What are the biggest culture shocks people face when coming to Germany?

A few years ago I took a trip to Germany, mainly to visit Oktoberfest and drink good German beer, but also to visit the city of Munich and drive a bit on the Autobahn.
We had planned a day in the English Garden in Munich. It is a large area of 4 square kilometers with huge meadows, lakes and beer gardens to spend a beautiful day.
Initially, it looked like a normal garden, with some people relaxing by the lake, some couples talking on the benches, some families having a picnic, and some just lying in the sun reading a book.
As I walked through a certain area, I suddenly started noticing a lot of people who were completely naked.
I have traveled extensively throughout Europe, but also Japan and the United States. I have no problem with nudity and I had previously found some nudist beaches in America or Spain. But the first few seconds of that experience can be considered a real shock, as nothing prepared me to expect nudity.
In a garden, in the middle of the city, in the middle of a working day

Photo taken from Immer weniger Nackte im Englischen Garten. In which, among other things, they complain that the number of naked people in the English Garden is decreasing, attributing the cause to tourists who, like me, remain perplexed ...

I’m probably going to sound very odd here, but I can assure you I’m not asexual. I don’t find complete nudity to be very attractive. I always like at least some clothing items on. This is in public yet. I’m not condemning their culture, but it’s not for everyone.

You're not alone. Most people don't find nudity attractive according to idk what research, but it happened.

No, why would anyone do either at a place like that?

I visited a friend in Bade, Germany, and went to a Sauna. You had to be totally naked (as per the rules) unless you had a *really good* reason to wear any swim wear - such as a bad disfigurement. Nobody batted an eyelid. Nobody cared. Nobody ogled or compared. Nobody was embarrassed or ashamed. It was liberating, coming from the UK where people are still, in general, quite prudish about nudity. There was just a feeling of a general concensus that human bodies come in all shapes and sizes - all different but also the same - nothing to be surprised about: Just get on with it!

NO.
Nobody cares.
Very refreshing.
In certain places in the Caribbean this laissez faire’ attitude can be seen as well.
Martinique is a place that comes to the fore in my mind when talking about this, altho honestly, mostly it is that way.
Nobody really gives a shit - no one gets bent out of shape. No one calls the cops. I doubt whether (aside from consensual) there is any sexual perversion going on.
Its just natural - IMO, its healthy, and in more ways than one - and as John Lennon said, nothing to get hung (no pun intended) about.

In the US, you’ll be called pervert and fined.
Other day I was reprimanded by my daughter’s daycare teacher. My daughter was wearing only underwear under her dress. I was told that in addition to her underwear she should were at least shorts. I was ready to ask if this Karachi or LA? And yes, I am in liberal California, in Alabama I probably would be going to jail.

Angry Chick
As a preschool teacher there is a good reason. It stops,or at least lessons, sand and dirt from getting in there. Not a place a female wants that. And yes young kids flip around, hang on bars, etc and show everything off

Yikes.
I have been to a couple places where you cannot bring anything else but a towel given by facility (hotel). Or at least, you are advised to, I am not sure weather anybody would actually forcefully stop you.
However, completly naked sound somewhat dirty. So you are placing your buttwhole somewhere where somebody else placed their naked buttwhole? In a Sauna where everybody is sweating and of which the whole point is to expel as much impurity from the body as possible.
I can understand not allowing costumes (since they can be dirty), however, a towel to make sure you are sitting somewhere clean should be at least offered.
If you then want to open the towel, let yourself free, that’s cool to me. However, I don’t want to sit butt naked in the same place where somebody else sat butt naked.

Melda Hope
I live in Prague, and naked saunas are also common here (that’s my name for them only). You strip in the changing rooms, often mixed-gender, but have a sheet and/or towel, usually provided by the sauna. You sit or lie on the sheet - you’ll get dirty looks and probably a comment if you’re touching the wood directly with any part of your body - and use it as cover if you want. A few people, mostly women, wrap it around themselves while walking around. Many people just drape it over a shoulder or an arm. Most people do something in between, or lie naked on it to cool down, but wrap to have a drink (yes, in some there’s a bar, and yes people are nude there, too).
It can be a social thing. Groups of friends go together. My husband has been with a female friend. It’s… just not a big deal. It’s not sexual.

