I am sharing an incident which will clearly explain why India is poor in sports.
This happened when I was 15 years old. I was good in studies, and like most of the middle class Indian parents, my parents also had great expectations from me. Somehow, I didn’t perform well in one term, which led to the worst academic result of my whole school life. In that same term, I won 3 gold medals in my school sports championship and was awarded as the best sportsperson of the year. We were given the academic results and sports awards and certificates on the same day. I returned home and told her about both the sports and academic results. She went fuming on me and swung a stick lying beside her at me. It missed me but hit the sports certificate on my hand, which caused it to tear from the edge. Even today, when I see the certificate, I can clearly remember that incident. It has a great symbolic significance of what is wrong in this country.
I am anonymous because I don’t want people to judge my mother based on that incident. We come from a lower middle class in a small city called Nagpur. My parents, especially my mother worked very hard and made a lot of sacrifices to provide me quality education from one of the best schools in Nagpur. My mother now accepts that that was the worst thing she could have done to me. I have now found a different passion, and happy with it. I couldn’t have done better without my mother.
It is very easy to blame the government, system, sports officials, and my mother in this case without knowing the underlying cause of the problem. India is a developing country. We are rising high, and rising fast. Most of India’s youth are the first generation to receive a quality education. Our parents don’t want to face difficulties like them and think that education is the only way to better their children’s life. When more than half of the population is stuck in abject poverty, education will be given preference over sports. And seeing the condition of sports persons in the country (obviously keeping aside Cricket), why would any parent encourage their child to sports! The only people we can blame is us- the society which sees sports merely as a hobby, the individual who is so engrossed only in some sports like cricket and questions the condition of sports only once every four years, and the system where corruption, nepotism, and ignorance flourish. Unless our perception towards sports changes, no amount of funding and training can make a significant difference.

There is one sport that Indians can take up.
This sport does not require a ground to play in,
this sport results in high endurance and physical conditioning, muscle development.
This sport is best for a cramped country like India.
This sport makes men out of boys.
The sport has connections to ancient India.
The sport is called Muay Thai.

I was wondering too about why India with so huge population isn’t good in sports but now I see the point. Because it says that you as the nation have scientific tradition. You devote yourself to be good engineers or scientists like Bose or Ramanujan because you can and because you have good enough teachers. For African countries sports seems to be almost the only chance to change a social status. Spending money on education is much more reasonable than on sports. As an engineer you earn reasonable money but as a sportsman only when you are outstanding I guess.

I mostly agree, except for one point:
“When more than half of the population is stuck in abject poverty, education will be given preference over sports.”
China’s rate of poverty is currently 24% as compared to India’s 16%
As we all know, China outperforms us in sports literally everywhere. China won 46 medals as compared to India's 1 medal this Olympics.

i agree with you 90%. but the other 5% goes to our diet(as we all know most professional sports in other countries take lots of protien diet, i mean non-veg food), while we most indians take loks of carbohydrates and fats on our diet. the other 5% goes to our mentality, regional background and outlook

The culture in India historically has focused more on intellectual pursuits (mathematics), spirituality (Himduism, Buddhism) and mind-body connectedness (yoga, meditation), and less on athletic prowess and sporting events. The sports that it has traditionally excelled in (cricket, field hockey, badminton) all have their roots in the colonial era when they were imported by the British. It's a matter of priorities. Many just aren't that interested in a variety of sports

India can improve, unfortunately it's the Asian culture of emphesis of studies and especially STEM more than anything else ,which sabotages the result . I have seriously no idea why there is such a humungous rat race regarding academics ,as if thats the ultimatum of life.

It's not like India is bad at all sports. (P.S. Cricket).
Yes, on average considering sports played in Olympics, India is below average considering its population.
Below are some of the reasons IMHO:
1. Lack of Infrastructure. For playing games at professional level requires good Infrastructure as well as good coach to guide. As of now, this is either very difficult to get or is very expensive. Large chunk cannot afford it.
2. Family pressure. In general, environment in India is such that parents pressurizes there kids to do well in studies rest all is neglected.
3. Lack of Appreciation. Only few sports are well received(popular) in India while rest gets unnoticed. So media doesn't cover much. Hence, players achievements is not enough to earn their livelihood. I must say they are rather forced to earn for living rather than focussing on their game.
4. Lack of promotion: At school level, we just heard or read about specific sports(say fencing) and that's it. So most people doesn't understand the game and hence. Sports is a thing which should promoted from school itself.

In India sportsperson other than cricketers don't have the liberty to take a particular sport as his only profession. They need to work for their livelihood and can only devote the remaining time on sports.

Lack of appreciation for other sports . Cricket is appreciated by all of us but no one is caring about those strugglers who are football, shooting, archery, rugby , gymnastics and so many other . India is bad at sports because the sportspersons does not get the appropriate environment. People who do regular jobs are seen as accomplished whereas sports is not seen as a complete profession .This leads to a players incomplete growth and preparation . Moving on , for playing sports , certain things are necessary which are food and environmental factors.Contrary to the point that our food is not superior , I believe it is our environment which is not keeping our players happy . Happy players play better .
There are lots of factors which are hindering countries sports growth .The first and foremost is the pollution which badly affects a players stamina. Second is the sports ministry is a lazy ministry which does not get due attention due to which the outreach of sports is lesser .Most importantly , a sportsperson has to feel independently which I don't think our sportspersons are able to.

Unfortunately we just see Olympics and judge our athletes. I am all in for constructive criticism and do think Indian sports structure should change and start Breeding talents from young age. But respect where it's due.
Indian Atheletes get paid and sponsored on par with most other emerging countries and far better than other South Asian countries. They also are getting attention from Media and get T.V ads. If you win people will automatically start following you.

There is a lack of sporting culture in India. It’s not a problem with Tokyo, per se. It’s a problem with our mentality. We want our children to ace the JEE and become a computer scientist. We send them to places like Kota, and make them do tuitions to get ahead. We just want them to become doctors or lawyers or engineers, to get good salaries.
Of course, there is nothing wrong with this mentality - in many ways, it is paying off. The CEOs of Microsoft, Google, all the great companies are Indians, born and bred. Medicine and law and engineering in New York and London and all the great cities of the world are fields dominated by Indians.
But, of course, this mindset has its pitfalls. Among them, one of the glaring ones is that we will not let our child become an athlete, lest he fail and be stuck in a bad-paying profession. That cannot and will not happen to our children. Better he become a lawyer, a doctor, and end up in a safe career path.
So our kids don’t become athletes. And even if they do, they won’t have resources, or coaching, because we don’t care about funding public resources for athletes; we care about funding public resources for doctors like AIIMS.
This is the Indian trap - and unless a mindset change comes around, it will continue.
