Walking along the train tracks. It’s crazy how fast millions of pounds of freight can sneak up on you.

Yes! You would think “how can you not hear that thing coming?” But I run on a trail next to some train tracks and they can literally be right behind me before I hear them.

I recently took a trip down to savannah, stayed in this crappy little motel that had train tracks running out back that were active. Trains woke me from a dead sleep every night and we were a good 2 football fields away from the tracks themselves and on the other side of a thin tree line. How does anyone not hear that shit coming?

I live about 30 feet from the tracks. You kind of become desensitized to it. Not all of the conductors lay on the horn prior to coming into town, and not all of them observe the slower speeds they're supposed to adhere to when operating in heavier populated areas. A fast train really doesn't make that much noise on it's own (or the sound all drones together). It's the slow ones, where you can hear each individual clank and clatter. I lost my dog to a train a year ago. She didn't hear it, neither did I. The only thing that saved my life was seeing her get hit out of the corner of my eye. Traumatic as hell.

I feel that pain... I grew up in a small town just a short distance away from the train tracks. Frequently the neighbors, myself included unfortunately, lost animals to that thing at some point or another. A dog getting off a leash in that area was probably the worst place for it to happen. Although I like riding in trains, I don't think I could ever live in a neighborhood with them ever again. Too many sad memories.

·It wakes you up because the train stays the same distance from you for several minutes, versus coming up behind you at speed. Taking your 200 yards as accurate, a train moving at 45 miles per hour would cover that distance in 9 seconds. Sounds like a long time, but you’ve probably spent at least that’s long reading this comment. If you’re walking along lost in your thoughts or listening to music or whatever, that’s gonna lower your available reaction time too.

A human bite. I worked at a kindergarten and one kid was sometimes super sweet but sometimes really mean. He could switch in a second. While I was naming the colouring pages they were about to get he walked up to me and bit me in the arm. Didn't think it was through, cuz no blood. But it started swelling and getting red and the marks were clearly there. Went to the doc right after my shift. He explained a human bite is the second most dangerous bite there is. Got antibiotics but they didn't work. Arm just kept swelling and getting completely dark purple over two days. Doctor sent me to the hospital where I got strong antibiotics. Basically everything in me was cleaned with that shit, felt weak for months. If it didn't start working by that night is have to come back and be hospitalised to get my underarm removed. Never thought a kids bite could cause this. Luckily the swelling got less and the bruise stopped spreading so I still have my arm, but that was very close.

EDIT: For the people who asked me if I punished the kid, his parents did that for me. My coworker reported the incident to the parents and it was one of his last days there as they were moving (this was planned before he bit me.) His parents were really sorry and a few days later when I worked again, it was the last time I'd see him and the parents brought him towards me because they wanted him to apologize. My arm was still fairly swollen and purple at that point and he was absolutely shocked that he had been the cause of that. He apologized with tears in his eyes and actually hugged me. He promised me never to bite anyone again (apparently he had bitten his family and even other children before! So far no one had gotten an infection apart from me.) and I really think he meant that. Still had a good day with him, but was still pretty mad as I was scared my antibiotics stopped working or something but now that I think back on him he's not a bad kid, just a troubled mind that didn't get the right treatment. But a scare not the less!

Cat bites are extremely serious. Even bite wounds properly dealt with can become infected, as about 90% of domestic cats have, in their mouths, pasteurella - a bacteria that causes infection of soft tissue, among other things. In many cases, infected cat bites require hospitalization and in about 70% of those cases, surgery is required. If your cat often bites, I'd recommend doing some research on why they might be doing it and signs that they may be ready to bite. There's a lot more reasons than just aggression or playful nibbles, for example overstimulation from excessive petting in sensitive areas.

My grandmother was relatively healthy just older and in her 70's when she got a new kitten. It gave her a playful paw swipe and tiny bite on her ankle. Never even drew blood. She got an infection from that (don't remember which kind but it was bacteria that is only connected to cats) and passed away in less than 3 weeks. I love cats but man it can all go downhill in a second.

I wouldn’t try it. If you’re in something like a garage just open as many doors as you can and if possible, turn off the source. I wouldn’t enter the space until it is completely aired out. And probably call 911 first. Better safe than sorry.

This reminds me of college chemistry lab. Official safety protocol for noticing someone has collapsed or passed out: evacuate yourself, send rescue in hazmat gear. If it knocked them out, it will get you too. Especially in a shared lab if you are unfamiliar with their project.

Weirdly specific, but leaking hydraulic fluid from a small crack in a pressurized manifold. It doesn’t shoot out like a gas would, instead looks like droplets, but if you put your thumb over it, it shoots toxic hydraulic fluid into your bloodstream.

this is the concept of an injection injury. this can happen from any highly pressurized liquid like say a power washer. Basically, the high pressure shoots bacteria/toxins/foreign material deep into your tissues, which manifests in something much more serious than what appears to be just a deep cut because the chance for serious infection (like amputation needing infection) is quite high.

This is an understatement of how dangerous hydraulic leaks are. If you're working with hydraulics and you feel a small sting or cut, you need to go to the ER im-fucking-mediately, and even then you may lose a limb.

I can't understand why the fluid isn't being ejected out of the line and rests as droplets instead. Why does it get injected into your skin if it isn't squirting in the first place? Is it squirting but such a fine stream that it isn't visible?

Yes. Precisely. You often can't see or hear the jet. One safe approach is to staple a rag to the end of a bit of wood (or magnet it onto steel tube), and use that to give the pressurized system a once over. If at some point the rag or the stick falls apart, turn the system off and let it sit for a while before you try to solve the problem.

Wait what? This is absolutely bonkers. I 100% thought the explanation was that surface tension meant there was no spray, not that the spray was there but absolutely invisible.

Had a close call once aswell, working on a ~75t digger, and one connector failed/burst and the trail of hydraulic fluid from one «squirt» must have been upwards of 100m..

Also seen a few heavy machinery mechanics with permanent skin damage from just handling it, for instance one guy got it in hes hair, just shrugged it off, wiped it with a towel, and now he has to wear a hat at all times because the skin on hes head is extremly sore and sensitive and will be for life..

That is the same principle we use at the powerplant if we don't know were exactly a high pressure steam leakage is. We've got steam pressures and temperatures of up to 4500 psi/310 bar and 1150°F/620°C. You don't see steam at this temperatures anymore, but it will cut you in half in an instant. To avoid this, we use the good ol' rag-on-a-stick method.

It was actually doing this that alxed my colleagues to the fact that I had a problem and led them to give me an intervention and direct me to get help.