Those nude people are actually paid by the government to be there as proof, mainly towards visitors from other German Federal states, that Bavarians are humans too. The rivalry with the “Prussians" from further north had lead to them questioning that status on the evolution line.

Also not too unheard of in parts of France (especially the coastal south), Italy, Romania, and Brazil (and im sure other South American countries too).
A friend of mine who did a work/study thing in Germany a few years ago was invited by a group of people around his age (mid to late 20s, guys and girls) to a Sunday picnic about 30 miles south of Munich by a private farm that had a good sized lake…. After lunch and a decent amount of social drinking, nearly all of them (again guys and girls mixed) took off their clothes and swam naked in the lake. It was something they just did occasionally.
As one of them put it “Private parts all look the same, why be embarrassed?”

Khengchat Ng
As a tourist guide said when escorting us to a communal bath in Japan, “ If you are prudish, ask for a fig leaf from the counter.”
“ To cover the private part? ” We innocently asked.
“ No, to cover your eyes, “ she intoned.

Tyler Victor
lol yeah that’s basically the attitude in such cultures, “If it offends you, close your eyes!” Which makes sense, there is a big difference between nudity energy and sexually explicit energy.
I hear the Norwegian and Swedish culture are even more relaxed about such things.

Dar Milli
This is understandable. They are people without melanin and without sunshine for most of the time. They need the suntan, and what better way to get it other than directly from the Sun.
Why deprive other parts of the body of the Sun rays by covering them?
These are white problems. You won’t find this in the tropics of course, where we have the Sun all the time.

George Harrison
Alas the shortage of melanin in some people’s skin drive them to desperate measures to get some color to their skin. Tan lines are just too ugly for some. Besides it is just our Puritanical roots, that makes us American tourists especially prudish.

Gregory Zannatos
Those nude people in this picture are much better looking to what you'd normally end up having to witness… imagine… 70 or 80 something overweight naked people and you get the idea

Tim Gibson
When you take note of the percentage of overweight/obese people in the US, the illegality of public nudity is quite an eye-saver…

When I was twelve my parents took my sister and I to Germany to see my mothers “people” (my mother is German by birth). When we were there my uncle (moms older brother) took us all to a nearby lake. All my girl cousins went topless, from 8 to 18, and didn’t think twice about it. I was already accustomed to it in the back yard, but it was still a shock to do it in public. There were other people around doing essentially the same thing, there might have been 50 families in that park that day with a hundred young girls from 4 to 20 running around topless, and no one cared, brothers, dads, moms, they didn’t give it a second thought. My cousins male friends came over and talked to them, and the girls didn’t so much as flinch, didn’t cover up, just stood there and talked as if they were fully clothed.

My very first shock was when I took off from this view in Lahore 4 years ago

The next culture shock was in the first 5 minutes I stepped on German land.
Germans are nice people but have a horrible sense of humor
After a 13h journey from Lahore to Germany (also my first time on an airplane), I was encountered by a very German immigration officer. After I hesitantly pushed over my green passport with a student visa I was told to stand by until they let everyone else out of the airport. He then called me over and asked me:
“Are you a man?”
I looked down between my legs and answered in a very uncertain voice - “Yes”
“It says on your visa that you’re a female so we can’t let you in the country” - he said with a serious face.
Totally blank, I replied: “I…. umm..”
“Ha. Ha. Ha. Just joking, das ist no problem, please fix it by going to the immigration office within the next weeks”
“Oh and welcome to Germany” - with a grin on his face.

Public Transport is your go-to means of traveling
A journey from the airport to the central station took a connection via a bus and a tram. Neither of the two modes of public transport was jam-packed as you would find in Pakistan.
Bicycles are a must-have
If you’re German and you don’t have a bicycle, it’s like being South Asian and not having brown skin - very rare. Bicycles are used by everyone for everything - getting to work, getting to school, groceries, etc. I was even surprised to see 60 year-old people riding bicycles.
Most central stations in Germany will have an aura of pee around them
The moment you get off a bus or a tram close to a huge station, you will be greeted by a repulsive scent of piss and beer (often mixed) mainly because a lot of homeless people are taking shelter close to these areas.

