It likely means sinking every single penny you can scrape together and living in what would politely be called poverty for years until the business is successful enough to actually pay you a wage. I started at 24 and I paid myself minimum wage till I was about 40. My husband was a bit more successful he started his business at 35 when he got his doctorate and by the time he was 47 he could increase his wage above minimum wage. I have been in business now for roughly 48–49 years, I now make a nice income and the business is doing very well but it takes time, hard work, patience, and the ability to defer gratification. You have to literally be willing to live on almost nothing for a lot longer than you think.

Throughout Oprah’s rise to fame, she has had a lifetime battle, played out publicly.
"I was raped at 9 years old by a cousin, then again by another family member, and another family member," Oprah has said. As a result of the abuse, she was pregnant with a baby son at 14, who she lost.
"I went back to school, and nobody knew. Because had anybody known at that time, I wouldn't have been able to be head of the student council, I wouldn't have been chosen as one of the two teenagers in the state of Tennessee to go to the White House conference on youth. None of those things would have happened, and the entire trajectory of my life would have been different.”

I made mistakes at a lot higher rate than I do now. More rework and do-overs. More agonizing over the right path or just plunging ahead without a clear view of the big picture. Plus the occasional really dumb idea pursued with vigor.
Of course, now I sometimes forget why I went to the tool chest and which tool I wanted!

You know how to handle people much better. You've met more people, had more relationships, seen more stupid Human tricks, etc.
You know more about the value of money. And time.

Did I mention that your experience is a great filter for stupid ideas?
You become more efficient overall. It hurts a bit to bend over and pick up that box. So you build a shelf so you don't have to! This pays off in more ways than just a chiropractor bill.
Your energy is more directed and focused.

After working for 30 years in the optical industry, Rand Smith decided to go into business on his own with a trusted partner, his wife, Janeel. These over-50 entrepreneurs turned their passions into second careers and couldn’t be happier. For those dreaming of turning a hobby into a living, or longing to be their own boss after years of working for others, a second career as an entrepreneur be a viable solution.
Those with ambition and drive to start a business but lacking a pile of money should not become discouraged. Startup capital can be raised in a variety of ways. Small Business Administration-backed bank loans are a good place for new business owners to start. Not all entrepreneurs will be approved, however. Those unable to raise sufficient funds should be wary of taking on debt and instead might consider alternative financing.

What field/industry are you looking to enter? Overall is it a successful and growing industry or is it a declining industry? is the market a monopoly, oligopoly etc.? Think about these things and focus on competition, now I don't mean rivals I mean the businesses surrounding you… what are they doing right? what are they doing wrong?

Starting a business can be scary. People often look for excuses. Am I too old. Am I too young. Maybe I should save more money first. Do I have the knowledge.
