I also fabricate some possible hiding spots (as in leaving dust tracks, making things seem just used, leaving a few tools lying around somewhere).
After that, I just scatter the paper clips in random hiding spots. I put one in my phone case and one in the metronome.

The detective then goes into my closet. Gets out the violin, does the same. This time, I pretend to be guilty again (as in telling them not to touch it and stuff). Thank goodness I had disturbed the dust there a bit, just to throw them off, but then, I messed around with the entire house.
Then, they spot the screwdriver next to my metronome. They take apart the metronome, and discover the paperclip. “That’s not it,” I say, laughing.

Fooled you, I shouted as I push the detective outside the door and slam it in their face. They didn’t even find all the paper clips I hid. This was a piece of cake, until I realize that I’d be finding random paperclips in my house for years on end.
Edit: well, this thing completely blew up overnight. So I think I’ll add a warning here. If for some reason you’re given 23 minutes to hide a paperclip, don’t sue me if these ideas don’t work.

I’m going to make myself a few additional rules, just to eliminate some of the really cheap options:
The paperclip must be both detectable and retrievable without damaging or disassembling the house or any obxt in it (e.g., no plastering it into the wall, or sewing it inside the lining of a suit jacket, or dropping it into a crack in the floorboards). [Opening or removing parts of obxts that are meant to be frequently opened or removed does not count.]
The hiding place cannot be hazardous to the detective in any way (e.g., no dropping it in the garbage disposal or sticking it in a live electrical socket).
The paperclip cannot itself be altered in any way (e.g., no unbending it to make it into a straight wire or painting it to camouflage).
There can only be one paperclip in the house, including any obxt that could easily be mistaken for a paperclip (i.e., no decoys).
It cannot be hidden on my person, nor can the hiding place involve any other living creature (e.g., no hiding it in an orifice, inside my shoe, or under a pet’s collar).
On the other hand, to avoid cheap solutions in the opposite direction, I’m going to assume that the detective has no special equipment like metal detectors or imaging devices—he has to search with his own senses.

As I pick up the book I’m currently reading, a piece of paper flutters to the floor. Mistaking it for my bookmark, I pick it up with an exasperated frown.
To my astonishment, not only is it not a bookmark, but the piece of paper is telling me that I will have 23 minutes to hide a paperclip that’s attached to my book, before a detective will come and search my house. Puzzled, I flip to the back of my book: a silver paperclip is taped to the back cover, glimmering in the sunlight.
I decide to play along with this game, as the book was boring anyways. I carefully rip the paperclip off the book, and start my search around the house.
I’m almost hyperventilating; every spot seems too good but also not good enough. I waste a good 15 minutes looking back and forth between my surroundings and my watch.
I find my sewing basket and puzzle on whether I should camouflage the clip with the silver needles before a brilliant idea strikes me: to hide decoys. Better yet, to cover the house in them.
I rush to the office, my fingers fumbling as I turn the key in my panic. I hop on my spinning desk chair to reach the tiny box on the shelves, only managing to knock both myself and the box to the floor. I wince as I brush paperclips out of my tangled hair.
After having gathered the swarm of paperclips, I dump them in all the possibly good places I found earlier. The last five paperclips in hand, I freeze at the sound of a knock at the door.
“It’s already unlocked!” I shout from the top of the stairs, trying to gain more time. I look around the hallway, checking for and empty spot but to no avail. I place one in my sock, one in my jacket pocket, one in my pants pocket, and one, unfortunately enough, in my hair (occasionally, it would prick my scalp).

As I pick up the book I’m currently reading, a piece of paper flutters to the floor. Mistaking it for my bookmark, I pick it up with an exasperated frown.
To my astonishment, not only is it not a bookmark, but the piece of paper is telling me that I will have 23 minutes to hide a paperclip that’s attached to my book, before a detective will come and search my house. Puzzled, I flip to the back of my book: a silver paperclip is taped to the back cover, glimmering in the sunlight.
I decide to play along with this game, as the book was boring anyways. I carefully rip the paperclip off the book, and start my search around the house.
I’m almost hyperventilating; every spot seems too good but also not good enough. I waste a good 15 minutes looking back and forth between my surroundings and my watch.

