(Drivers queueing for petrol in Tonbridge, Kent)

When the first people start panic buying it kinda creates a prisoners dilemma; "I don't want to hoard fuel, but if everyone else is there won't be any fuel for me if I don't"

When the toilet paper panic buying happened there was a really good article posted here. It takes something like 5% of people to panic buy for that to have a knock on effect of reasonable people panicking and buying too. Once it hits that point it just keeps going and going.

Although, I guess people can fill up their spare rooms with toilet paper, whereas the amopunt of storage people have for fuel is a bit more limited.

Leezeebub
I fill up every two weeks. Tank was near empty and today was the day to fill up.
Got to the petrol station and had some lunatic screaming at me about panic buying lol. Nah, people still need fuel, even when some people want 3 slices at the pizza party.

You know the panic buying is bad when you witness an ambulance being turned away at the pump.

Worked at a petrol station the last time there was panic buying years ago and everywhere ran out. We let our tanks run down to the minimum they can safely pump then closed them off. We let emergency services take fuel from the last tank which we closed off to the public early.

Last one I remember was the early 2000s, my mum was a community nurse and got loads of gobshites berating her for filling up!
I was fit enough to cycle 6 miles to and from work so it didn't affect me too much.

RomeroGoon
Good on you. I find that cycling to work saves you having to do your daily exercise (if you're that way inclined) and makes you sleep a whole lot better that evening.
I genuinely think most people could easily do a six, eight, maybe even a ten mile cycle (not a doctor, take medical advice first if you're new to exercise!) - but it's just the "fuck factor" of having to get up that little bit earlier every day. On the days I cycle to work for a 6am start, it's a bit of a bastard waking up an hour earlier but it's nice getting to work, having a shower at the office, and turning up to my desk feeling fresh as fuck.
That said, it isn't for everyone. Well worth a try though.

SiFiNSFW
Can't speak about everywhere but ambulances and police have their own fueling stations they can use specifically for them that aren't open to the public, fuel would be prioritised going there rather than to a retail site.
The only reason they use retail stations is to prevent the need for them going back to a station repeatedly throughout the night when they can get petrol anywhere with a fuel card.
So there is a contingency in place, it's just not retail sites.

TheHighwayRatt
This used to be the case but over the last 10-20 years a lot (perhaps the majority) have been removed or are no longer used.

All day Friday it was on the radio, “fueling stations are closing and there’s a shortage” then right at the end of the day they’re like… why yall panic buying for

batchelorm77
I think the media are 100% to blame for this. 2 BP fueling stations could not get fuel so had to close for a day and the reporting of it caused this.

bacon_cakeDorset
It was amazing how quick the panic took hold. I drove to work at 7am on Friday morning and it was absolutely fine, I drove past three petrol stations and no queues at all. Then there was a report of the two BP petrol stations closed due to unrelated reasons. Then I happened to be out again at 3am this morning passing the same 24hr stations and they were all closed.

LucidTopiary
Good Morning Britain were reporting on 'potential' fuel shortages heavily on friday morning. By about 11am the Daily Mail had photos of small queues at petrol stations. I said at that point to my partner that you could see the panic buying being fuelled (if you'll excuse the pun). By the Evening petrol stations were selling out.
So fucking stupid and completely drummed up by the same right wing bellends that drove panic buying in the first pandemic.

goingnowherespecial
Small amount of petrol stations shut and it's front page news as a petrol shortage. Now we have idiots queuing at petrol stations. It's this years toilet paper shortage.

Machiavelcro
We had to fuel up for a trip this morning, unavoidable. We only managed to refuel on the 5th petrol station we tried and the lady there was putting cones in place behind us. This at 7:30 in the morning mind you, doubt they'll have any petrol for the rest of the weekend

00DEADBEEFThe United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland 65
Luckily people are much more limited in how much petrol they can stockpile compared to how much toilet roll they can stockpile.

Neat_Petite
Our politicians have told us there’s no fuel shortage, that there’s no need to panic, and we should all carry on with our lives as normal.
Panic buying starts almost immediately.
What does that tell us about how much we value the word of our government?

sweatymeatball
I actually think the british press have a lot to do with this issue myself. They have set up live news feeds and it's front page news. They like at the start of the pandemic have helped cause hysteria. Not saying the government aren't a bunch of untrustworthy cretins... but yeah...our press...fucking idiots really.

chippingtommy
the source of the issue is brexit, and our press had no small part in generating the bulshit about the EU which led lots of people to vote to leave... but yeah...our press...fucking idiots really.

sweatymeatball
I agree with that yeah. People need to give themselves a good shake and look at the reality of things since leaving the EU. This is what they voted for.

Neat_Petite
Totally agree. But if the media broadcast bollocks like this and the default response was “well, the government has said there’s no issue so it’s irrelevant”, then we’d not be here. Or it’s less likely we’d be here..
Fact is, when our government says not to worry about X, a lot of people assume there’s a reason to worry about X..

sweatymeatball
They would be better off saying nothing but then people would be like why haven't they said anything? I don't know what the right answer is if you were in power. I just know, the press....fucking unreal and they should literally be ashamed of the way they acted with this....this and panic buying at the start of covid.

