As an European, I would say that all utensils have their place to shine with different foods, but would also agree that chopsticks are more efficient than a fork in general. This, because chopsticks can be used both for foods that are eaten with the fork usually and for the food that is hard to eat with fork, while the other way around is hard and messy.

That said and just to give a bit of laugh and horror to the good people under this question a little (I know it did to me), I personally witnessed a person picking up 小籠包 with a fork (by pushing the fork under the dumpling directly in the steamer), carrying it to the mouth and pushing it in, in one smooth move. No soup spoon used, no making a hole for the steaming soup to pour out and cool a bit. He was completely insensitive to the heat and proceeded to shovel the fork (that he just pulled out of his mouth), back into the steamer and pick another dumpling, repeating the process. Rest of us sat there in small shock (both to the lack of hygiene and resistance to heat), including (and especially) his wife who was from Shanghai, made the dumplings and of course knew how to eat them. He continued to eat unfazed and we all ate from the other two steamers, using the chopsticks and spoons. No one said the word to him and I doubt he noticed anything amiss.

I’ll admit that I’m one of those freaks (and yes there are a few of us out there) that eats pizza with chopsticks. I also sometimes eat chips this way. Even my Asian-American friends stare at me for doing that. It’s because I don’t want to get my fingers greasy. You eat xiaolongbao with chopsticks? Why not a spoon like in the image? Then you can get a bit of shredded ginger and some chili oil as a base for all that tasty “soup” when you pop it open. I have tried it both ways, but spoon seems more efficient. Some foods are way better with chop sticks though for sure!

Chopsticks clearly are better for picking up food without destroying it, as in the case of dumplings, however, I still do think that a modified form of them where they are joined at the back end, i.e. more like tongs would be more efficient and easy.

Can't you simply push the fork below? Not that you should, but this doesn't seem like a good reason. You could probably eat everything you eat with chopsticks with fork and knife. But why? I find chopsticks to be more fun and authentic for certain foods. And they're easy enough to use, especially after a lifetime of training.

People are making this so much more complicated than it needs to be, use chopsticks if your used to it and if you can’t be bothered using chopsticks or it’s just not your thing then use forks. Also I severely doubt people who don’t take any time to learn how to use chopsticks would bother to actually eat 小笼包’s correctly. Personally I use chopsticks for anything except soups and pasta, pasta is just so thick that it feels more natural to use a fork.

I find it much easier using chopsticks even for salad. I somehow have difficulties poking and holding foods with a fork. Steaks, yes I prefer using a fork but mostly I find the chopstiks more practical for me that is.

A fork should be more efficient when you try to eat a block of meat.
In chopstick countries, they barely eat anything you need to pierce and settle to eat as their traditional food.
There are steak houses in those countries of course and some people visit them from time to time, but they use forks there.
When you try to achieve two different things, what’s efficient is mostly different depending on the aimed achievement.

Chopsticks are more efficient than forks for the sorts of food typically served in eastern Asia, where chopsticks are used. Although these cuisines are incredibly varied, they all have food that can be eaten with chopsticks (and sometimes a spoon).
Also, some foods are eaten differently in different cultures. For instance, Italy, Japan, and China (among other countries) all have long thin noodles. The Italians twirl their spaghetti around a fork and put that in their mouths. That would be hard (but possible!) with chopsticks. But this is not how noodles are eaten in Asia.