Trying to pull my pants up as far as I can, I meet the detective at the first floor. She’s wearing a neon hoodie, jeans, and holding a bag covered in cat stickers: the exact opposite of the stereotypical Sherlock Holmesian detective.
“Hello,” I said.
“Pleased to meet you,” said she. “I’m private investigator Ruby McDonald, and I’ve been hired for what appears to be some game with a paperclip.”
“Do you know who set this up?” I asked. I was quite curious as to who managed to get into my house. Maybe it had something to do with my tendency to not lock the door.
“No, I haven’t the foggiest. The letter I received was anonymous.” Ruby McDonald walked into the hallway and began her one-hour search. I mentally hit my head on the wall as I remembered how some of my hiding spots weren’t very good.
Ruby McDonald held up the first paperclip. “I’m suspecting this is a decoy? I’ve been through quite a number of houses this afternoon.”
I nodded.
As Ruby McDonald continued through my private belongings (“I don’t know why my bedroom is covered in stuffed animals, ma’am”) I started to panic.
“Is this the paperclip?” She asked, holding a silver paperclip.
“Um.”
A light sparked in Ruby McDonald’s eyes. “Is it or is it not?”
“I don’t know.”
A beat of silence.
“You don’t know?” She said.
“I don’t,” I said, quivering in fear internally. I had completely lost track of which paperclip was which.

I frowned. I thought that inside a stuffed animal had been a particularly good idea. I stared hopelessly at the ceiling, imagining what would happen next.
Ruby McDonald trounced down to the front hallway, and with a final wave, walked out the door.
“Wait,” I said, “that’s it? I just lose and you leave?”
“Yes,” Ruby McDonald said. “Goodbye. I have another house to visit.” Neon hoodie, jeans, bag-covered-in-cat-stickers and all she rode off on her dented bicycle as I peered through the doorway.
And that was that. I never saw her again.
But as I held up the 202nd paperclip in my hand, I repeated her victorious smirk.
After all, nothing on the paper said I couldn’t lie.

I’d put it the same place I used to hide joints during school trips.
I’d carefully tear the edge of the paper wrapper surrounding a new Tampax tampon. Then I’d slip the tampon out of the wrapper, take it out of the cardboard applicator and cut most of the cotton off.
I’d return the little bit of cotton with the string to the applicator, hide what I needed to hide, in this case a paperclip, and then slip the whole thing back into the wrapper. Then I’d use a small piece of double-sided tape to reseal the paper wrapper.
Lastly, I’d slide the whole tampon back into the box, being sure to have the side I tampered with at the bottom.
Ta-da!

i am calmly writing on quora and suddenly my eyes go black
when i wake up i see a paper with a paper clip attatched to the top. the paper reads “you have 23 minutes to hide this paperclip as best you can”. as soon as i read the last word i see a timer on the top of my vision. i immediately start looking for places that would leave no trace, maybe in plain sight, under the rug? how about on the fan? then the idea hits me.
anywhere in the house?
where is somewhere IN the house that i can hide a paperclip? and the best idea is honestly also the worst. how about i tape it to the inside of my toilet? not even on the rim either, i mean INSIDE the pipes. he’s gonna have some hard time getting it, even if he decides to look there.
*23 minutes later*
i have successfully put the paper clip in the toilet, and dried my arm (yes, i put it FAR in the pipes). i also put a whole ton of decoy paper clips around the house, and moved just about every single item i own. i stand next to the door waiting for whoever is going to look for it to arrive
knock knock
i open the door and let the detective in.
“turn your pockets”

i empty them of the whole ton of junk i have in them (i never clean my pockets, honestly a bad habit) along with the decoy paper clips. he asks if any of them are it, and i say no. he spends about 5–10 minutes questioning me. the questions seem to be nonsense, maybe to trick me into saying something or what, but after that i get bored and only answer “purple” (anyone who can reference that to me wins an award) he starts looking around, under stuff, and getting increasingly frustrated. after he has only 10 minutes left he starts entering rooms, looking at me, then leaving. at about 57 minutes i decide to tease him and say “looks like your not going to find it, feel free to use the bathroom on the way out”
he immediately runs to the bathroom and starts checking it out. when the timer goes off, he asks me where it was. i proceed to stick my arm down the toilet and grab the paperclip. i show it to him, and he genuinely looks impressed. he grabs a rubber glove out of nowhere and puts it on, shakes my hand, and leaves.
after that, i black out again, and wake up back in front of my laptop. instead of quora, my bank account is open, with +100 on the screen. all in a days work
