Moon cakes are the only sweet I make an exception for. I don’t eat the ones with egg yolk but love the ones with nuts. Recently I tried some cold mochi style ones from Hong Kong in different fruit flavours and they were exceptional. I wait till moon day is well over and go to Sydney to buy moon cakes at half price. Haven’t had a chance the last 3 years because of fires and the pandemic. Luckily I been gifted some by Chinese friends.

“ I don’t eat the ones with egg yolk but love the ones with nuts"
Me neither. I can't stand the yolks.
Unfortunately it turns out that in Chinese culture, giving a red bean paste mooncake that doesn't have yolk in it, as a gift is seen as being cheap, hence why no one really gifts those to others. (even though I would really enjoy them)
Plus, these days it's all those weird novelty mooncakes. Mooncakes that don't look like mooncakes. Durian flavour mooncakes. Cheesecake mooncakes. Lychee mooncakes.
Moon cakes with some kind of funky jelly skin. (Hate those)
No appreciation for the classics these days

Thanks God the trend is diversifying. I myself like egg yolk. Yes it was a culture thing to have eggyolk which started only in the late 19th century in Shanghai by a Cantonese person who lived in Shanghai.
Some indeed might deem the more eggyolk the more expensive and highee end. It is also because the yolk represents the moon. The moon represents my heart.
No, the second line is a joke, just a song by Teresa Teng :)

Aaahhh, my wife made this one too lately. Or to be more precise a whole stove full of these delicacies Definitively not a thing to lose weight.. But irresistibly tasty!

Im not Chinese, nor do I live in China but we got just 1 mooncake a few days ago and honestly, one of the BEST things I’ve ever had!!

Oh God! Those are sooooo good! My favorite is steamed custard bun though.

First of all, HongKongers are traditional and we give moon cakes as gifts because it’s the right and cultural thing to do.
Here in Hong Kong, we enjoy it more because we have a much wider variety of moon cakes, not only the traditional version.
Chocolate, strawberry, now durian as well as ice cream moon cakes.
We look forward to these new changes creations and concoctions as Hong Kong bakers are very creative.

Just like people giving out Christmas cakes and yulelogs when in reality no one eats them. Many rumours point out people recycle the stuff by giving them back to the original giver the next Christmas and the poor stuff gets recycled for God knows how many years.
But personally I do like mooncakes.

Amanda-Ryan S.
Those nut filled moon cakes are good, but I can eat only half as they usually get too sweet.

Tradition?
Anyway, I love mooncakes, especially those with egg yolks.
The Chinese people that I know in Canada do like them — they buy them for themselves too. However, unlike me who would eat one whole mooncake at once, they would only, each, eat a quarter.

Jeff Lee
RML.. the Material costs is actually very low if you make it yourself. I have made them together with a friend.
Specialty shops have it in Malaysia all year round. Night and day markets sells the cakes all year round in the form of cheap cakes. Basic ones at 1/4 of the price. Prices are jacked up 4 times during this festival only.
Have you tried the mint favour?
I just took a quarter pc.
Malaysia Muslims also take the “Halal" version.

R.M.L
There are the smaller, cheap, basic versions here in Canada all year round too, but they really don't taste as good as the expensive ones that they have out during the autumn festival.
No, I've never tasted the mint ones. I would not be interested in mint-flavoured pastry anyway.

Jeff Lee
Should try it. Put it in the fridge and take it a small piece. It's cool.. The expensive ones is with the salted duck egg York, imported direct from China..

Jeff Lee
Hi RML
Today Malaysian Chinese celebrate
The Mid Autumn Festival.
Happy celebrations to U & Family too.
I shall share with you electronically these mooncakes. Enjoy..!!

I love mooncakes too, but I get to eat it once a year only. My favorite is Lotus Paste, there are also exotic flavors available here like Durian, but I don’t like it. The egg yolk I don’t eat as it may be high in chloresterol, so I give to my dogs. Happy Mid-Autumn to you!

R.M.L.
Give the egg yolks to your dogs? Gee, save them for me! Canada now sells salted duck egg yolks alone (without the white).