Firstly, why is efficiency even a factor?
Are you at an eating competition?
Because if so, then the fork is most definitely NOT “clearly more efficient”.
Your HANDS are.
Nowhere in the history of eating competitions did the guy with the fork save more time than the guy who just shoved food into his face with his bare hands.
So why don’t you just slow down and enjoy your food, rather than obsess about how many seconds you can save with what you think is a superior tool?
However, if you’re adamant about this trivial “efficiency” battle between the fork and chopsticks, here’s why you’re wrong. In your head, you’ve cherry-picked a handful of contrived scenarios where a fork beats a pair of chopsticks, and therefore deluded yourself into believing it’s superior. But I can do the same thing, see:
Try picking out fish bones with a fork. By the time you’re done, your grilled fish is now stone cold.
Try eating individual peas with a fork. You’ll be stabbing at your plate for days.
Try eating tofu with a fork. Watch as the pieces get smaller and smaller because every time you stab a cube of tofu, the only thing that happens is that you cut it in half. By the time you give up, the pieces of tofu are so small that you might as well eat it with a spoon instead.
Try cleaning a fork and a pair of chopsticks, and tell me which one is faster.
Saying that forks are more efficient than chopsticks is like saying screwdrivers are more efficient than wrenches. “But for WHAT?” is the question that you need to ask yourself.

Clearly? If a fork were more efficient, there would be no reason for chopsticks. But your assumption is incorrect.
I can’t begin to think of how to pick up small pieces with a fork. The Italians eat noodles with a fork, and I can do it that way if I have to, but it’s so much easier with chopsticks.

It depends on what you are eating.
It is wrong to say that a fork is more efficient. Let's have a plate of spaghetti, you eat using fork and I use a pair chopsticks, chances are you will need to wipe your mouth many times while I can finish the plate of speghetti without needing to wipe my mouth at all if we are not eating in a hurry.
Whereas if we are having steak, knife is definitely needed to cut, then your fork would be ideal whilst it would be absurd to use chopsticks to try to hold the meat for cutting.
For a few decades I had stupidly used fork for my speghetti simply because that's how the Westerners do it. But, now, if eating at home, I will just use chopsticks instead of clumsy fork for my speghetti.
There are many Chinese food that fork is not practical at all.
Let's say, we have a plate/bowl of peanuts, with a pair chopsticks, I can comfortable pick to eat the peanuts. How are you going to eat peanuts with a fork(hands not allowed to touch the bowl/plate)? If you poke the peanuts it will most likely break. If you try to use the fork like a spoon, yes you will get to eat some of the peanuts but chances are you will donate quite a portion to the table or even the floor!
Next, let's have a bowl of fishballs soup. The fishballs would be floating in a the soup. My chopsticks could easily pick the fishballs one at a time. How are you going to poke the floating fishballs with your fork? For this fishball soup, your hands are allowed to hold the bowl. Not impossible if you intuitively push the fish balls to the side of the bowl in order to poke with your fork which is still a task especially with smooth slippery small fishballs but you probably get to eat 1 fishball after I already finished 5 fishballs with my chopsticks, without any of my hands touching the bowl. Plus, ooops! Some of your fishballs are on the table and floor if you tried to use the fork like a spoon with the fishballs.

I would say it depends on what you eat. Assuming one can handle chopsticks with relative ease, then for example a leafy sallad is much easier to eat with chopsticks than with a fork (with or without a knife to it). I also always eat dumplings with chopsticks.
On the other hand, chopsticks are hopelessly inefficient to use for a standard northern European dish consisting of, say, boiled potatoes, some sort of meat or fish pieces that need to be cut or divided on the plate, and then maybe some sauce or cream-like stuff on it, or next to it, or some small peas or other thing that just take too long to pick up one at the time with chopsticks. A fork in the left hand, and a knife in the right hand, to cut with, and to help move food onto the fork with, is the way to go there.
For spaghetti, the way to go is a large spoon in the left hand, and a fork in the right hand, and then rotate a suitable mouthpiece-sized spaghetti in the spoon with the fork.

For most White folks a fork is, much more efficient in getting food from plate to mouth. But forks are very late in being invented, probably late middle ages.
Chop sticks, go back about 5,000 years or so, they are readily manufactured for local grasses, like bamboo, 100% bio degradable, and once the skill is learned using them is actually very easy. Most Chinese infants learn very quickly. Probably why they have very good fine motor coordination.
Chop sticks have lots going for them, 100% green technology, zero carbon foot print, environmentally friendly, and completely recyclable !!!
Forks, not so much !!! Made of metal, save for plastic ones, metals must be mined, smelted, formed at high temperatures, require constant washing, and are not environmentally friendly.

