UK public now eating significantly less meat

I have switched to less meals with meat in them as a core ingredient, but I have no intention to check if any of the ingredients are actually vegetarian.

Mr_Leek
That’s been my recent philosophy - try to reduce the “meat with something” meals. Latest one has been a mushroom burger (portobello mushrooms are a recent discovery for me).
Not sure I’ll ever end up full vegetarian, but even being “half veggie” will make a big difference.

I went vegetarian last year, to resolve the cognitive dissonance of feeling appalled at animal cruelty in general but ignoring the cruelty imposed on animals in the food industry.
I'd been working up to it for a while before I had the epiphany that these cruelties are the same, by doing the same as you mention, for health reasons. Having a nice range of meat-free meals already to hand made going full vegetarian really easy.

This is me! Now eat meat probably 40% of meals, and beef <5%.
Not only is it cheaper and better for the environment, but also makes those rare beef meals feel much more of a treat.

leepox
Yep I only eat beef at restaurants for good steak.

I'm exactly the same as you.
A high percentage of my meals are now vegetarian and I feel better for it.
I will never say I'm a vegetarian and because I've reduced my meat intake, I will now only buy locally sourced / high quality butchers’ meat. It makes it feel eating meat more of a treat, opposed to just a daily thing

Same! I tend to go for weeks without any meat at all, just veggies and occasionally some fish/seafood. But then I'll be on holidays, or have a random craving for steak or bacon or sausages, and that's ok. Whilst in theory going full veggie would be good and all, I like to try out lots of different kinds of foods, meat being just one amongst many different options. Oh and anyone who thinks veg-only meals are boring has clearly not discovered the right ones for them yet. :)

Got any meals to recommend?

What do you eat if not beef? Beef and Lamb are my go-to meats because I know that in the UK ruminants live very good lives compared to other livestock and compared to other nations; in fact the British Isles are extremely well suited to rearing these sorts of animals.
Chicken and pork are the meats I slightly shy away from (albeit I don't take much persuasion) because even the higher welfare varieties (ie "Free range") don't really guarantee they have a life anywhere near as good as a cow or a sheep; they're treat much more like living-products than as animal who we will eventually eat.
Also I strongly recommend if you are not against paying more, to also go to your local butcher. Not only will you be buying a higher grade of product you'll also be supporting your local area and supporting people doing skilled work rather than supporting people trained to put plastic wrapped plastic trays of meat on a shelf.

I agree with vegans entirely but personally don't have the willpower to give it up. However, all y day-to-day cooking is now vegan. I cook usually 3 different vegan meals a month in huge quantity, portion them out into tupperwares, then freeze them. Currently I have about 24 frozen meals; I have the option of vegan bolognese, vegan sweet chilli stir fry or a vegan korma. The only time I end up eating meat is If I eat out or get a takeaway. (or occasionally when I get really baked and decide to get a pizza from the supermarket). I've probably reduced my meat consumption by about 70% over the last few years

I really feel like there isnt a decent movement promoting just eating less meat. I totally get why many people are pushing vegetarianism or veganism, I fully support the movements as its one of the best ways to slow the destruction of the planet.
But I feel like getting more people onboard will start with getting people people to just simply eat a few more meals that dont include meat, its crazy how many people will have meat everyday in both their lunch and dinner. I think there is a huge number of people who just simply reject vegetarianism as they feel like its an attack on their way of life of some shit so perhaps getting them to think about just simply having a few meals a week that dont include meat is a step towards a solution.

Some schools try things like 1 day/week without meat but the parents go absolutely mental over the idea of just no meat at lunchtime once a week.

RhegedHerdwick
I wonder if part of the issue is the schools explicitly saying that they're doing 'meat-free Mondays'. I suspect that quietly changing the menu would be a lot easier.

omegaonionIn memory of Clegg
Probably but the idea is more to show the kids that you can have good food without meat. If you don't tell them the message then it's not quite as good. Honestly 1 meal in the week without meat should be acceptable to anyone but apparently it infringes on their rights.

RhegedHerdwick
I would respectfully disagree. I would say that the school has the rare opportunity to actually accustom children to eating less meat. There are many opportunities for public and private organisations to make an overt point about eating less meat, but I think that actually getting people used to eating less meat in a formative period in their lives is far more useful. The children will still know that they are eating meals without meat, so I don't think that there's any need to risk a backlash from parents.

I’m ethically opposed to the meat industry, but at the same time, I’m glad people are at least cutting back. I appreciate not everyone thinks killing animals is wrong, but at least they’re recognising the environmental impact and trying to mitigate.

