For non-Americans, what is the worst American food?

I actually held a non-scientific poll among my co-workers once while I lived overseas. Some of the candidates were peanut butter (one colleague loved it but the others couldn’t stand it), marshmallow Fluff, pumpkin pie — that culture does eat the local squash that resembles pumpkin, but as a vegetable, not for dessert — and a few others that I no longer recall.
But the top most disgusting American food as chosen by my office mates were the following:
cereal

Profile photo for Jim Grupé
I believe these might be considered the two most disgusting foods by most Americans as well. The others might not classify them as food.

I’m not even sure what it was that I was eating. OH and I had five days in New York before boarding a cruise ship back to Australia ( fabulous cruise, by the way). One evening in NY we felt hungry so stopped at a little grill type place on 7th Ave and I ordered a ham and mushroom omelette. That was OK but it came with something I hadn’t ordered..it looked a bit like smashed up hash browns but tasted of nothing. Weird texture and no taste..I only ate a couple of mouthfulls before just giving up.
On the other hand I actually tried grits in Charleston, SC ( same cruise) and found that quite tasty as were the shrimp it came with. Also had fantastic calamari and large shrimp ( what we Aussies call jumbo prawns) in Hawaii ( different cruise) slightly spicy and utterly delicious. The coffee in Hawaii was also the best we tasted in the US.

Jim Grup
The stuff in NY might *also* have been grits. I’m from NY, and for a long time regarded “grits” as something below wallpaper paste. But then I lived in a Southern state for a while and discovered their version of grits. OMG! Admittedly, it benefitted from lots of butter, salt and pepper, but I actually *deliberately* ordered more from time to time - and started making my own.
Grits is, of course, corn based. There is a similar concoction made from wheat called “spoon bread”. I’ve only had it once, and it made wallpaper paste seem gourmet.

Hazel Lindsay
This stuff really did look like leftover hash browns mushed up.. As you say it could have been grits and it would have made wallpaper paste gourmet. I’ve never had anything quite as tasteless before or since.
The hotel we stayed in had a complimentary self serve breakfast each morning which was really good and set us up for the day so this “stuff’ came as a surprise.
One other surprise was getting potato crisps with a sandwich..we’d never come across that before but we were assured that was normal..this was in the cafe on Ellis Island..great place to visit.

Crisps with a sandwich is pretty normal in the UK.

Hazel Lindsay
I’m from the UK originally and, pre covid, I flew there most years. I have never been given a complimentary packet of crisps with a sandwich. Mind you, it’s been two years since I was there, July 2019, so things might have changed.

Rob Watkin
Supermarkets do meal deals of a sandwich, a drink and always a bag of crisps, have done for years. Walkers Crisps are running adverts at the moment asking whether you have your crisps to the side of your sandwich or put them inside! My wife does the latter, I don't.

Hazel Lindsay
Yeah I’ve seen those meal deals in supermarkets..particularly those “Local” small stores. I was thinking more of buying a sandwich and a coffee in a cafe. On Ellis Island the sandwiches were huge so we shared one between us and were given a large packet of crisps..

Gary Cummings
Some hashbrowns are just terrible. Now grits and shrimp are delicious. Calamari is wonderful, but some Americans will not eat it. AND , a big yes, Kona coffee is great !!!!

Hazel Lindsay
We also had Calamari and jumbo shrimp in Key West..also delicious. Calamari is pretty popular here in Australia ..we even get it in fish and chip shops.Battered or crumbed I just love it.
We had pretty dire coffee in New York, not too bad in Charleston, dire again in Key West but the stuff in Hawaii was great..well apart from a coffee chain place in a mall in Honolulu. We had a port stop in Kona and we bought several packets of ground coffee to take home.

Hazel Lindsay
We were at an Italian place in Fremantle the other night..terrific calamari..served with chunky fries and an Italian salad. You can get calamari almost anywhere here.

Jim Grup
I hate squid. :-) You can get good and bad coffee everywhere.. it all depends on who is makng it. The WORST is Amtrak, who must use water drained from old steam engines.

David Bashforth
It’s all a matter of taste. Personal I find the cheese inedible, cakes far too sweet, and would steer away from anything with more than half a dozen additives.

Herbert Skaggs
I am from the USA and can only relate what foreigners have told me.
A Chinese person said they thought cheese was utterly disgusting. She would not eat it.
A Mexican told me that the cold cuts served at many functions were pathetic. We could be eating some good “comida mexicana sabrosa” just as easily as these goddam “cold cuts gringos”.
Many people think peanut butter is grotesque. Hell I live on peanut butter, or would if I could. And I love cheese! I could do without cold cuts, true, and I’d eat Mexican cuisine any time over USA cuisine.
USA cuisine has greatly improved in the last decades, thanks largely to the efforts of Julia Child, who taught Yanks how to use herbs and make sauces.

Quack The Duck
A chinese person complained about cheese…. that explains everything about their “cuisine”. If you think bugs, rotten soy product and chicken feet are food, and syrup belongs on deep fried “meat”, then yeah, I could see how you think cheese, and wine, and whiskey, and steak, and delicate sauces are gross.
Did she also despise showering and toilet paper?
I am surprised about a Mexican complaining about lunch meat, but then I consider what some people qualify as lunch meat. Mexico doesn’t have lunch meat on par with America’s best, but what the do have is certainly better than America’s worse.
And if you think Mexican cuisine is better than American cuisine and Julia Childs introduced good cooking to Americans, you must’ve grown up in a trailer park. No offense, of course.

Susan Schlee
I agreed with you up until the Mexican cuisine. I live in Texas and it is completely endemic to our food culture- just like barbecue brisket. I would literally eat it every day and it is so easy to prepare! I feel sorry for people who can't even make their own tacos without a kit!
That fancy French crap is what I can't stand, neither is putting something sweet on something that should be salty and putting salt on something that should be sweet.