Chopsticks are more versatile. There are all sorts of foods even in Western cuisines that are a pain to eat with a fork, but which chopsticks handle nicely.
Potato crisps, leafy salads, slippery cherry tomatoes, most pasta. Some of these are so bad you don’t ever use a fork on them (e.g. potato crisps). Others you just eat inefficiently (e.g. leafy salad).
Forks are only superior if you want to have good manners with your chopsticks and not stab meat or whatever with them while cutting with a knife; or when you kinda need a spoon, but hey, you have a fork, so you just use that. You can typically get a fair bit more tabouli or long-grain jasmine rice or corn kernels on a fork than on correctly-spaced chopsticks, and the fork is easier, too. (A spoon is even easier, if you have one at hand.)
And, as lots of other answers have mentioned, when chopsticks are common, you tend to get cuisine prepared with ease of eating with chopsticks in mind: rice is sticky, huge hunks of meat are cut into bite-sized pieces, etc.. But even without, I would usually rather have chopsticks.
For example, we got this weird nacho fries type thing as part of dinner tonight. With chopsticks I was able to eat it quickly and easily, while getting the toppings I wanted with each bite. I could have tried with a fork too, but it would have been slower, messier, and some of the fries probably would have been broken in half. Nachos, too—I guess you’re just supposed to get sour cream and salsa and stuff all over your fingers?! Ick.
Chopsticks are great utensils. The main downside is that they take a lot more work to learn how to use than a fork does.

I kinda think the “chopsticks are more suitable to Asian food/sharing” type of answer is reaching, but I also think the question was worded weirdly.
It’s worth noting that, in the same way Asians are never presented with just a single chopstick to eat food, westerners are not just equipped with a fork and expected to eat everything. It’s either fork and knife or fork, knife and spoon. Even if you take into the account the tradition of sharing, in China (and east Asia broadly), there’s usually a sharing spoon in the middle to scoop out certain dishes and bring them to your plate.
We start eating from the beginning of our existence and do so multiple times a day, but east Asian kids can’t learn to start eating with chopsticks until they’ve already been walking, talking and using spoons for two/three years (around 5–6 years old). Adding a fork doesn’t require any more teaching and allows them to pick up all the same things chopsticks do.
Cutlery is much more efficient than chopsticks which persist largely because of culture rather than convenience/efficiency. This should be most evident in the fact that the only countries chopsticks persist as a common eating utensil into the modern era are countries where absorbed large amounts of Chinese civilization/culture persist (i.e.-Japan, Korea, Vietnam and of course, China itself).
I do hand it to southeast Asians though. They use a fork and a spoon most of the time, which is undeniably the most efficient way to consume most food aside from just using your hands.

西方餐具比筷子更有效率,筷子的存在主要是因为文化而不是方便/效率。这在以下事实中应该是最明显的,即只有在吸收了大量中国文明/文化的国家,筷子才会作为一种常见的食具持续到现代(即日本、韩国、越南,当然还有中国本身)。
不过我还是要向东南亚人致敬。他们大部分时间都使用叉子和勺子,这无疑是除了用手之外食用大多数食物的最有效方式。

Man I have tried to, over an d over, figure out how to use chopsticks. I either cannot do it, am unwilling to invest the time to learn how to do it, or a combination thereof.
That said may I ask if the purpose of eating should be efficiency? I mean if that is the case why don’t we make everything into some type of hand-held or finger food? I would argue that efficiency, when eating, should not be the goal.

说到这里,我想问一下,吃饭的目的是否应该是提高效率?我的意思是,如果是这样的话,为什么我们不把所有的东西都做成某种类型的手提式或手指式食物?我认为,吃饭时,效率不应该是目标。
