For economic and historical reasons, for centuries the Japanese did not have the money to have a private bath in their home. They therefore had to go swimming together.You enter, you pay. We give you a key and we assign you a cabin.

These baths were traditionally unisex and were an important social gathering place in Japanese communities for hundreds of years. As western sensibilities became common in Japan, walls sprang up to create male and female sides. Newer structures were purpose built with 2 sides, but there are still a few public baths that have common pools.

I take this picture very offensive, as a Japanese women. Someone at Japan Quora shared this answer somehow, so I happened to notice the photo.

Seen this in movies set in Japan (and some other countries) where these baths are used for chilling and socialising/relaxing. The idea sounds great and it must be amazing to feel so relaxed with friends you can all sit in a bath together. I’m guessing though you really need to have been brought up with that, I’m not sure at all I’d feel comfortable with it. Nah, think we British will stick to going off to the pub after work

In the Netherlands it is normal for people of all age and sex to be naked in a sauna facility which is not all that different from a bath house in Japan. And public nudity is quite common in Germany.
Despite this, I have no idea why only it seems that Japan is the subject of intrusive discussion and ridicule while those two European countries are not.

When I went to Japan last time I know that the hotels had separate place for man and woman.
I honestly admit that I don’t know how I can stand not to have a boner if the bath is a mix one and for that one sole reason that I prefer not to get in a mix one cause I don’t want to offend anyone or having to deal with the law :D

Before Spanish arrived here in the Philippines, some of the women in our tribes do not have cover on the upper part of their body with their breasts gracefully shown. I went to my first Korean spa when I was 16 and felt so “shy” and “embarrassed” to be so revealed but it became so comfortable SO fast because a lot of other cultures just don’t care. I truly understood that western culture put that sense of “shame” on us at that point.

Let everyone live according to their culture. Imposing our views and stating them to be will of God by whatever name he is called is arrogance. I am sure if god is all powerful he can impose his will on his own and doesn’t need half witted agents.
