Stories about the "super cold" have dominated British media in recent weeks and there have been tens of thousands of internet searches for "worst cold ever".

Many have taken to Twitter, Facebook and TikTok to complain that they're unable to shake the bug.

Reported symptoms include "sandpaper throat", head and body aches, runny nose and fatigue, sometimes lasting weeks.

"Day eight I think of super cold. Losing track of time. Grim as hell," CNN producer Luke McGee wrote on Twitter.

Benjamin Butterworth from The i newspaper said, "Every bit of my body aches. Feel like I've run a marathon just from being awake. Seems 'the worst cold ever' might have got me."

While the symptoms overlap with Covid-19, "super cold" sufferers report testing negative for the virus.

Nearly 68 per cent of people in the UK are fully vaccinated against Covid-19, and the country has started offering booster shots ahead of winter.

According to the UK's ZOE Covid Symptom Study, there has been increasing crossover in symptoms between Covid-19 and the cold.

At the beginning of the pandemic, the main distinguishing Covid-19 symptoms were thought to be fever, cough and loss of smell.

Millions of reports to the ZOE Covid Study app have since identified more than 20 symptoms of Covid-19, including headache, runny nose, sneezing and sore throat.

"Over the past 18 months the pattern of symptoms has changed as the virus has evolved and more people have been vaccinated," the website says.

"Many of the symptoms of Covid-19 are now the same as a regular cold, especially for people who have received two doses of the vaccine, making it hard to tell the difference."

The health science company says loss of smell or loss of taste are still the most important predictors of testing positive for Covid-19 rather than a regular cold.

"So it's an important symptom to look out for, whether you've been vaccinated or not," the website says.

Brits have also been warned to be alx for the signs that the super cold has developed into deadly pneumonia.

The Times reported earlier this month there had been an uptick in calls to GPs and the National Health Service's 111 hotline about autumn colds and flu.

The calls mainly related to difficulty breathing, particularly in patients aged 15 to 44.

Experts have said it's likely due to weakened immune systems after nearly two years of lockdowns and social distancing.

"It could well be that now common colds are resurging, because of the decline in social distancing and mask-wearing, that they are bouncing back and the respiratory tract has not had enough recent experience of respiratory infections to be able to mount that strong first-line defence," Professor Peter Openshaw from Imperial College London told The Guardian last month.

While the focus for the past 18 months has been on Covid-19, colds and flu have also been stopped in their tracks.

Now that people are socialising again and catching public transport, non-Covid respiratory illnesses are on the rise again.

"We've actually been seeing a rise in the number of coughs and colds and viral infections," London-based GP Dr Philippa Kaye told the BBC.

"We are mixing in a way that we haven't been mixing over the past 18 months. During those first lockdowns, we saw numbers of other [non-Covid] infections fall. We think that that was primarily due to the restrictions on meeting up."

Writing for The Sun, Dr Kaye said there was simply more virus circulating in the community this year.

She suggested people might be catching multiple bugs, resulting in prolonged illness.

"This year is like every single year, there is never just one cold, cough or virus doing the rounds," she wrote.

"So if you feel like you've had a cold and are only better for a day or two before feeling ill again, you may have been hit by successive bugs."

In July, The New York Times reported on a similar phenomenon in the US, which experienced a particularly bad summer cold season as pandemic restrictions eased.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a common illness that is particularly dangerous to infants, has also re-emerged with a vengeance after lockdowns.

RSV cases have surged in Australia, New Zealand, Europe and South Africa.

"RSV and influenza cases dropped dramatically and remained very low throughout winter," the RACGP wrote in May.

Cases remained low until late spring, when a large surge was observed in NSW and Western Australia.

"The speed and magnitude of this increase was greater than the usual winter peak of RSV," the RACGP said.

"More recently, other states including Victoria and Queensland have seen a similar unseasonal rise in RSV cases. It's likely reductions in Covid-19 restrictions have opened the door for increased RSV spread."

The worst thing is that you just can't seem to shake it off. I've had a sore throat and a cough for weeks now. Every lateral and PCR test is negative.

spong_miester
Same thing for me, coughing and zero energy worse thing is the lack of sleep from the constant coughing. PCR tests all come back negative. Took me just over a week to feel like I can function at work

Could be another epidemic of something else. We have outbreaks all the time all over the world but largely fail to track them and most aren't contagious enough to spread everywhere. Still this one seems pretty contagious, it's probably a variant one of the other human coronaviruses given its symptoms.

WolfyCatYorkshire
I had the same for 2 weeks. It was so bad I called 111 and asked for some help because I had initially a sore throat, lost my voice, had flu like symptoms (aches, shivers, fever, blocked sinus, and then I must have got some sort of stomach bug because I was throwng up every hour into the early hours of the morning.
The flu and stomach symptoms left but I've still got itchy/sore throat, ~20% of my voice is still missing and the occasional chesty cough.
PCR came back negative.

The undetectable variant?

FirePhantomScotland
No, it’s because for almost 2 years we’ve been distanced and masked, so our immune systems haven’t been constantly exposed to the non-novel circulating viruses as they usually are, so they’re not as ‘at the ready’.

ings0c
That’s incorrect, it’s a fairly common misunderstanding about how the immune system works.
See
Coming into contact with germs spurs an immune response, but it doesn’t do anything to make your immune system stronger. And this current period of contact with fewer germs does nothing to weaken the immune response you will be able to mount, as needed, in the future.

