I am answering as an American.
When I think of, or watch the Queen, I see the past, present, and future of the UK. I see a woman who was out working besides her future subjects during the years of WWII. I see a woman who has served her country longer than any other monarch. I see a woman who has visited more places than any other monarch. I see a woman who has put her country first many times when the rest of us wouldn’t have. I see a woman whom I trust as much as family, and who got me interested in visiting a country far away from my own.
My life is better because of Elizabeth II.

When you were 21, on your birthday, did you turn to your friends, and family members and say anything REMOTELY similar to this:
“My whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family.”
This is what Her Majesty said, and has lived up to.
Imagine your life, and the life of your entire family being exposed to the public on a daily basis. Imagine not being able to mourn the death of your husband, or any family member, in private….
When your son ‘acts out’ as a teen, does it hit the front page of the paper? How about when he got seen smoking a joint?
When you flatulate, is there a headline in the national papers that say “So and so passed gas, family is aghast’
One of the reasons she’s so loved is that her bearing and demeanor hasn’t changed one iota. She doesn’t toss temper tantrums in public, she doesn’t lie to her subjects, she doesn’t embarrass her government, her people or her country.
Her biggest gaffe was in the Royal’s initial handling of the death of Dianna, Princess of Wales, and she recovered from that quite nicely. One statement… “So what I say to you now, as your Queen and as a grandmother, I say from my heart.” put everything back into perspective.
When she has been the brunt of a joke… and here I refer to the “talking hat” incident in the U.S. when the podium was too high, she has shown the ‘lighter side’ of her demeanor. For those who don’t follow the Queen closely, her opening comment the next day when she addressed Congress, was, “I do hope you can all see me from where you are.” This ‘brought the house down’ and a very long standing ovation. No temper tantrum, no accusations, no media comments. Just her way of saying, “Well, s**t happens.”
She has borne the burden of the Crown for over 7 decades.
In an age of world leaders who tweet insults constantly, threaten other countries relentlessly, demean opponents with crude and caustic remarks, she has stood out as the epitome of national representation.
When we say “God Save The Queen” -we mean it.

She epitomises what it is to be the best of British. Your thoughtful words Mary are appreciated.
God Save the Queen

Thank you for such a clear and concise answer. I, too, as a U.S. citizen, feel that the world is a safer place when people such as QE II are in places of power. Not people who expect to be respected just because of the family they were born into, but people who consider themselves to be the servants of their people and countries. It will be a great loss to the entire world when she goes.

I agree with you one hundred percent Mary. I, as a fellow American, admire Queen Elizabeth so much. She has so much class and respect for others and she is a role model that I have looked up to all of my life. My dream is to go to England one day.

That’s a beautiful piece Mary.
I adore our Queen. Really adore her. Like Prince Philip, her majesty’s life has been a full and productive life. Productive for all the good she’s done for our country. At 95 years old she is still serving her country when her subjects would have retired 30 years earlier. Her life has been an interesting one, with many downs as well as ups.
From learning to be a mechanic in WW2, to her describing the best night of her life when she anonymously joined the crowds in trafalger square on D day. Laughing, singing and dancing with complete strangers, and getting swept up with the crowd. Her one night of freedom, as a young princess where she experienced the joy that the rest of the country was experiencing.
This woman is so special that even the republicans in our country have nothing but admiration for her. She will be a hard act to follow, and I can honestly say that I, and the entire population of the UK dreads the day our beautiful Queen is no longer with us.

What has she done?
What has she not done!
As soon as the news of her fathers passing arrived, she immediately put duty before personal needs, and well done she did it all

I would add a few other reasons Queen Elizabeth II is so loved by all Brits, even those who would like to abolish the monarchy. The first of these was mentioned in an article I read though I cannot recall who noted this. The author noted that Queen Elizabeth II is so loved by her countrymen and women because she has not said anything in all of her speeches or even casually slipped up that would offend anyone and she has not said a word about anything that could be the least bit controversial. She also pays lots of bills instead of seeking more public funds for staff and for managing her many homes and the estates they sit on. Last, she has demonstrated an inner strength on a number of occasions including the deaths of four of the most important people in her life - her father, her mother, her sister, and most recently, her husband. And that is exactly the point. She knows how to be silent on matters of state and matters that most of her subjects and all of her politicians have opinions on and on all other topics that people opine on without giving it a thought. I would add to this: Queen Elizabeth II is also modest and never even suggests or implies that she seeks adoration or approval. She also knows how to bring people together and comfort people when times are difficult. And for these reasons and the comments previously stated, she is the perfect monarch for our times.

I still don’t think her work is such a big deal. It requires only moderate senior executive skills and she is amply rewarded for it. Her workplace conditions are probably the best of anyone anywhere ever. You sycophant monarchists are determined to make a hero out of her. Many capable women hold down much more difficult executive jobs today.

Could I enquire Mary, how has Elizabeth made your life better?
It's a genuine question, mainly because I didn't expect that answer from outside of the Commonwealth. And especially from an American. I'm not trying to ridicule you.

