Thomas Snerdley, No one is promised tomorrow. TODAY is the day.
Here is 44 years of travel advice from a military brat and a military veteran who's been around the world a time or three.
Travel bag [1]: High quality 25 to 40 liter travel pack with (preferably fold-away) hip belt. Clothes, electronics, toiletries, gifts. Liquids/gels in a quart Ziploc by itself for easy inspection removal. My clothes are rolled up into an Eagle Creek [1a] with a plastic divider in the middle to separate the clean from the unwashed (isolating the smell away from the clean clothes and the rest of the bag) without having to pack two separate clothes bags ... ! Always leave the travel bag at least 1/3 empty for souvenirs, and to leave room to carry:
Purse/man-bag or hiking waist-pack [2]. Everything you will need to survive up to 18 hours in your airplane, train, boat, bus. (e.g., iPad, smartphone, snacks, eyeshade, earplugs, wet wipes, water bottle, etc) You never have to touch your main travel bag after putting it in the overhead bin (on the opposite side of the aisle, so you can keep eyes on it without having to crane your neck).

Going through Security: Put the small bag inside the big bag. Put everything except your picture ID and boarding pass into one of the big bag's zippered pockets and secure it with a heavy duty twist-tie . Since your Ziploc bag with liquids/gels is in its own pocket (right?) you won't accidentally lose anything taking it out for inspection. After clearing security, it'll take 30 seconds to put the Ziploc bag back in, your shoes back on and be on your way. Walk until you find a nice quiet area of the airport away from potential pickpockets to put everything back in your pants pockets. Walk by the folks paying $4.50 for a small bottle of water and, fill your empty water bottle from a drinking fountain. (Not sure if the water in that country is safe to drink? Use the Center for Disease Control's guidelines for healthy travel water:

How do I know what to bring? As you pack your bags, make a text list on your smartphone of everything you pack. On your trip, once in a while when you're bored waiting for a bus or plane go through the list and put a + next to everything you actually used. Next time you travel, don't pack anything without a + next to it. Even after all these years my travel pack gets a little lighter every time I travel. That's important because if it's too early to check in to a hotel, I can actually walk around town all day with my light pack (with at least 75% of the weight resting on the hip belt, not the shoulder straps!) unlike "overpackers".

How do I wash my clothes, for free? In the shower with hotel soap and/or shampoo, while you're still wearing them. That's why world travelers swear by quick-dry Marmot, Icebreaker and Ex-Officio clothing. Start with t-shirt, socks, shorts, undies, then yourself. After your shower, first wring them out as dry as you can without overly stressing the fabric. Then, lay a hotel towel out on the bed, put one article of clothing on it at a time, roll it up as tightly as possible, then sit on it for a few seconds. [5] This gets them much drier than hand-wringing alone. Your clothes will now easily air dry overnight draped over the furniture even if there's no fan or A/C.

How do I figure out where to stay and what to do, for free? Before you travel: WIKIVOYAGE or Quora. While you travel: ask people. My personal system is to upload Wikivoyage pages to my iPhone Notes, so I can use them even with no Internet connection. No muss, no fuss ...
How do I make friends in a strange city or country if I don't know anyone and I'm an introvert (that's me!)? Sign up for a several-hour activity of some kind through your hotel, hostel or whoever's offering one. Elephant riding, bamboo raft ride, parasailing, ziplining, hot springs soak, cooking class ... doesn't matter, whatever floats your boat. You'll inevitably meet people with whom you have something in common, strike up a conversation, and gather serious intel on this location (since they've probably been there a day or two) and lots of other places they just visited that they can't wait to tell you about and show you pictures of themselves standing in front of.
Always remember, the only hard part about travel is buying that first airplane ticket! Everything after that is easy.

