Simply because it's useful and fun.
I don't think a lot of people in the West realize just how many people speak Mandarin. Mandarin Chinese is the language with the most native speakers in the world with a whopping 918 million people speaking it as their native tongue. That is absolutely a huge number, and that amount of speakers does wonders for a language. Lately, with the rise of the PRC, the influence of Chinese language media has increased significantly, and, for the purposes of this post, the most important one is the online sphere.
Especially in the past 5 years, Chinese games, Chinese comics, Chinese animation, Chinese books, etc. are everywhere on the Anglophone internet and they're garnering a lot of positive attention.
Specifically, in the gaming market, Chinese(PRC) games are getting more and more competitive. Some famous games I can list off the top of my head are:

Simply put, it's impossible to be a gamer and not know about Chinese media. Especially with the release of Genshin Impact, I'm sure everybody saw just how much Chinese game developers have improved their game.
In terms of animation, 2016's Mo Dao Zu Shi (Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation) and 2020's Tian Guan Ci Fu (Heaven Official's Blessing), both adaptations of BL books authored by Moxiang Tongxiu, are certainly among the best in the industry and also quite well-known on the internet. This year’s lix Click was very impressive and managed to top the charts of the highest-rated shows on a few sites.
There are also many, many more that I'm not personally too familiar with but the work put into the animations is honestly extremely impressive.

In my experience, these Chinese animations are of the utmost quality both in terms of actual animation and plot. In an online environment where fans were all too familiar with Japan and the US having a duopoly over most content produced, it’s certainly a surprise that in the 21st century, it's quite impossible to avoid Chinese media, it's worth learning Mandarin just to enjoy these pieces of art in their original language.
On a political level, however, speaking as a leftist, I find it important to critically support the PRC and uate the CCP's actions, to do that though, getting to actually understand the Chinese people's way of thought is crucial. Analyzing Maoist thinking and comparing it to European style Marxist thought is quite interesting and although I'm more skeptical about Dengism, it's still a major part of the modern Chinese state and deserves a fair bit of reading into. I believe, as the major socialist power in the world, learning Chinese is useful for any leftist interested in the state of 21st century communism.
On a more personal note, it's also quite a joy to learn about another culture for me, especially since China is highly multifarious in terms of cultural and linguistic diversity along with its grand history. I feel like I could read about the Han sub-groups and never get bored, getting a better understanding of Chinese civilization is undoubtedly important, albeit difficult. Cheers!

The story of how I first began learning Mandarin Chinese is a bit peculiar.
I had read a study about London taxi drivers, and how their brains physically changed after learning the spatial map of London in their heads (London is a complicated layout).
I began thinking about different ways I could exercise my brain and get out of my “comfort zone”. I imagined that after college my brain basically dug its way into the couch of my head and got lazy. I wanted to whip it back into shape and challenge it in a new way. A friend of mine recommended Chinese. Mandarin Chinese actually changes the way different parts of your brain function, and for the better!
The pictoral writing system and speaking tones will improve your overall mental health and capacity.
我开始学习普通话的经历有点奇怪。
我曾经读过一篇关于伦敦出租车司机的研究，以及他们在大脑了解了伦敦的空间地图后大脑的物理变化(伦敦的布局很复杂)。

I was up for the challenge. It wasn’t until just after I looked into Chinese that I realized all of the other benefits beyond stimulating my brain.
There are other great reasons to learn Mandarin Chinese:
As an investment for your future and career that points you in the direction of China. Economic momentum over the past decades has shifted to East Asia, driven by the meteoric rise of the Chinese economy.
As business and infrastructure in China has risen, seemingly overnight, opportunities for foreigners working in China, or working in conjunction with Chinese companies, has also risen dramatically. Many of us foreign workers today find that we now have more opportunity on the other side of the Pacific!
Not all foreign workers in China speak much Chinese, and not all jobs require a fluent level of Mandarin Chinese skill to be qualified. However, this doesn’t mean that studying Chinese isn’t necessary. Having even a basic understanding of Chinese shows that you are committed to China for business and personal purposes
Opens doors to a fascinating 5,000-year-old culture
There’s no better language to learn if you are a native English speaker like me, and no better time to begin learning it than now.
我准备接受挑战。直到我开始学习中文之后，我才意识到除了刺激我的大脑之外还有其他的好处。
学习汉语还有其他的原因:
作为对你未来和职业生涯的投资，为你指明了中国的方向。在中国经济迅速崛起的推动下，过去几十年的经济势头已转向东亚。

I’m an older guy and Mandarin self-learner. I learn Mandarin using audiobooks of Pimsleur method. I also learn reading and writing Simplified Chinese characters, but just the printed ones not the hand writing. I got familiar with pinyin that helped me to type characters on my iMac.
I can confirm the state above. My brain have been reset by Mandarin and I can think in different ways and more effectively as I did before. Learning Mandarin is a good idea even for an older person. I fully recommend that.