Drinkable Tap water
This one is a complete game-changer. After a 30 min train ride from my central station to the university carrying bags, I was exhausted and extremely thirsty. I looked for a water dispenser in my student dormitory and found nothing. I gave up and just filled up some water from the bathroom tap.
After chugging it, I did some research and it turns out that Germany’s tap water is of super high quality and is totally safe to drink. Money saved
Cities are closed on Sundays
Do you want to go shopping? Are out of eggs & milk for tomorrow?
Sorry about that, you’ve got to wait. Supermarkets and all stores are closed on Sundays. I had to make sure and really validate this around with people because I absolutely couldn’t believe it.
However, if you fancy a beer or some coffee & cake, places are open.

People obey traffic laws
No matter how expensive a car a person is driving - If you’re a pedestrian or riding a bicycle, you are always the priority. Completely shocking since I came from a country where the bigger your car, the more rights you get on the road.
Also, there happens to be a pedestrian traffic signal that people respect and follow.
Electricity doesn’t go out
No, I'm not from a tiny village where you get electricity 1 hour a day but I've had days in Pakistan where there was no electricity from 7 am - 3 pm. It’s been 1453 days since I have been in Germany and not for a single second I’ve experienced an electricity outage. Mind BLOWING!

Penis sightseeing
This is a recent shock since I moved to Berlin about a year ago.
If you’re out on a beach to enjoy some views of the water and get some sun, there’s a high chance there’s either going to be a penis or a pair of breasts obstructing your view. You can’t avoid it, you will look at it and you will accept it. Then it’s not going to be shocking anymore.
Dogs, Dogs, and more Dogs
This is getting interesting. I’ve had a lifelong fear of dogs, and to see almost every household have a dog in Germany was far from ideal. It is what it is, Germans love their dogs, they are trained and if they bite you, you are entitled to financial remuneration. So there’s no downside for me at least, I’m up for getting bitten.

Getting used to Sirens
If you’re in a big city, there’s either an ambulance or a police siren you ought to hear every day. In a small city, this could be less.
No Ceiling fans
I couldn’t sleep without one. I needed the sound of a fan to put me to sleep. I arrived in August and the very first nights were dreadful - it was absolutely silent and there was no airflow. Being brown, I purchased a portable fan directed straight to my face to resort to a good night’s sleep.
Racism
People are assholes everywhere - I’ve met some extremely nice people during my time here but I've also been called a “braunes Stück Scheiße” (a brown piece of shit) by drunk white people.
However, this is more true for smaller towns than for bigger cities. For instance, berlin is super open and friendly when it comes to this sort of stuff.
Friendly police
Being any color other than white, this really comes in handy. The police get paid fairly in Germany and are not assholes as you would find them to be in most parts of the world.
Earnings are substantial as compared to South Asia
What I was earning with my part-time job as a bachelor’s student in Germany was more than what my brother was earning as a tech graduate in Pakistan.

Quality of Life
There’s no one yelling at you to bring groceries from the shop down the street. You’re not hearing cars honking in the morning amidst rickshaw noises because everyone’s late to work. You don’t see smoke coming out of car exhausts because no one has maintained their cars.
Life is calm and systemized. You have time for yourself and have lots of time to learn from the surroundings and incorporate that into your life.
There’s mandatory state health Insurance and it is good
The concept of health insurance was only introduced when I landed in Germany. Prior to that, I was oblivious to the concept of insurance because we never had any. Your life is so much simpler and happier when you have good health insurance.

Coffee and Alcohol are in abundance
You start your day with a fresh brew and end it with getting smashed at any of the endless clubs in Germany (only on the weekends).
If you’re in Berlin, this experience goes to a new level with the amazing cafe’s and the oh so notorious clubs.
There’s so much more that I can write but this is the top of the list!

Henry Su
I have a weird thing where when I travel somewhere, and the locals tell the tap water’s potable, I mostly drink nothing but the tap water. For me, potable tap water suggest a well functioning infrastructure, and great tasting tap water, suggests that the ground water is clean and that the people have a care for their country. Drinking it adds a more intimate dimension to my travels. Some places have delicious tap water. By far, the ski areas around Nagano and Hokkaido in Japan have the tastiest water - almost biscuity and sweet. Denmark and Fiji also have great tasting water. Looking forward to try German water.
