was not valued or trusted by government or media (53%), closely followed by workload (51%), accountability (34%) and pay (24%).

Kevin Courtney, the NEU joint general secretary, said it should come as no surprise that so many teachers are thinking of leaving the profession.

It can be hard because it's not just workload it's sometimes social as well.
I worked as a Sixth form teacher which was fine but I did some lessons teaching secondary kids and they were awful.
I remember being told about one bad kid who was a real problem but the school couldn't get rid of him because he was so bad and they had to let him have access to schooling (state schools can't really expel kids). My head asks me, "try and keep him in the lesson for 10 mins before calling to take him out" I was like ok sure. Got to the room Kid was on the table shouting swearing and throwing chairs at people, he threw a chair at me, I tried to urge him to come down (btw he was like 14-15 but the size of 18 years old) he said I was going to kill me if I came near. I called support eventually they came (they were 10 mins late because they were dealing with other problems even though mine was classed as an emergency).
Eventually, we got him out and started lesson 40mins late. 3 days later he was back in my class again and was just as disruptive. This went on for a term.
I almost quit, luckily I was mostly sixth form teacher so only had to handle it twice a week. But it did push me to move to private education.
I can't imagine the teachers who work full time at secondary.
I can really understand. Schools are understaffed, under-supported, and the Kids are awful.

My reading of the literature is that a lot of these kids probably are redeemable or manageable, but serious patience, and a serious therapeutic / evidence based approach is required to work with their behavioural issues. Obviously a boots on the ground teacher is not the one who could be administering this on the fly (interventions need to be more proactive than reactive). But of course you need the resources, time and staff to carry out such interventions.

The issue is it only takes one of these kids to ruin the education of 20 others. My own schooling experience was ruined by it.
If they are redeemable that work has to be done away from the classroom. Schools should have the power to quickly remove these people so others can learn.

Qualified two years ago. Quit six months ago. What a truly horrific job it is. In at 8am, leave at 5pm (if you're lucky), spend on average ~2 hours an evening at home marking/planning.
Then when at work you'll at the very least be verbally abused. If you're unfortunate enough to have a "bad" child (severe autism or just a general shit) you'll probably have to take action not to be physically assaulted during the school week as well.
It really is a horrendous job and I'd encourage anyone considering it not to do it. Even if you like working with children and like the idea of helping them develop into good people, it will wear you down very quickly and you'll become resentful of your friends and family whose work finishes the second they leave the office and doesn't start again until they sit back at their desk the following morning.

Sorry, don't believe it. Quit and do what? Give up their long holidays and generous pension to do what exactly? Take a voluntary pay cut (once benefits are factored in, perhaps huge cut) to work longer hours in a private sector job? Doubt it.

Man you have a poor opinion of teachers, I work in a good school and teach generally good kids. I think the work load and benefits are bang on for my job.
I have also worked in some shitholes and the fact is it sucks. If I had to go back I would consider a change of career.
More important than 'what else will they do' is ' what will happen to the country if we alienate good teachers'
The shithole I worked at couldn't get science teachers so the kids just got crappy supply, new ones every month.
If you really think the perks are great, ask yourself why you wouldn't do it? There is a reason few people choose it now.
Find a good school and it is a good job, but for me that is 1/4 schools i worked in and I feel very lucky atm.

I have a poor opinion of the teachers unx. The unx forced the govt into creating a 2-tier education system very recently, where teachers kids could continue to be educated full-time in smaller classes while private sector kids relied on their parents teaching full time from home. Nothing against teachers as individuals, only the unx.
I have sympathy for the teachers of kids with bad parents. I expect there are many of these kids in the shithole schools. Those kids have little chance from birth, which is very sad, and it's very difficult for teachers to battle against a bad upbringing. I went to school with some kids who had their father in prison - every one of those kids also ended up in prison.

On the one hand , these sorts of surveys seem meaningless. Does anyone ever check if any of them did quit afterwards. If you ask people in difficult jobs - are you thinking if quitting? They will say yes but it doesn’t necessarily mean they actually will. It’s like people ‘thinking’ of leaving the country if this or that political party win.

A big change in the last 10 years or so is a reduction in the respect given to teachers from the government and in turn parents.
Becoming a teacher takes 5 years of training yet parents often act like you're worthless and exist only to try to irritate their children. When you're in that position and no one backs you it's starts to wear on you.

This has been the story for a long time. Workload is one aspect I could get behind changing. But I do feel those that leave the profession earlier in their career didnt really have a clear idea of what teaching is.
Those taking early retirement makes sense as the profession has had to upskill quickly. It is a lot of work.

I’ve heard from colleagues teaching in England that teaching conditions in academies are horrendous. Continued employment being dependant on pupils hitting unrealistically high targets, an expectation for them to work in school on weekends and holidays .
All of the rights that teachers in the 80’s gained (through strike action) for teachers today don’t apply in acadamies, and these rights are being chipped away in state schools too. Unfortunately the government has turned the public against teachers so there’s little support .

You can't lump them in as one category of 'academies'. Unrealistic work expectations are the same across the whole profession.
The majority of academies follow the exact terms and conditions of employment as local authority maintained schools.

A gentle reminder that we have around 15,000 fewer secondary school teachers than we did in 2016, and the teacher retention rate is getting worse, not better.
This is what a decade of austerity and real-terms funding cuts looks like. This is what it looks like when there is no work-life balance.
I did my PGCE in secondary physics in 2010 and taught in permanent positions until a few years ago when I finally burnt out and went into supply teaching. It's getting worse, not better. 50-60 hour weeks are the norm. The schools I've been posted to in the last few years have been at breaking point. Granted, as supply staff you're more likely to see struggling departments with long-term vacancies, but it seems endemic now. It's not just a small number of schools that are struggling.

Working evenings, weekends and holidays is absolutely the norm. I don't know any teachers who didn't take a pile of marking and other work home with them (hell, we had a meeting on the last day of term where people were assigned significant tasks with a deadline of the first day back)

Yeah I decided to quit after doing the PGCE. Quite frankly the work conditions teachers have to put up with are appalling.
The government seem to think they can solve this by giving out ever bigger bursaries to attract new teacher trainees, but no amount of money is worth dealing with the sheer amount stress and long hours caused by unreasonable expectations, poor pupil behaviour, marking and excessive scrutiny.
