How can you tell if your child is deaf?

My youngest had a few ear infections when he was 2-3 years old. It was usually only one ear and it hurt, so I would know about it. Well, at one point he had an infection in both ears and he didn’t indicate anything was wrong.

What I noticed as his mom was that he wasn’t as obedient as usual. He seemed to be ignoring me, which wasn’t like him. I noticed when I would get close, face to face with them, and then speak, that he would then respond. However, if I called down the hall “lunch time” he wouldn’t come. He seemed more in his own world than before.

So, I did a test. With him sitting down facing the other way, I came up behind him and I made some sounds with different things I had on hand. He didn’t respond unless the sounds were really close or loud.

The next step was to take him to the doctor’s. Sure enough, he had fluid build-up in both ears. He ended up needing tubes inserted in his ears, but he didn’t have major ear problems after that. He did have one major bout when he was about 8 and the ear doctor helped him with that. He told me later that hearing while he had the ear infection was like listening to someone from underwater.

TL;DR. Is your child “ignoring” you when not face to face? Does your child not respond to sounds behind their back in a home test? You can make this a game: have them close their eyes and raise their hand if they hear a noise. If this has been going on for a while, does your child have difficulty pronouncing words? (More typical w-for-r swap or lisping.)

Hey! My name is Georgia, I’m 19. I was born hearing impaired and was diagnosed at 3 years old, technology wasn’t great back then, my mum found out I was hearing impaired as I wasn’t responding to her calls or noises and my younger sister started talking before me. Normally you would have a health check as soon as your born and be referred to audiologists if you have hearing difficulties. I got my first set of hearing aids at Age of 3, I was behind on speech, my hearing has been deteriorating since then (unknown why, natural causes). School has been hard for me, often have no clue what is going on, I moved to school of deaf when was 13, having access and using sign language interpreters in my classes, has been the best thing that has happened to me. My speech has improved. I am Profoundly deaf now, last year I got bilateral cochlear implants and cannot hear without them. Am off to college once this virus settles! :)

Coming from someone is partially deaf. My mom and them noticed things as I was getting older as to me not hearing when they would talk to me on my left side. They would take me into the doctor and the ent ran tests and yes they figured out I had no hearing on my left side. The doctors explanation was that it was due to so many ear infections because I had many.

Fast forward in 2015 I learned that the doctor who originally diagnosed me was wrong. I was actually born deaf and to my surprise it was nothing I did wrong or my parents. I can say that if you are speaking to your child and they do not acknowledge you then yes it may be time to go into the ent. If loud sounds do not seem to startle your child like it would for other children it would be time to go to the ent.

since I was born the medical advancements are way beyond anything I ever thought they would be and can honestly say most hearing can be fixed one way or another nowadays. I was placed with what they call the cochlear implant (baha5) 5 years ago. This changed my life and opened the door for so much in life that I was missing from day 1 of being born. I have issues with hearing out of my right ear and still way into my late 30’s fight day to day with fluid, ear infection after ear infections leaving what little hearing I have left to me feeling like I am completely deaf.

I would not wait and talk to your doctor and get a referral if needed and get a jump start because there future is gonna depend on it.

My wife and I started noticing that our daughter would constantly say “what” when we were talking with her. She had been diagnosed with Kartengener's Syndrome a year prior, but we were never told of this possible complication. Kartengener's is a rare disease that caused all of her organs to essentially form on the opposite side of her body. It also causes what is called “lazy” cilia. She had been unable to expel excess fluid from her ears and lungs since birth. She always had a problem with vomiting and coughing, but her pediatrician had said there wasn't much we could do. After a while, we took her to Phoenix Children's Hospital and they were amazing. We told them of her Kartengener's and they knew exactly what the problem was. They scheduled her for tubes to be put in her ears the next month. It was almost instantaneous that we had a brand new kid. She was finally able to hear! She is slightly behind in speech development because of the hearing loss, but is doing great. It was also super cute the first time we went to a baseball game and she put her left hand over her heart on the right side for the anthem. I call her my lil Dr. Suess character and tell her our hearts touch when we hug!

I had this concern with my oldest child and mentioned it to the pediatrician. He told me to do the ice cream test. I said, “the what?” He said to walk up behind my child and whisper as softly as possible, “Do you want some ice cream?” I did it and discovered my child’s hearing is fine.

We found out our youngest child was deaf when he ‘failed’ the newborn screening test for hearing loss. These are compulsory in our country at birth. He had further testing at 6 weeks of age, which confirmed a bilateral sensorineural severe hearing loss. He wears cochlear implants. All this is paid for by our medicare system.

When my cousin was a little boy he would have terrible temper tantrums and seem to be unable to express his feelings. He had such frustrations. My mother-in-law was visiting and recognized his rages from when her brother was a small boy. Her brother was diagnosed with only 20% hearing in one ear. She suggested my cousin have his hearing tested and, yes, he did have significant hearing loss.

Sneak up on them and yell boo behind them. If they dont react then they are probably deaf.