Ella Johnson
Myself, I would say the Food Network awakened Americans to more home cooking, to other cultures. I would credit Julia Child for being brave enough to tackle the complacency that had become American cuisine. She made it okay to try other herbs, flavorings and ideas and being open to Europeon cuisine. She has never been matched to this day, in style and appeal.

Quack The Duck
I enjoy Mexican food well enough. But it’s not really on par with many other cuisines.
No offense, people who don’t enjoy French food normally cannot afford it. I am not saying you in particular, but in general that’s the problem. And since every other type of cuisine has heavily borrowed from French food, including Spanish and Mexican, it’s clear it’s the global standard.
Most of why British people enjoy whatever ethnic food is available is because that’s who is willing to work as a professional in the kitchen. Running a restaurant is extremely difficult, and immigrant labor usually finds it as the easiest business to enter into. For those reasons you’d don’t really see many affordable restaurants run by British people in America, Canada, the UK, or Australia/NZ.
But if you crack open a cookbook, and are willing to spend money on QUALITY ingredients, and train to properly cook, then you will see the difference.
There’s nothing in Mexican cuisine that can hold up to Beef Wellington and Stout.
Even something apparently pedestrian like fish and chips or roast lamb. It’s simply that Americans would rather eat hot dogs and mac n cheese in their own kitchen, than spend money on quality ingredients, proper cookware and develop the skills to execute a good dish.
It’s not British or French in origin, but Polish soups are on a completely different level than anything exotic you’ll ever have.
Ask Europeans what they think of Mexican food. Again, I really, really like it. But I can tell you that people who haven’t grown up eating processed foods and know the taste of real vegetables and quality meat don’t look to drown their food in overwhelming spices.
I really hope I am not coming across rude, Susan Schlee because I don’t really mean “you” personally, just speaking generally to Americans.

Alexander Christopher
the anti-Chinese racist. Not enough for you to also demean someone’s habits (some of which is also untrue) just because she don’t like cheese? Especially when cheese in its most basic form is rotten milk.

Quack The Duck
Uh… how am I racist?
The French specialize in it.
You really want to compare takeout eating by hungover kids to the stuff that sells on $100 plates?
I have heard of streets being isolated for the sale of rotten tofu - it’s that revolting. I haven’t heard the same of cheese.
What is racist about stating facts, boy?

Maybe you don’t know that claiming that one kind of cultural food is “high end” is arrogant and even racist. Especially as each cultures have its own high end food. Claiming one has no taste or even claiming Chinese food has no “high end” food?

No problem. In true American style they took it back and cooked another meal for me that I liked.

I only eat fried okra because the slimy-ness of it cooked any other way is gross to me.
Picked fresh from the garden or preserved in the freezer from the garden, it's so easy to fix and fry.

I used to hate okra, because my mama cooked it and it was slimey. Then I had some which was fried and non-slimey.

Peanut butter and jelly. Barf.
The bread is already too sweet by itself. And then it gets slathered with two kinds of sugar goo. There’s no texture to speak of, and nothing but sickly sweet.
It’s not edible.
I have no issues with peanut butter alone, or a dollop of marmalade on NON-SWEET toast. But Americans use their friggin sugary white bread and the amount of peanut butter and jelly on it is like 3 tablespoons each.
American yellow cheese slices shouldn’t be eaten with salami and whatever. But I find that in a burger, they are indispensable. There are also some obxtively very good cheeses coming out of Wisconsin. All types of cheeses are made in America, and a lot of it is pretty good. It’s just the processed yellow slices that many people have issues with. That doesn’t mean no good cheese comes from the USA.

That’s OK. Most Americans would puke if presented with a bowl of congee.
Everything depends on what you ate when you were growing up.

Hanson Hsu
I think congee is kinda gross, too. It’s basically overcooked rice in a thin broth. Whenever I eat it, I think it’s something easy to digest that’s for sick people to eat. The milky color reminds me of unwashed rice.
The only one I like is one made with fresh milkfish. The rice grains are not mushy but are more substantial, like regular rice. Comes steeped in a fresh fish broth with aromatics, and fried bits of crispy fish. The good stuff is always made with fish caught the same day. It’s so fresh there’s no fishy smell or taste at all. You have to get up at like 7 and drive to the vendor to get it, and you must eat it on the spot.

John Binkley
Sounds good to me (but I use a lot of fish sauce in lots of things, so there’s that). But I suspect most Americans would still not be enthralled with it.

Hanson Hsu
Ever tried garum? Very similar to fish sauce. Can’t really taste if when you don’t use a huge amount, though. Reminds me of worcestershire sauce. A lot of Americans use it and do like the umami it adds.

I can honestly say I've never tried Amish cheese. I would imagine it is much better than standard cheese because it uses traditional methods and ingredients (milk basically)
This is a list of ingredients in one brand
Kraft Foods lists Velveeta's ingredients as: milk, water, whey, milk protein concentrate, milkfat, whey protein concentrate, sodium phosphate, and 2% or less of salt, calcium phosphate, lactic acid, sorbic acid, sodium citrate, sodium alginate, enzymes, apocarotenal, annatto, and cheese culture.

To us Americans, most food here tastes good.
But if you’re from another country, you may find it bad because so much of it is mass produced rather than freshly prepared. Lots of chemical additives to change the texture or give it a longer shelf life, not to mention the use of genetically modified ingredients, can all change the flavor or wipe it out completely.

Paul Gallo
It's a cultural thing depending on where you're from and what you're used to, much of the food in the United States is a mixture of cultures and some of it is actually garbage and nobody knows what's in it.