I was on the red-eye London to Larnaca flight, which leaves at 10:30pm and gets in at 5am, so a 4.5 hour overnight flight . As soon as we take off the guy in front of me violently crashes his seat back, leaving the seat about 5 inches from my face; way more recline than the seat is supposed to have. I asked him politely to adjust his seat to a more normal recline, but he not-so-politely declined. I spoke to a flight attendant, who said ‘yes, his seat must be broken’, and asked him to adjust his seat, which he did momentarily and then as soon as she left reclined fully and turned and glared at me. She came over and said she was really sorry, but there was nothing she could do as the flight was 100% full. Thankfully, as an engineer and experienced traveller, I always keep some assorted sizes of cable ties (aka zip ties) in my carry-on, and as soon as he got up to go to the bathroom, I pulled out a ? inch cable tie, and in about 20 seconds, ‘fixed’ his seat so that it didn’t recline at all. He was totally befuddled when he returned, and called over the flight attendant to complain, but she just told him that his seat must be broken (while winking at me)…

McDonalds. McDonalds is about the most helpful thing on the face of the planet for people who travel light and cheap.
Wifi. In plenty of countries getting a SIM card for your phone is a pain in the ass. (In some it isn't. In fact, Geocell in the Republic of Georgia has a SIM card specifically for travelers.) But in plenty of countries it's basically impossible if you are traveling. McDonalds has free wifi all around the world and it is reasonably reliable. And also accessible without buying anything if you want. Just stand outside with everybody else and lunch off it.
Sometimes I freelance when I'm abroad. Not only does McDonalds have reasonably reliable wifi, it usually has accessible plugs and plenty of space to spread out in.
Toilets. They are usually completely accessible, even without buying anything.
English-speaking staff. Not all the time, but in 98% of cases somebody on the staff is going to speak English well. This is very helpful if you are lost and the somewhat reliable internet is having an unreliable moment.
I actually spend much more time in McDonalds when I'm traveling abroad than when I'm in the States.

This is not exactly hack, but... turn off your smartphone during airflight, at the moment you cross the boarding gate!
The reason is not plane security, but your own financial one. At 24th January, I had a plane from Moscow to New Delhi. That was going to be 1-month long trip, so I prepared everything. Also loaded my every smartphone account with 60 $ each in order to make emergency call abroad if needed (usually I use 15 $ at month in Russia).
The flight had to be 6 hours long, so I loaded myself with 2–3 beers at Sheremetyevo airport before the start. I had 3 phones on me: 1 for private use, 2 for job purpose. Due to concentration loss, I forgot to turn off one of them. During the flight, I slept, read a book, talked a little with neighbor. That’s it: didnt use this phone at all.
But when I landed at New Delhi, I discovered that I ran out of money on this phone. After seeing detalization of my mobile account, it turned out that as soon as I boarded on the plane, my network automatically changed from Russian “Megafon” to some “SITA OnAir Switzerland”. It was mobile telecom operating on plane boards only, even when aircraft is in the air. Plane was on the Moscow ground and didn’t even begin to move at that moment! During whole flight, my phone and “SITA OnAir” exchanged with 3 Mb of traffic (just pinging, I didn’t use the phone), which costed me 70 bucks. And nobody at Moscow airport tell you that they have this type of surprise for you! If I had 700 bucks at balance, it would be sucked out also: they stopped at level of 70 only because I ran out of money.
After returning home, I tried to figure out who is responsible for this, but Aeroflot company, nor Megafon were able to say anything. Mobile operator just said that it is not their responsibility. If some mobile telecom, operating in roaming area charges you with 1 million for a minute of talk, that’s their choice and nothing Megafon can do. So, it can happen, just as you make a step into a plane, you are already in other country!
Don’t fall into a trap like me, save you hard earned money!