Yes, the Queen has fulfilled her Coronation promises to God and to her People. She has set a marvellous example. I am nearly 87 years old myself so I can speak with experience of her dedication.

Thank you kindly from me too. Monarchy may not be everybody’s political cup of tea, but through Her Majesty and Prince Philip, it has served us famously. Id like to hope there are many others around the globe who feel the same.
Despite the awful way many of our politicians have behaved (I know, some have been great), we have had the shining example of someone prepared to devote life and energy to the service of the people. If that doesn’t make every body proud, it certainly does me.

Thank you! I am British and pro manarchy.
In this day and age we all need someone to look up to.
If you elect someone, you don't look up to him - you hire him to do a job!
Hero worship?
I'm not into that but like most folk, there are people I look up to and respect because they are better than me and the wuern I'd one such person. She's wonderful!!!

Bernadette Mary Sassen
she has been true to herself and the country and commonwealth never putting herself above and before what her calling as Monarch needs to be

The UK went through extraordinary problems postwar, it is likely that the Queen personally and her position helped moderate extreme excursions in government and culture. Either way , she has done her duty for the nation like the many soldiers did their duty despite hardships, injuries or death. She deserves the respect, she earned it.

As a fellow American, I agree with you 100%. I greatly admire her for what she has done throughout her reign. More people should follow her example. I have only been to England once many years ago. I hope I can get back there one day.

Love is a strong word, but most of us have a lot of respect for the old dear. She is tough as old boots, but dresses up her toughness in a silk glove.
She served as a mechanic during the war. That alone grants her a level of respect in Britain as part of the ‘greatest generation’. She was then thrust into being monarch unexpectedly at a young age by the death of her father. Without complaint she took up the burden of the Crown and tried to manage the impossible task of keeping things on an even keel despite having no real power herself.
She is necessarily apolitical, but she has a quiet sense of purpose about trying to nudge the world into being a better place. When she entertained the King of Saudi Arabia she made a point of driving him around the Balmoral estate personally so that she could - without saying anything improper - quietly make the point that there is nothing wrong with a woman driving a car.
She is now an old woman in her 90s. But whilst people like the Pope might think they are too old and tired for their duties and retire from public office, she plods doggedly on with an indefatigable sense of duty.
Not everyone loves her. But virtually everyone respects her. We’ve had plenty of crap monarchs over the last 1,000 years. She isn’t one of them.

As an American, God Save the Queen!

Steven Rusling
Indeed. It puts those who are by inclination republican, like myself, in a difficult position.
I have the utmost respect for the Queen, not because she is the monarch but because of the woman she is and how she has comported herself for the last sixty odd years in a role she did not choose. As monarchs go she has been remarkable for all the right reasons. She will, eventually, prove a hard act to follow.
My view on the institution of monarchy is rather less benign.
The dilemma is separating the two.

My view is that it is better than the alternatives.
If we are going to have a ceremonial function for our head of state then lets have a ceremonial head of state and a separate political head of state to do the day to day work and concentrate on doing that job.
Having one person do both functions just reduces time available to manage the day to day running of the country.
Once you decide that a ceremonial head of state is what you need for all the state visits etc then the obvious decision is to avoid electing them because it saves you a lot of money in the long run. Having a monarch or a president means forking out a lot of money for looking after them while they do their job and with elected ones you have to keep paying to look after the retired ones.
Better to have a family who get trained to do the job of representing the country while having no executive power.
Finally while you can have great elected presidents who do have executive power you can also have terrible ones (plus you require then to split their duties between wielding executive power and doing the PR side).
Essentially the current system works very well so don’t replace it with a system we know does not work as well.

Arthur Majoor
Her Majesty also receives weekly briefings from the Prime Minister. Although she is apolitical, she has seen and interacted with every Prime Minister since 1952, so when she speaks to the PM she can offer a great deal of experience and corporate knowledge. If the PM chooses to take the Queen’s advice is another matter altogether.

Guillaume Regis
To be honest Colin, the affection many people in Britain and to a lesser extent have for the Queen is love no matter how we want to downplay it. When the inevitable happens, we will see an outpouring of grief in this country on a scale I personally dread. For those of us that have lost loved ones, the grief will be more or less the same. Hardly anyone under the age of 75 in the UK will remember the previous monarch. The Queen represents stability and normality, just like the BBC we always expect it to be there. When Diana died, we were not as uncertain as a country as we're now in my opinion most of what connected us to the past seems to be in flux. Also finally and especially for practising Anglicans like me, the Queen is our anointed spiritual representative not unlike the Pope.

William Winston
My mother had great deal of respect for her. (as did my father). When I was a youngster, she spoke frequently of the Queen, then a princess, and her WW2 service. She later attended the Virginia General Assembly’s reception for the Queen on her (1957) visit to Williamsburg and Jamestown for the 350th anniversary of the founding of the first Dominion in the new world. I remember visiting Jamestown as a student and reading the quote from the Queen’s speech on democracy (emblazoned on the facade of the Jamestown visitors center) from that visit as she spoke of the democratic values shared by and creating a bond among the English speaking counties of the world which trace their legal and political ideals from common law and Magna Carter. She has been an amazing world leader.