Honey-BadgerCentralist Southerner
Yeah i think the environmental impact gets people more because it can affect them, killing animals doesn't.
What is kinda odd though people will be really upset about destroying natural habitats and harming wild animals who are just trying to live, but wont bat an eyelid to raising animals for slaughter

It’s like teaching abstinence to stop teen pregnancy. It’s stupid. People like meat, they’re not going to give it up completely just because you told them it’s bad.
Telling them to eat less though? That’ll work.
My wife turned veggie and my meat consumption plummeted. I don’t miss it but I could never live without it completely. When we cook at home it’s mostly veggie and sometimes I’ll add meat to mine. When we order pizza or take away I always order meat though.
Edit - when I said ‘you’, I didn’t mean the person I was responding to. Just ‘you’ in general.

twistedLucidity
Good news, more for me!
Kidding. Our meat consumption has crashed as well. A combination of cost and an understanding of how bad it is for the environment, along with welfare standards.

beleaguered_penguin
Ours has crashed because of the actual quality of the meat on offer. It's all turned to utter shite this last year. Can get some nice stuff from butchers still but it's very very expensive.

Hungry_Horacecreamyjoshy_is_evil
Similar here - we eat maybe 70% vegetarian now. Less meat, but bought from a local butcher that only stocks from within the county so it's much nicer and less food miles.
It's taken a lot of experimentation to find nice all-veg recipes though, the traditional British nut roast and all those bollocks doesn't cut it. Luckily the Indian subcontinent has been making amazing veg curries for centuries so we mainly eat curries and bean stews.

Enjoying reading this thread while eating a delicious aloo and home made naan bread. Honestly could probably go full veggie if I could convince the wife to eat indian food with me everyday.

We cut out meat and fish in the house. The kids have what they want at school and we said we would be allowed meat or fish when we go out for dinner.
I have probably only eaten meat 2 or 3 times in the last 6 months. I don't crave or miss meat and I feel so much better, probably lost a bit of weight and it is honestly quite a good feeling.
Drastically cutting down or cutting out meat is probably the single best thing most people can do in terms of their environmental footprint.

A couple of years ago I cut out alcohol & four years ag, meat. I genuinely feel better all around, for a while I missed alcohol, but I don't anymore - I do however feel significantly healthier and happier basically all the time.
Cutting meat out entirely was so easy and is getting easier and easier considering a lot of meat "substitutes" are better than I remember meat tasting these days. The days of Quorn being the best a no-meat world has to offer are well and truly over.

We've been eating less meat recently, for a combination of health and environmental reasons, and I'm very much enjoying it so far.
I'm making more varied and interesting meals, I feel healthier, and when I do eat meat I enjoy it more now that its not just the default 7 days a week. Plus it turns out tofu is really really good.
I'm not sure I could have done it pre-pandemic though, one of the few upsides of being trapped at home is I'm a much better cook now, so its more possible to make interesting meals without meat!

I was a vegetarian for the majority of my life and maintained it very easily where I had lived but when I moved to the UK years ago I had to switch to an omnivorous diet as there just wasn't any vegetarian food to buy unless you absolutely love cooking from scratch or Quorn. I hate Quorn with a fiery passion and I'm time poor.
I have to say I am pleasantly surprised at the sudden boom in vegetarian mainstream options that have happened recently and seemingly out of nowhere. It's so nice to have these options again, as I still prefer not eating meat if given the choice. I just legitimately dislike real meat.

I've found even the supermarket brand fauxmeats are rapidly gaining on the premium brands in terms of mouth feel and flavour. In some cases, I'm finding the veggie option to be superior to the meat one - like jerky, where the veggie option made of what I assume is pulled dried soya-seitan has a mouth feel and fibrousness easily equal to meat but no prospect of chunks of gristle.
Another thing that really reduced my meat consumption was a period of those posh meal boxes during lockdown - most of the recipes stay within budget by providing 250g of meat for 2 people, which is way less than I would have previously used when cooking myself. A tub of mince that would previously have been 4 portions became 6 or even 8.

It's not as simple as meat bad for the environment and crops good. It is the way the meat is reared, rotational use of land that includes beef production is good and Large-scale intensive single crop production can be very bad.

One of their requirements was that we labels cannot show that meat-looking garbage comes from the US.

It's not as simple as meat bad for the environment and crops good.
It kind of is. Meat is by necessity always going to be less efficient because you lose so much energy in conversion. Animal products are useful for converting inedible resources into edible resources (like grass), and historically that has been very important locally, but we could still feed the whole world using way less land, water, pesticides, antibiotics, and with fewer emissions without including any animal agriculture and taking into account transport costs. Even the 'worst' offending plant based options, shipped half way across a continent, are better than animal products for the environment.
It's definitely possible to balance things so that animal agriculture is sustainable, but it will necessarily have to make up less as a percentage of global agriculture to do so.

AnalThermometer
I wouldn't be surprised if this causes new health problems down the road with zinc, protein, iron and b12 deficiencies. You can replace the large amount of vitamins and minerals found in meat with others sources, but not often at the same price and you need quite a varied diet to do it. Fake meat you find in supermarkets is also highly processed like any other junk food, and eating a truly balanced plant based diet is a lot more effort than buying fake sausage rolls

I think most people would be healthier eating no meat than the amount they do at the moment. Health-wise, a small amount of meat is probably optimal. People don’t tend to die from deficiencies, they die from heart disease, which large amounts of (particularly red, processed) meat are not ideal for.
