The UK has recorded the highest number of daily Covid-19 cases since the beginning of the pandemic, with 78,610 reported on Wednesday.
The previous record was 68,053 on 8 January - when the UK was in lockdown.
Speaking at a news conference, England's chief medical officer Prof Chris Whitty warned that records will be broken a lot in the next few weeks.

He added people should prioritise what matters with regards to social mixing in the run-up to Christmas.
Speaking alongside Prof Whitty, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said it was "absolutely vital" that everyone gets a booster jab.

He warned that in some areas the doubling rate for cases was now under two days, adding: "I'm afraid we're also seeing the inevitable increase in hospitalisations up by 10% nationally, week-on-week, and up by almost a third in London."
Prof Whitty said the country was experiencing two separate epidemics, one driven by the "very rapidly-growing" Omicron variant and the other by the Delta variant.

"I'm afraid we have to be realistic that records will be broken a lot over the next few weeks as the rates continue to go up," he added.
Asked whether people should be going to Christmas or New Year parties, Prof Whitty: "Don't mix with people you don't have to.

"[You] don't need a medical degree to realise that is a sensible thing to do with an incredibly infectious virus."
He encouraged people to take tests before visiting vulnerable people and to meet in areas of good ventilation or outdoors if possible.

The prime minister said the government was not cancelling Christmas events by restricting gatherings or closing pubs and restaurants, but cautioned people to think carefully about the socialising they did.
He said: "I said many times that I thought that this Christmas will be considerably better than last Christmas, and I stick to that."

Questions about whether restrictions should be introduced are going to grow the more cases rise.
That is understandable. But it is also important to remember restrictions don't stop the epidemic - they just prolong it.
They can be used to buy you time. Last winter the lockdown allowed the rollout of vaccines.
With more than 80% of the most vulnerable boosted the benefits of a lockdown are much lower this time.

The costs, however, are the same, perhaps greater considering what people have endured so far in terms of the harm to jobs, mental health and education.
What would change the equation significantly is if the NHS is going to be overwhelmed, which would deny people basic life-saving care.

Clearly the NHS is struggling, doctors are pointing out care is suffering, but the situation is very different from last winter when over a third of beds were occupied by Covid patients.
Will that happen again? The modelling released so far is unclear as there is so much uncertainty.
Hospital cases could peak at half the level of last winter under the best-case scenario, or approaching double in the worst.

Prof Whitty also urged "really serious caution" over reports a reduction in hospitalisations was being seen in cases of Omicron in South Africa.
He said the threat of the NHS being overwhelmed was very serious because of the "absolutely phenomenal pace" at which Omicron was spreading.

"I am afraid there will be an increasing number of Omicron patients going into the NHS, going into hospital, going into intensive cares," he said. "That will begin to become apparent, in my view, fairly soon after Christmas."

Cases have risen by nearly 20,000 in one day - on Tuesday, 59,610 confirmed cases were confirmed by the government. Hospital admissions tend to lag about two weeks behind cases.
The jump in cases follows the introduction of new measures in recent days, with mandatory face masks in most indoor settings and Covid passes for large events in England.

The message from England's top doctor was clear. He was at pains to repeat it several times: in the run-up to Christmas, stay at home unless it really matters.
His language about "prioritising" or "de-prioritising" events might have been less blunt. But under repeated questioning that was the clear implication.

That's not, though, a message the prime minister was willing, or perhaps able, to repeat.
The political pressure on him not to introduce more restrictions is intense after 100 of his backbenchers stuck two fingers up at him on Tuesday night by voting against part of his pandemic plan.
But Prof Whitty's message will likely be heard loud and clear: what we all do in the next few days and weeks will make a difference to how fast the pandemic spreads.

At the news conference, the prime minister said the government was taking the right approach currently, after being asked if more restrictions were needed given the case numbers.
Mr Johnson explained the Plan B measures and the booster campaign were a "double strategy" and vaccines were a "tool we didn't have a year ago".