The mooncake is not just a food during the Mid Autumn Festival (Sept 21). It's a profound cultural tradition entrenched in Chinese people's hearts, symbolizing a spiritual feeling.
This feel is evidently so among Chinese society, but the spirit of the festival may have been forgotten by some quarters especially in the diaspora countries of large ethnic Chinese population.
In ancient times, mooncakes were a kind of offering as a homage to the moon.

Over the centuries, these special cakes have become the most popular food of the Mid-Autumn Festival. The seasonal cakes are named after the moon goddess (Chang'e) - Chinese: 月饼 yuèbǐng /ywair-bing/ 'moon-cake(s)'

Granted, the popularity of the mostly sweet mooncakes has waned a little over the years in particular among the younger generation. However we need to look deeper than just the pastry itself.
Mooncakes symbolize family reunx and in Chinese culture, the roundness of the cake symbolizes completeness and togetherness - at a time when the full moon symbolizes prosperity and reunx for the whole family.
What's continued to be practiced enthusiastically today at Mid-Autumn Festival is that people eat mooncakes together with family, or present mooncakes to relatives or friends, to express love and best wishes, as well as sending the mooncakes as gifts to business counterparts.

Moon cakes are a festive food.
Most Americans don’t eat turkey dinner often, but most Americans eat turkey dinner on Thanksgiving.
Most Chinese people don't eat moon cakes often, but most Chinese people eat moon cakes on the Mid-Autumn Festival.
It's that simple.

Oh it is very popular which is why it is given as gifts.
My father, on top of his long work schedule, takes time after work to make his own moon cakes too for the whole extended family as gifts. And we also got requests from many restaurants for some and have subsequently made a couple thousand over 2 weeks.
If that's not popular I don't know what is as Chinese New year and mid autumn festival are amongst the most celebrated in China and even other South East Asian countries such as Vietnam and Thailand.

Moon cakes are traditional Chinese pastries and holiday foods.
Some people like it, some people don't.
There are cheap moon cake gift boxes and expensive moon cake gift boxes.
Moon cakes are not considered popular, but they are also considered popular foods. Moon cakes are an essential food for the Mid-Autumn Festival.

I am not a big fan of the mooncakes, and by mooncakes I mean the traditional ones with the well-known flavors and the typical shapes. And as a Chinese, I don’t think it’s a weird thing because I grew up hating it, so did a lot of my friends.
Despite the fact that traditional mooncakes have become less popular, the concept of “mooncake” or the word itself is still the icon of the Mid-Autumn Festival. As if without the mooncakes, the festival isn’t happening for real.
Moreover, there has been more and more thoughts put into making mooncakes—the flavor, the design of the the packaging box, and etc. And giving each other mooncakes as a gift for the Mid-Autumn Festival has been a social convention since long ago. So why not give out pretty gifts for both getting holiday vibes and sticking with the social convention?

Calvin Long
It's a tradition, and since the Chinese are a superstitious bunch, they will complain about the price, but will still buy it because that's what you do. Kind of like why people give gifts at Christmas when they really dont want to…

Anonymous
Because it’s popular. Not necessarily the most popular food here, but pretty popular enough to give it, packed in colorful gift boxes, to people we care about.

Jimmy Qu
Because Chinese Festival foods are only for celebrating festivals. they need to appear before festival coming.
Usually those food are hard to make, expensive, etc. So catering those food in normal days make no sense to Chinese people.

Mel Chen
How do you know Mooncake is not popular among Chinese?
Why has been lying to you?
Hey, a box of good mooncakes is more expensive than a good steak in the restaurant.
People just love it.
But like all food, taste is subjective. Some like it, some don’t.

David Pan
I challenge the claim that mooncakes are not popular. The Chinese I know all love having some with family and friends during the Mid-Autumn Festival. The matter of the expensive mooncakes being a gift item is another thing altogether.

Robert Lee
For the same reason fruitcake make the rounds over Christmas. I swear, there’s an unopened can of that crap floating around my extended family for seven years. It’s like a hot potato that gets thrown around. It’s what you give to people you don’t particularly like, but do so because it’s customary.
And no, there are no good fruitcakes. I don’t care if it came straight from the ovens of Biscottificio Innocenti in Rome, it’s still crap.