Mont-ka
To be honest it's because when things are fine they don't tell us not to panic. So when they tell us not to panic we wonder why they are saying that.

felesrooLondon
I mean, if I came up to you at work and said, "Look, everything is fine. Just keep working and don't worry about what's going on outside. It's fine. Really. The most important thing you can do is to keep working as if nothing is going on outside because it's really nothing."
You'd fucking get up and see what was going on outside.

It's a bit like if I brought you a cup of tea and said 'the tea definitely does not have arsenic in it, trust me, it's safe to drink'. Humans interact with eachother with certain assumptions made subconsciously, and if you bring something up that is outside of these parameters, it gets us suspicious.

Don_Quixote81Manchester
Honestly, as soon as I hear words come out of Boris Johnson's mouth, I doubt the veracity of them. This is the price you pay for being such a shameless liar.
It hasn't helped that there have been so many news stories saying, 'there's no fuel crisis but people believe there is so they're panic buying which means there might be a fuel crisis, so you'd better panic buy too!'

doomdoggie
And now it's going to get worse and worse till the media stops reporting on it.
I'm supposed to be going to a family wedding tomorrow and I will definitely need petrol before I go. pumps were constantly busy or out of fuel.
I guess I'll have to wait and see if I can get any tomorrow.

LGH28
I literally tried getting petrol this morning early at around 6AM - all of petrol stations were either closed or disrupted with massive queues. This caused big arguments, people fighting for pumps (disgusting behaviour)
I've ordered a petrol cannister as my car is now on 1mph so no chance me driving to a station.
Going to have to walk a fill up if stations are running again - such dark times we are living in now ...sigh

Went to the 24hr servo last night. Not for fuel, I fancied some treats as it was Friday and that’s the only place open after 10pm.
Must have been over 50 cars come in, notice the yellow “out of order” signs on the pumps, and drive off all in the space of 10 mins.
Said to the bloke behind the counter that I felt for him, he told me how mental it’s been, they’ve even had to unplug the landline because of all the calls to see if they’ve got any fuel !

I didn't buy petrol yesterday, I bought half a tank last Thursday morning as usual.
That's my disclaimer out of the way, so my question is what else can folk do apart from compete in the panic?
People know if they don't then they run the risk of being without fuel when needed, and then having to search far and wide to find some.
I bet lots of people queued for petrol yesterday weren't rabid, selfish clowns but normal people trying NOT to be screwed by the rabid, selfish clowns. I know that adds to the problem, but the other choice is gamble and potentially lose.
I expect everything will be sorted by next week, but I can understand how rational, calm people try to protect themselves from frenzied panic buying by contributing to the hysteria.
The papers need to shut the fuck up and stop scaring folk.

thebuttonmonkey
My dad said to me today: ‘On our way to you we got caught in the awful traffic on the main road of people waiting to get into the garage! I had half a tank so don’t need to panic buy but filled up anyway as I’d been waiting there 20 minutes already…’
Errr… Dad…

Radioactivocalypse
Yep. As soon as there's a waft of panic buying, every reasonable person is now thinking, myself included, "oh crumbs, I'd better make sure I head to a petrol station soon just in case".
So maybe I'd wait until I'm almost empty, but instead I fill up when I'm 1/4 tank left. Everybody filling up that little bit earlier than they otherwise would is putting all the fuel purchasing that would have happened this week into the past few days.
Of course, in the next few days all the cars will be full with petrol and we'll be back to how we were because you can't just keep topping up without using more

DMMMOMKent
Where I live in Kent there isn't a station for 15 miles either way that isn't dry. It's fucked up so many people. I'm hearing of loved ones unable to get to dying relatives, people unable to get to work, wedding cars unable to make bookings for peoples special days, plans cancelled. I've seen ambulances and tankers in queues at petrol stations, it's just insane. What makes me really think though is what would happen in a real food shortage, this country would go to shit literally overnight. The Tory 'I'm alright Jack' has permeated the fabric of our once caring society.
Why are they not putting a limit on people buying fuel? Friday morning it was already carnage. I saw a guy in an Audi filling up 8 or more petrol cans at a forecourt, so fucked.

Hmm. So there was a slight issue with petrol supply to the stations, now there is none because people are idiots.
Whats the betting that half the people panic buying wont use that fuel in a few weeks? This happened last time, a neighbour with 2 cars, 1 not used for weeks at a time, filled both up, and both cars sat there.
I mean, one option is to drive a little less, but that might mean walking to the shop 100 yards away. The horror.
Just wait until a huge number of cars are electric. One slight mention of a capacity issue and boom, blackouts. I really feel like the media should not cover things like this, panic buying is absolutely guaranteed if they do.

Not sure if it's a human thing or a UK thing but there are so many people with the 'me first, I before all' mentality. People buying tons of toilet roll then trying to flog it on for a massive markup springs to mind

Keeping my fingers crossed this all blows over by the middle of next week as my other half has two hospital appointments and can’t drive at the moment. I currently have about 70 miles left in my tank, it’s about 10 miles each way so I’ll be scraping it if hasn’t.

Spent some time yesterday watching the chaos unfold. The station being very obvious closed and blocked by traffic cones yet drivers still queuing all the way up the road blocking buses. People using the exit as an entrance to avoid the queues/cones only to realise all the pumps are turned off. Drivers getting out of their cars to give each other and the workers grief. Eventually the police were sent out to move people on.

It's the media's fault. They shouldn't be allowed to report on things like this, they only make it worse.
