Racial and gender politics. Not only are they filling the media and entertainment industries, they even infiltrated higher education and corporations, resulting in censorship of free speech. Not only so, they even have racial profiling laws such as affirmative action.
Healthcare system. If you don’t have a good job with a good healthcare benefits package, you are essentially screwed. Just to give you an example, currently due to the coronavirus I had to live with my parents in my hometown and work remotely. I tried to call a nearby doctor that takes my healthcare plan from my employer, the nurse told me: sorry, due to the virus the doctor currently is not taking new patients. And apparently this is also true of the other doctors that I’ve called. In the humorous words of my best friend to whom I relayed this experience: “this is ‘Murica, you just die.”

Lack of good public transportation. You simply can’t go anywhere without a car. Busses are arriving late or sometimes every 30min–1 hour. No trains or subways other than in a few cities, and even with them not enough stops. You can’t buy groceries or really go anywhere without a car since the land is just too vast.

People are too sensitive. In America you always have to watch what you say because people behave very passive aggressively compared to people of other country that I’ve seen. You have to essentially learn a whole new language of knowing what you can say and what you should not. You can’t just speak your mind because if you do, a lot of the times people think you have a second meaning to what you say, otherwise why would you be so straightforward eh? Just to give an example. Once I was writing a paper in my office and a guy came in speaking loudly on his phone, I went to ask him if he can please take his call outside. He then came back and told me that I was being too rude and mean to him. I don’t know how saying: “could you please take it outside?”. I guess only in American “could you” and “please” are not actually part of polite speech.
我当时的原话是“could you please take it outside?“。

Cops. Cops in America are too damn cocky and rude, especially in low crime areas. They behave more like mafia people than public servants.
The Media. American mainstream media feigns obxtivity but is possible the most biased media amongst major countries. It mostly focuses on what sells rather than what information is actually important, and uses hack journalism to spread fake news. Even more astonishing is journalists with extremely high degrees would feel perfectly comfortable with making wild unsupported accusations and unsubstantiated “facts.”

Okay, that being said, I will also list out what I like about America just to be fair:
Americans are funny. This is the number one thing about Americans and America that I absolutely adore the most. Americans can practically make good jokes out of anything and humor is such an ingrained culture and a must in all facet of life. For a striking example, in most places around the world, swear words are considered uncivilized. But in America in particular, it’s actually the opposite. If you know how to use swear words in a humorous way, that shows that you are smart, thoughtful, and even civilized. Swear words in especially American English are funny as a result.

spread out land masses. Despite the public transportation issue, I like how flat the landscape of America is. You drive through the country and you see hundreds upon hundreds of miles of flat empty space. Makes you feel really calm and relaxed, that there seems to be no overcrowding problem.

Diversity. Although I absolutely abhor how the concept of diversity is used nowadays—which is just racial and gender politics, what I consider to be true diversity, which are actual contributions, not based on arbitrary human characteristics, is the most endearing. In America you have the opportunities to be in touch with many different cultures around the world. You can go to cultural festivals, talk to people from around the world, be in touch of arts and literature etc.

Individualism. Although not always resulting in good things, the promotion of your individuality is something that I deeply appreciate with the American culture. In America you don’t have to be a patriot and you are less pressured to be a collectivist of some kind. People tend to leave you alone to be yourself and respect your personal privacy and space. In America for example you feel more at ease to dress or look a certain way even if you stand out a lot. Basically you are less pressured to be a conformist.

Friendliness to strangers. Americans are quite exaggerated in terms of friendliness to strangers especially in business settings. This sort of came out of an overly capitalist culture and not always sincere. However, imagine when you are in a bad mood, you decide to take yourself out to dinner or to see a movie, and everywhere you go people greet you with big sparkling smiles and telling you how glad they are to see you. Even when you know it’s probably business as usual it really does brighten your day right up. And I’m sure many of these people really believe in treating strangers this way.

The high standards of living facilities. I think this is probably the biggest reason why most immigrants eventually decide to stay in America. With a middle class income you get to live in big mansions in beautifully built suburbs, with big washers and dryers, AC, and showers/bathtub. Even my parents who really have issues with mingling with Americans and they frequently want to go back to China, resigned to the fact that America just has a much more comfortable living condition. People and houses are not crammed together, living spaces are large, utilities are fancy, streets are clean. Basically you feel you have a lot of room to breathe. Once you get used to this kind of lifestyle it’s really hard to change it.