I think it only works for non native speakers or just for you.as a native I never feel getting smarter by learning Mandarin.maybe it is the different/exotic culture thing makes benifits to your brain and that can compare to the map-to-driver thing

I started studying Chinese, because the company I worked for at the time sent me on a business trip to Nanjing, and it was the first time in my life that blustering my way through in English didn't really work out that well. While the formal meeting was in English, the side conversations were all in Chinese. That made learning Chinese seem like an interesting and useful challenge.
I continue to study Chinese, because sometimes truth is more interesting than fiction. Here is another civilization with about the same length of history as Europe, that still thrives to this day. We don't learn much about Chinese anything when we are in school. So, studying Chinese opens up whole new worlds, of history, intellectual traditions, social conventions, people I can talk to, etc. I suppose I could read a fantasy novel and get a similar feeling, but this is much more variegated than any single mind, or book could produce, and most of the story is not available in English.
我开始学习中文，因为我当时工作的公司派我去南京出差，这是我人生中第一次用英语拼命工作，结果却不理想。虽然正式会议用的是英语，但会谈都是用中文进行的。这使得学习中文看起来像是一个有趣而有用的挑战。

I have had an interest in learning Mandarin since I was about fifteen but I put it off because, like you, I heard it was one of the most difficult languages to learn.
I've been learning on my own for about a year now. I'm really very far from fluent but I have been pleasantly surprised by the elegant simplicity of the grammar and syntax. Pronunciation can be difficult but I have found it to be about ten times more simple than French. I don't have a huge amount of trouble when typing in Chinese if I can use Pinyin and I can remember the characters well enough to read them providing I already learned the word.
I think what I have found most difficult is adjusting my ear to understand the very foreign singsong sounds of the Chinese language as words. Now that I recognize the language I get feelings of euphoria when I realize that I am understanding what I hear. And while I can remember characters well enough to recognize them when I see them, I have trouble recalling them well enough to write them by hand.
I think the following sums up succinctly why I love Chinese. It is fun and exciting. It provides a challenge; I feel good about what I have learned when I reflect on my progress. And most of all, studying Chinese provides an avenue to understanding different ways of living. Through studying another language I gain a deeper perspective of the world we all live in.
我从大约15岁起就对学习汉语普通话产生了兴趣，但我推迟了学习，因为和你一样，我听说汉语普通话是最难学的语言之一。

I think the following sums up succinctly why I love Chinese. It is fun and exciting. It provides a challenge; I feel good about what I have learned when I reflect on my progress. And most of all, studying Chinese provides an avenue to understanding different ways of living. Through studying another language I gain a deeper perspective of the world we all live in.

I would really like to learn Mandarin because it's something different, I also really like Chinese culture and history and would like to go there oneday, other people might just want to learn it for practical reasons maybe, but you don't really need a reason to want to learn another language.
I think Chinese characters look nice too, but I never understood how they work, and besides that, you will have alot of bragging rights if you learn it.
In short, my reasons why I would like to learn Mandarin are:

I live in China. I think one of the reason to this phenomenon would be that more people around the world go to China nowadays, foreigners in China are usually warm welcomed by Chinese native people, and those who can speak some Mandarin Chinese would become fairly popular among their Chinese friends.
If a foreigner could be fluent in Mandarin, he/she could even be a star with a lot of fans in China. For example, you can check out the Chinese website [1] which is similar to Quora. An American user has a lot of fans there, who gave plenty of good answers in Chinese. He is not alone, a French user [2] is also popular there.
Besides, maybe we can look this question in another way, why so many Chinese people is keen on learning English at this stage, and many of them was keen on learning Russian 60 years ago? The answer would be similar to the above question.

If I decide to make more time to study Chinese, it would be more to build a closer relationship with family, rather than professional development reasons.
While my family is bilingual in both English and Chinese, there are words & phrases in English that have completely different cultural connotations, in the mental maps of native Chinese speakers.
This causes for a lot of communication barriers, where the intent of the original message in English does not directly translate in Chinese.
This especially can be a challenge if you are discussing matters such as family, career, academics, lifestyle, etc., where Chinese cultural values already differ from American cultural values.
Thus, I want to make sure the intent of the message is communicated more than the literal translation to minimize those communication gaps.
My approach would to identify the vocabulary or terminology relevant to the topic/discussion at hand, and make sure that I am communicating the topics in Chinese correctly by going on a Chinese-speaking forum (i.e. Douban).
如果我决定花更多的时间学习中文，更多的是为了和家人建立更紧密的关系，而不是职业发展的原因。

I've been studying Chinese since middle school. I study it for several reasons. One, Chinese is one of the most commonly spoken languages and China is a key global power, so knowledge of the language could become handy. Two, although the characters are challenging, the grammar is fairly (disclaimer: not very very) intuitive, and the language itself is beautiful. The tones, the characters, the history... Three, which I already alluded to, is that Chinese language is relatively connected to the culture and history compared to other languages, at least as far as I can tell, so it's very interesting to also study China in general. Four . . . . People usually think it's impressive.
The main reason, though, is that I find the language fascinating, especially because in many ways it is so different from English.

6. Philosophy:
So you know all about Aristoteles and Kant? Get to know Confucius who was one of the most influential thought leader in the world. Or try implementing the strategies describes in Sunzi's "the art of war" the next time you are having trouble with colleagues, parents or your pet.
7. Language:
Yes, this one might sound a little bit paradox, but one of the best reasons for learning Chinese is the language itself. Besides being more or less unique in the vast pool of languages, it is actually not that difficult. Apart from the characters (where we have a solution for you), the grammar is really simple and even the pronunciation is managable with some practice.

And no where in the world is dining as social as in China: Your first try at Ma La Xiang Guo will probably be unforgettable not only because of the taste.

Besides being more or less unique in the vast pool of languages, it is actually not that difficult.
