In my humble opinion - THE most useful and time-saving 'hack' I have learned over the years (as a multi-million mile flyer):
If you arrive at an airport and notice your flight has been cancelled (or significantly delayed) due to weather or some other natural or man-made event DO NOT:
- stand in line at a check-in desk to wait for a person to speak to; the line will likely be absurdly long and move incredibly slowly as each person will require individual routing assistance;
- call the airline's service desk which, in most cases, will have a huge wait and will frequently tell you to seek assistance at the airport;
- call your travel agent; they will simply call the airline.
Instead, go through security - your boarding pass will still be good even if your fight has been cancelled - and speak to an airline staff member at a gate or, better yet, to a person in your airline's lounge (if you're fortunate enough to have access).
The last time I used this hack I arrived at the airport which was in chaos with hundreds (if not thousands) of people waiting to speak to check-in agents. I passed by the check-in desk for my airline and found out that, due to weather, my flight had been cancelled. The very nice and helpful person directed me to the premium check-in line which, they apologetically admitted, would probably take 30 - 45 minutes or so. (That line had 16 people, the economy line had at least a hundred. )
Instead I cleared security, walked over to the gate where my (now cancelled ) plane was to leave, spoke to a gate agent, and was on a different plane less then 30 minutes later. I arrived only a few hours later then I originally intended.
I'll throw in a few hints which are probably obvious to most but will hopefully be of aid to some:
给航空公司的服务台打电话,在大多数情况下,服务台会有很长的等待时间,并且会经常告诉你到机场寻求帮助;

1) What's the 'best airline in the united states'? This is the question I am asked more often then any other. The answer is: 'whichever airline you have the highest status with'. A few years back I booked a flight the day before Christmas - fairly last-minute - on an airline with which I had no status because they had a direct flight. When I arrived at the airport the airline told me that the flight was overbooked - by 12 passengers - and that I would have to travel on another day or I could have a refund (which would mean I would miss Christmas with my family). I walked over to the airline with which I have top status - with my now useless ticket - and they went above and beyond to get me home, with an upgrade, at no extra charge. (I did have to go though 2 cities but I made it 'the night before Christmas'.)
2) If at all possible, check in from home, print your boarding pass, and keep an electronic copy of your boarding pass on your phone (you're much less likely to lose that, you can always use it to get a printed copy, the TSA takes less time with electronic boarding passes than with paper ones).
3) Take public transportation if you're going to the airport anytime there is a great deal of traffic. A cab to JFK from Manhattan will take anywhere from one to two hours in rush hour. A train will take 35 minutes .

4) If at all possible DON'T check in any baggage. You're at the airline's / airport's / customs' mercy with a checked-in bag. In contrast, with a carry-on you're nimble, you can switch planes, switch routes, go to hotels overnight if you get stuck and have all your stuff with you.
5) Be nice to the airline staff. Be talkative. Be friendly. To the check-in agent, the gate agents, the stewardesses. They will appreciate that you're trying to make their day better - if nothing else you'll get good karma.
6) Always ask if you can 'buy an upgrade' if you're in economy or business class. Try to do this after you've done 3: 50% of the time you'll be told 'no', 25% of the time you'll be given an an absurd price, 15% of the time you'll be given a reasonable price, 10% of the time you'll get a free upgrade.
7) If you travel frequently, invest in lounge access. It doesn't matter that you don't need the lounge to pass the time, you'll need it when you need to change a flight. I recently missed a flight (because I woke up late), and through the aid of a 2 helpful lounge staff in 2 different cities I was on the next flight out even though both flights were officially 'full'.
8) Relax! Travel is stressful. Anxiety and anger won't get you there any faster.

You can buy fully refundable first class tickets, eat from the lounge, and refund your ticket. It's unethical I know, don't bash me.
Don’t wear sports shoes. Wear shoes that are more rugged.
If you want to exchange your currency, visit as many exchanges as possible. Chances are you'll get a much better rate.
Google things that identify you as a foreigner. Try your best to blend in. You'll be safer that way.
Find dollar stores. You can get all your basic necessities there for a dollar or less.
Eat more greens if you are constantly traveling within the country. You don't want an upset stomach.
Download offline Google map of the area your visiting. Save your staying place as “Home.” You'll never get lost.
Keep one of those old school Nokia phones with you. You never know when you'll run out of charge.