Eating moon cakes is a popular Chinese Moon Festival tradition. Moon cakes were originally used to worship the moon god. Later, people appreciate the moon while tasting the moon cakes on the Mid-Autumn Festival. Moon cakes symbolize the family reunx, and people regard it as a festival food, as well as a sacrifice to the moon and a festival gift to relatives and friends.
The full moon is the symbol of family reunxs in Chinese culture. It is said, sentimentally, that “the moon on the night of Mid-Autumn Festival is the brightest and the most beautiful”. Chinese people usually set a table outside their houses and sit together to admire the full moon while enjoying tasty mooncakes.
Among the marketing tactics used to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, mooncake gift boxes are the most common. However, making mooncakes with authentic flavors is not as easy as designing their boxes. As such, brands would maximize their interests by collaborating with homegrown Chinese consumer goods companies or local restaurants rather than making their own mooncakes.
Making and sharing mooncakes is one of the hallmark traditions of this festival. Thus, the sharing and eating of round mooncakes among family members during the week of the festival signifies the completeness and unity of families.

From the feedback I’ve received from SOME non-Asian Americans:
Mooncakes taste bland. Lotus seed paste tastes bland. They see the word “cake” and they expect something sweet, but for them, lotus seed paste, red bean paste, black bean paste - all these pastes taste bland to them. For them, it’s not sweet at all.
Texture - too dry. Both the baked type and the snowskin type appear to be too dry for their taste. It’s not moist and luscious, just very dry. The filling is dense, not light and fluffy. One doesn’t typically associate these textures with “cake”.
The fillings are too strange. Lotus Seed paste, red/black bean paste, the Five-Nut mix, jujube - they just don’t find the taste of these fillings that great. And salted egg yolk? Not fans of that either. They do actually seem more receptive to snow-skin mooncakes with ice-cream or chocolate fillings in them - just not the more traditional mooncakes.
Many Americans are conditioned to expect dairy ingredients when eating confections classified as “cakes” or “dessert”. By this I mean cream, butter, milk. This is why, generally, many non-Asian Americans rarely, if ever, crave Asian desserts - dairy ingredients are not present. Traditional mooncakes do not contain cream, butter, or milk. This is yet another reason why they are more receptive to snow-skin mooncakes with ice-cream or creamy chocolate filling.
So, conclusion?
Snow-skin mooncake with ice-cream or chocolate or some other very sweet filling might be a hit.
Traditional ones? Not so much.
The traditional ones are a step beyond what the average non-Asian American might feel comfortable eating.

Edwin Raynor
Over the years I have really tried to enjoy mooncakes. Tried hard.
Americans in general are very accepting of novel deserts, so I do not believe it's not because they're not sweet or not dairy.
Mooncakes like most Asian desserts look better than they taste. This leaves you disappointed.
They are extremely rich and extremely filling. With food that is as rich and as filling as mooncakes I expect to get more flavor out of them. It's not that they're bad because they lack flavor, it's that been so rich and in comparison have little flavor to other Rich items.
The texture is very dense. although there is nothing specifically good or bad about a dense dessert it is seen as a sign of poor quality in America.

Mauro Braunstein
If you buy it at a bakery, it’s really not expensive. I got one with lotus paste and two yolks for I think $5.50? But I like the yolks. There were some with red bean or mung bean or whatever, smaller size, etc. for $3. It’s expensive in the boxes, but at least here in Boston the bakeries sell them fairly cheap, year-round.

Yueming Li
Not all of the moon cakes are expensive in China. We often buy moon cakes from supermarket or morning fair on the catty, and one moon cake just costs about 0.2 dollar.I admit that we indeed have some whopping price one for gifts, with luxury packaging and beautiful shape, using chocolate or yolk or any other expensive fillings to instead of red beans. But as the government has limited excessive packaging ,I can't see those whopping price ones for a long time.

Eric Tun
That’s because it is sold as a novelty product for certain occasions in the Chinese Lunar calendar so it is marketed as a specialty item on those days. There are other products that are similar to mooncakes with similar fillings but a lot cheaper because they are marketed to be as culturally significant as the mooncake.
Just like the Christmas Fruitcake, which is probably pricey for the sizes that it’s marketed.
For myself I don’t really like mooncakes and would prefer the fruitcake. But if there is one part of the mooncake that I like it’s the pastry that covers the filling.