Wednesday's daily figures also showed the UK gave out 656,711 booster or third doses of a vaccine - up by over 140,000 on the day before.
There were 165 deaths of people who tested positive for Covid in the previous 28 days.

Concerns over the speed at which the Omicron variant is spreading in the UK have also been expressed by health officials.
The head of the UK Health Security Agency, Dr Jenny Harries, warned Omicron was "probably the most significant threat" since the pandemic began.
And the chief executive of NHS England said Wednesday's case numbers "should worry all of us".

Amanda Pritchard told the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee: "That is a stark reminder of why the current national mission to get Covid vaccination is the right one."
The Scottish government have advised people to limit socialising to three households at a time in the run-up to Christmas, as well as warning more restrictions could be needed.

Similarly, people in Wales have been told additional measures cannot be ruled out over Christmas, while the health officials in Northern Ireland have said re-introducing restrictions may be needed to cope with rising Covid cases.

My dad works at a police call center in central London (biggest one). They have a massive open floor setup, they've been moving operators around to make sure there's at least 6 feet between desks and windows permanent opened.
My dad caught it somehow and within 7 days of him testing positive, they had 81 people from his floor also testing positive. Not sure who was the spreader but yeah, this shit spreads super easy.
He quarantined in the spare room at home, literally didn't leave except to use the toilet, we made sure no one touched anything he touched without gloves/spray. Within a week, we were all positive. Fortunately no major symptoms except for a bit of a fever and major fatigue but the after effects fucking suck.
I've just turned 30, quite sporty, gym 3 times a week etc. Can't even walk up 14 stairs now without having to stand there gasping for air. Would not wish it on anyone.

TheFergPunkScotland
Hope you feel better, I caught it last year in October. Similar age to yourself and also go to the gym as regularly. I ended up unable to taste or smell anything for 2 weeks and had a terrible headache throughout.

Currently the entire EU and the US is watching the UK's hospitalisation numbers and crossing their fingers.
If ICU rates stay the same as they were for delta, then we could all be a bit fucked.

Polymatheia
Not looking like ICU rates are trending like delta thankfully

78,000 new cases, compared to 59,000 yesterday and 51,000 on the same day last week. This is the first day of seeing an impact from Omicron, goodness knows what we'll see next week. By the way, the official case numbers do not include reinfections, if you've had Covid before your new case does not show up in the daily total. Previously this didn't make a big difference but with the emergence of Omicron, where reinfection is much more likely, we really need to change this.
Only positive is the booster push is having a significant impact, with 650,000 given yesterday. Our previous best was 500,000. (Well short of the target but a worthwhile increase, we'll see how it tracks over the next few days.)
What truly matters is hospitalisation numbers. We'll get the earliest indication of how much impact Omicron is going to have by looking at London, where it makes up the highest proportion of cases. Hospitalisations lag behind case numbers as it takes time for people to get sick, it will be a few more days before we start to get an idea of how this is going to go. (Today's case numbers for London are 19,000, compared to 7,000 this time last week.)

What really pisses me off is all the idiots saying that there's been no hospitalisations so this must be a mild variants. A few news outlets incorrectly reported this and now they all parrot that sentiment. The real answer is we don't know yet.

Roadto6plates
See a lot of that idiocy here too.
Wait 2 weeks then see what it's actually like.

KnightOfWords
It's really difficult to tell whether if it's genuinely milder or not. South Africa is seeing a lower number of hospitalisations compared to the same point in their Delta wave, but that could be because far more people there have a degree of prior immunity from their previous infections. London hospitalisations will give us a far clearer picture of how a country with our vaccination level and demographics is affected, the average age in the UK is much higher than in South Africa.

Redeemium
The recent yougov polling for covid restrictions is interesting. It looks like on the whole the majority still support the restrictions, which is surprising to me. Will people really tolerate another period of tier 4 or lockdown?