If you’re heading to tropical countries, try these insect travel tips which have saved me and others with me **→ a lot ←** of pain and frustration.
I have a background in pest control and I travel to quite a few tropical countries and encounter insects or creatures that leave itchy bites on a regular basis and these are the hacks that I use.
Where possible, don’t leave your suitcases on the floor. They’re called ‘creepy crawlies’ for a reason. If you place your suitcase on the suitcase stand, you’re far less likely to take home or carry hitch hikers of the insect kind. Make those f*ckers walk. This won’t work 100% of the time but you’re trying to mitigate the risk.
Purchase local insect spray. You’ll find that the insect spray will be formulated to tackle the local insects. We tend to buy a can of insect spray in what ever country we’re in and use it liberally on the room and on the outside of our baggage. Different products work better on certain insects and your home-purchased product may not be designed or formulated to tackle *all* the local insects.

Some products are formulated to discourage biting insects but won’t kill the insect upon contact while others create a barrier effect and kill any insect upon contact. Read the instructions and information carefully. Where safe to do so, try to purchase a product with both properties.
Spray the zip area of your suitcase with an insect repellent/bug killer. Do it at home before you leave and then do it again on a regular basis when in a tropical country. Pay special attention to the folds in the heavy duty fabric. Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are no joke. Once established, they require specific products to kill them that aren’t generally available to the public. They also often require multiple treatments in order to disrupt the breeding cycle sine the eggs are very difficult to destroy. A spray with a repellent effect may not destroy them but it will stop you from taking these wee bastids home.
My last tip is one I use on a regular basis. There’s a good chance that even if you are careful, you’re going to get bit or stung. If the bite site is itchy, a very careful application of heat can destroy the itch inducing compounds very quickly. You’ll be left with the bite but the intense urge to scratch is gone. The effects have been studied and proven to be effective on a variety of insect bites, stings and even fire coral.[1] [2]

METHOD:
Most hotel rooms usually supply a jug and coffee making equipment. Boil the water and fill a ceramic cup. Wait until the water has cooled to a just tolerable level. WARNING -the level of heat might lead to serious injury - please be careful. The water should still be very hot but the ceramic should be cool enough to touch without causing injury. Test it on your inside wrist.
Once the water has reach the appropriate temperature, you can tip the water out and then carefully press the hot ceramic surface to the bite site. This usually feels pretty good and offers immediate relief. I usually hold it in place for 10 - 20 seconds before removing. You should notice the difference immediately.
If the itchiness returns, re-apply a freshly heated surface. Some use a flannel soaked in water as hot as they can handle. This might be a safer method but I personally found that a hot metal or ceramic surface conducts heat better.
My partner and I had a run in with fire coral in Bora Bora. This saved me the better part of a week of pain. The rash still took a few days to go down but the intense itching was gone within the hour.

Who doesn’t hate food poisoning?
People often worry about getting food poisoning while traveling abroad. For that, see your doctor to get the proper medications before you leave.
What many don’t know, is that they may be at risk from getting sick from the food in their own fridge, after traveling.
We all know that our power can go out, unexpectedly, for many reasons. We often have little control over this whether we are home or not, but at least while home, we know how long the power was out and if the food in our fridge stayed cool enough to be safe for eating.
How can we be assured our food stayed safe while we were away on vacation? Make a thaw detector!

To do this, fill a small cup with water and freeze it. Once the ice is solid, place a heavy coin on top of the ice and put it back in your freezer.
After your trip, check to see if the coin is still on top of the ice, or if it is now frozen inside of the ice at the bottom of the cup.
If the coin is found to have moved to the bottom, this means your freezer (and fridge) were off long enough for the ice to thaw. And, if the ice thawed, so did your food!
Even if everything is once again frozen, you need to throw out all perishable items from your refrigerator and freezer. (Unopened bottled or canned products may be OK, but check the label.)

Those with second homes.
Those who deal with evacuations during hurricanes or other natural disasters.
People who travel.
People who keep food in their company’s refrigerator or freezer over weekends or vacations.
Regardless of your location or travel plans, why not make a thaw detector for every fridge or freezer that you use? They’re cheap and easy to make, and can save you and others from getting sick from food that looks perfectly fine, but isn’t!