My daughter has a health condition that means colds mean we end up in hospital.
They tested and she has a very aggressive adeno virus and OC43 a coronavirus from a pandemic in 1890 both of which are now "common cold"
So there are multiple "colds" going round my nephew had a bad rhinovirus caused bronchitis

In the last 5 weeks I had:
A sore throat, fever for a day and a nasty cough and cold symptoms for a week - got better, negative for Covid
A sore throat, fever for 2 days and an awful phlegmy cough to the point of nosebleeds for 1.5 weeks, got better, negative for Covid
Fever for a day that turned into wheezing and tight feeling lungs - tested positive for Covid.
I’m thankful I work from home because I’ve been sick for a total of 5 weeks almost with just a few days in between well.

I got a sore throat last night and it hasn't gotten better.

I had a mild sore throat one day.
By the end of the next day I was wishing for death because it would have been less painful.
Took me two weeks to feel human again.
The first week was by far the worst though.
Just at the end of week 3 now, and I'm about 90% recovered.

Lazy-Log-3659
I had a cold last week, which took a bit longer than usual to clear up but was mostly just sinus pressure and a cough which went after 2/3 days.
A day or two ago, I've managed to get a sore throat and I don't think I've ever had such an annoying sore throat. Those lozenges do nothing, and it's painful to swallow, especially at night. No other symptoms though.
Feel achy and I have a headache today, but I had a flu jab yesterday so I'm guessing it's that rather than this cold getting worse.

biscuitboy89
Not having been exposed to a cold virus for such a long time seems like it would be a good explanation as to why people are suffering so badly (but don't take that at face value, I'm not a healthcare professional).
If that is the case then I hope certain people become more empathetic to people with existing health conditions and those that immuno compromised or suppressed. For years now I've been suceptible to colds and really suffered because of my auto-immune conditions and medications prescribed for those.
All my previous bosses (bar one) have given me a hard time for 'always being 'sick''.

absolutelysureithink
Chances are it's actually multiple viral infections, not just one mega cold. I've had it for over a week now, it's horrible. I caught it from my 15 month old, who brought it home from nursery. It impacted him so badly, I'm typing sat next to a cot in the hospital - his virology report was 4 separate viruses, and something that had turned bacterial on his lungs. (He's ok, hopefully home tomorrow).
The nurses are saying they're seeing a lot more non-covid patients at the moment with horrible chest problems, especially small children.
Keep up the face masks and hand washing while out and about!

GhostRiders
Look, people need to stop with the wearing of masks and Social distancing has weakened our immune system bollocks, because its just that, bollocks.
Your immune system does not work in that way.
Unless you have a rare Primary Immune Deficiency condition like me or similar then your memory B cells do not forget.
What is happening here is due to everyone keeping their distance, wearing masks and actually caring about their personal hygiene, the lesser virus's haven't been able to circulate so freely like they would normally.
So what we have left are the more virulent forms hence why they are having more of an effect.

Had this I think.
Felt like death for two weeks, felt betterish for a week then it hit again last weekend and I felt dreadful, nose running constantly, coughing every time I laid down/night time, which'd stop until I tried to sleep.
Was the worst cold I've ever had, still not a 100% a month later.

PCwhale
Me and my partner got the cold 3 weeks ago ( both mid 20s and fairly healthy). Can't say we got hit super hard but it did take a good week for most of the coughing, sore throat and fever to go. Still have a little cough but nothing too bothersome. We haven't been ill in 3 years so since day one we expected it was gonna be a rough flu season.

lilabelo
It is absolutely the worst cold I’ve ever had! The funny thing is this cold likes to keep it interesting so it gives you a new symptom every two days or so. For me it started with a horrible sore throat, could barely speak. The a little bit of fever the next day and the following day the horrible cough started. Then the runny nose and sneezing and itchy tonsils and ears. Can barely catch my breath between blowing my nose and coughing and all lol. But the symptom I hate the most is the fatigue! Currently on day 9, hopefully I feel better soon

Lash-LaRue5678
Yes! Came here to see if others had the same these are exactly my symptoms- I've had it since the end of September and still don't feel right sadly. The nurse said it was recurring so there's a chance it can go and come back again hope you are feeling better soon though!

Pretty sure I had this and it’s a nasty one. I’m relatively young (27) and pretty healthy/fit, and it still completely wiped me out. The most ill I’ve felt in a long time

I can’t compare to Covid as, touch wood, I’ve not yet had it, but this super cold took me fully out for two days.
The fever, headache and exhaustion is the worst I’ve experienced in a very long time. With usual colds, I’d just get on with it but I couldn’t do anything except lay on the sofa or in my bed.

concretepigeonWakefield
I had a cold at the start of 2020, which was the illest I can ever remember feeling. It only really lasted two days then I felt basically alright.
In terms of intensity it was way worse than Covid (albeit with one jab), but I recovered far quicker.

Necto_gck
This cold is worst than the symptoms I had with Covid, I was double jabbed so I only have a loss of smell for a couple of weeks, but this cold knocked me out for a couple of days and now 3 weeks later can't shake a cough.

Wearing a mask during cold and flu season has been a thing in many (mostly Asian) parts of the world long before covid.
Makes sense to wear one to protect oneself from catching stuff.

AdwokatDiabel
They don't wear masks to protect themselves from catching it, but to avoid spreading it. It's also for social signaling to give people an indication that you are unwell and to stay away.
When everyone wears a mask, the latter is lost.

Freeewheeler
Our immune systems have evolved over millennia to be regularly challenged by viruses. Really not a good idea to try to break that connection. Maybe people are having such bad colds because they haven't had one for so long due to covid isolation and masks.

This is wrong, it’s not like we have landed from Mars or are an undiscovered tribe that need protection from germs. A year and a half is not long enough for your body to forget how to deal with a cold.

Shall we do a lockdown then?
Or just deal with it like humanity has always done?
