The good news is that I learned a great deal from this failure. I know what it is like to be the slow kid in a class. I think one of the big problems in our public schools is that the education establishment really doesn't care very much about academic progress. (That's a socialist thing, you might say.) The second problem is that even if these people do care, they no longer know how to do it. So many years have passed since they themselves were beginners, they cannot communicate with beginners. That's why they should all be quiet and listen to John Saxon. He was one of our few real educators.

Self worth. How to recognise your self worth, acknowledge your strengths and capabilities beyond school. These are things that are not taught in school. We grow up comparing ourselves with our peers. If our grades aren’t as good, our confidence drops because we have only ever been defined by our success in school be it sports, drama or academics. But kids have strengths beyond those. An inquisitive nature, or unending curiosity, or ability to manufacture things from your bare hands, or your ability to give a friend a listening ear. There are so many other things which define your worth. You are not just a student in school, you are a daughter, a son, a friend, a source of comfort, a beacon of joy and the list goes on! This realisation can actually reduce a lot of pressure and stress in later life. All your eggs are not in one basket.

But because we are not taught to think like this, we grow up attaching our self-worth to external obxts. The biggest problem is that once that obxt is destroyed or lost, we lose our sense of self. If we cannot recognise our worth, we settle through life for people, things, jobs that we don’t actually deserve. We don’t believe we deserve more and we get stuck with a sub-standard quality of life which we will eventually become dissatisfied with when we are enlightened to our true self worth. But why should it be so delayed! We should start early. Start in school. Self worth is also largely lixed to self love. Without that care for one’s self, life can get pretty out of control!

In high school, I attended a very prestigious prep school in San Francisco, called San Francisco University High. It is renowned as being one of the hardest private schools in the country, and I almost flunked out because I didn’t understand the purpose of many of my classes (and I didn’t have any problem telling my teachers I thought so). And yet, in society they are far less compensated than entrepreneurs with a high school education who have mastered the skill of dealing with people, building high-leverage relationships, and handling situations of true consequence.

But knowing some teachers and talking to them, I understand that the approach to teaching is different. Then, schools were supposed to be part of raising, not only teaching kids. I miss that. Children should be taught basic manners. I am not talking about behavior in the Queen’s palace. I am talking about daily consideration for each other. The school could be a wonderful place to learn that, but teachers do not think that it is part of their job.