KnightOfWords
I don't think we'll see another true lockdown. The most vulnerable have been offered boosters and lateral flow tests are a good tool to use before socialising (but, the larger the event the less effective they are). I'd hope we can be flexible enough to respond to the situation we find ourselves in, and the greater the pressure on health services the more tolerant we can be of restrictions. For me the question is how can we get the most value from restrictions while having the least impact on peoples' lives? If we do restrict hospitality then staff and businesses need to be supported.
We're probably going to see a lot of public events cancelled anyway, whether there are restrictions or not. Some theatre productions have already been suspended because the cast have come down with Covid, the same is going to happen with sports teams. Estimates are that a million people are going to be self-isolating by Christmas with Covid, I'm afraid it's not going to be a normal Christmas for many people.

ConsiderablyMediocreEuropean unx
If omicron puts a big strain on the NHS then yeah I'd support a lockdown. But at the moment the data seems to suggest the vast, vast majority of people who get it will just have cold symptoms and be mostly okay - much milder than delta. I suppose only time will tell but so far things look somewhat promising.
It also looks like a lockdown wouldn't do much at this point. Omicron is so infectious that we'd be past the peak and coming back down in cases before lockdown has a chance to curb things.

And yet no one seems to care, I still see many many people without masks indoors. Apathy will kill many this winter.
Edit: vaccines don't negate the need for mask wearing, immunocompromised folk can still die even with vaccines, bed blocking will kill non-covid patients.

Honestly the numbers are not that big a surprise because pre-Omicron they were already up there, its just there was too much attention being given to the state of things in parts of Europe (i.e. Germany who we were not far behind at the time)

He has fucked things up again!
He is treating COVID the way I treat a dropped fizzy drink;
Open it up a little to let it get all agitated, let it rise. Then when it overflows, wash all the sticky blood off my hands and carry on giving fat contracts to my mates.

2 days ago this sub was saying that the media and goverenment are fearmongering, that Omicron is mild and nothing to worry about, and the government had better not introduce restrictions.
Now when the predicted case rises are happening, all the top comments are (rightly) criticising goverenment inaction.
Where did you go 'media hysteria' people? You deserve the stupid incompetent government you have.

MegaMugabe21
Honestly with the infectivity of Omicron, I'm not super sure what could have been done here. It honestly seems like if a national lockdown had been called after the first case was found, it still would have risen dramatically.

mrblobbysknob
Even if you take omicron out of the equation, there was going to be a rise in infections in the winter months because that is what happens with respiratory viruses.
What he could have done was started the WFH and masks order at the beginning of November, at least. He always leaves it too late to make any kind of hard decision.
Instead we now have a prime minister who probably should call a lockdown, but won't because his party will hang him out to dry if he does.

Scrugulus
I am a bit shocked that Johnson can't even bring himself to at least advice people to avoid social gatherings before Christmas. Instead he is standing there waffling something about how this Christmas is going to be better than last Christmas.

Let’s look at the positives here, lots of people getting antibodies by getting the virus and also by getting the shot. Reports of milder symptoms. Much rather get this one than delta. If Omicron replaces delta then surely it’ll be better for the nhs.

Glittering_Cut5928
Not if the numbers are considerably higher. If omicron causes half the hospitalisation but it infects 4x faster - you’ll effectively have double the hospitalisations that delta had. And tbh it seems to be the case. This thing has only been around couple of weeks and we already reached numbers never seen before

DefiantEnvironment97
It’s currently absurd. I’m not exaggerating at all when I say that 75+% of people that I know in London either have covid or have a suspiciously similar to covid illness that lateral flow tests aren’t picking up as covid. Everybody is ill.

minnieminute
I gasped when I saw the cases, it is such a sharp jump from yesterday

Zestyclose_Arugula71
If it’s so transmissible then everyone will get it, thus meaning herd immunity is finally developed until another variant comes along.