Carry pepper spray with you. Once you use it, you'll know how helpful it is.
Save your water bottles. You can always refill them in hospitals.
If you want to eat at restaurants, visit during closing time. Prices are half then.
Dont waste money on deodorants. Use vinegar.
Always carry a pocket knife and a lighter. In airports, make sure they are not in your hand luggage.
Use devices with higher internal memory. Sometimes you lose SD cards.
People forget how important a pen is. Always carry 2 ball point pens with you. It can even serve as a defensive weapon.
Stuff all your small accessories inside your socks. That way you'll never lose them.
Try your best to keep your expensive belongings in your hand luggage. You never know when the airport might lose your baggage.
Keep scanned copies of your identity cards and passport in your email.
If you can, try finding fellow travellers to the same destination. Sharing costs always helps.
Don't book one way tickets. Take the longest transit stops possible, that way you can get cheaper tickets.

Leena Pathma, Lived a little. Messed up a lot. Enjoyed every bit of it.
If you want help, ask store clerks. They may not be able to communicate well with you, but they may be able to find someone who can, and you don’t have to worry about them trying to rip you off.
Keep petty cash in your pocket, and always pay from that stash. Keep some backup money in your backpack or luggage, but when potential thieves see that you’re pulling money out of your pocket, they’ll be less interested - or they might only steal a small sum.
Wear sunglasses if you can. When you’re in an unfamiliar place you tend to look around a lot. There are people who are able to tell if you’re a foreigner at first glance. Hiding your eyes makes you look more sure of yourself, and you’ll be a less likely target for people hoping to benefit off a lost and confused tourist.
Roll your clothes. You’d be surprised at how much space that saves.
Leave photocopies of your passport with people back home. For security and emergency situations.
Get a local number. It’s waaaay cheaper to use mobile data with a local sim card than on roaming.
Dress down. Don’t try too hard to stand out, especially if you’re in a poor neighbourhood. You’re only inviting trouble.
Print out the name and address of the place you’re staying at - along with your host’s phone number (if any). Especially useful when you’re going where people don’t speak your language.
Take a picture of your luggage. It’s come in handy for me before.
If you’re visiting a country with a different language, avoid restaurants that have a menu in your native tongue/English. These are tourist traps.
When someone approaches you on the street asking for/offering something, smile, shake your head, and walk away. Even if you feel pity for someone, being generous here will only lead to you being followed for a few streets by others who want your money.
That’s all I can think of right now. Oh, and, enjoy the trip!

My favorite travel hack right now is to book one-way tickets instead of round-trip. Instead of searching for only round-trip tickets, search for one-way there and one-way back, which is sometimes a lot less expensive.
Second favorite all-time travel hack - always browse in hidden, “incognito mode”. Sites like Kayak always track your behavior and if you return a number of times to search for the same trip, they will increase the price knowing that you are more likely to be very interested in booking.
Third favorite travel hack - do not travel internationally in the Summer. Wait until after labor day, where the flights are much less expensive and the crowds start to dissipate as the kiddos go back to school.

Never take a night bus, because drivers are often tired
Always take seat in a vessel close to the driver. Driver has always the best place
Avoid drinking much if taking a long bus trip

Always have same small, but enough for locals, cash in pocket for case of robbery
Have a duvet with you as a sleeping bag in case the hotel looks suspicious (bed bugs)
Put your clothes in plastics in bagpack. Avoids dirt, hinders bug spread out, is practicable
If out for day trip, hide your wealthy stuff somewhere above i.e. upon air conditioner. Let some dollars under your pillow for potential thiefs.
永远不要坐夜车,因为夜班司机经常很累;
务必坐在靠近驾驶员的地方,司机位置总是最好的;
如果乘长途汽车旅行,避免酗酒;

Eat where locals eat, saves much money.
Eat only where locals wait in queue, never where no local is.
Eating no meat is much safer.
Have a small bag of nuts with you as emergency food.
Eating is much saver at street cookers, because you can see how clean it is.
Western chains like Kentucky Chicken, Mc Donalds, etc have clean, french toilets and breakfast (even in China)

Arriving at airport, port, busstop, etc be slow and let all others run.
Arriving in a new country first, book your first night in advance. It saves you nerves after a long flight. Especially arriving in dark or night is stressful. Same with your last night before a flight.
Asking for direction in China: look to people, if they look back you can walk to them and ask. Otherwise they will completely ignore you or run away, because they cant speak english and fear to loose their face.
Asking for any help in China (if you are male): Ask female teens or tweens with glasses. They usually speak english and are friendly and eager to help. And get a selfie with for as thank you.
Have a pen and notepad with you to sketch what ever you need, if you dont speak the local language.

Check out what the local scams are. Every region has its favourites.
Usually other western travellers help you, if you are in trouble. You are not alone.
If you are on a very tight budget, ask an Israeli for advice and help.
Police isnt always your friend. Strongly depends on the country and overall wealth. Ask in a hotel for advice - go to police or not.
Trust your gut.
