A decade or two ago, people left India for the USA in search of a better life. For most, this meant a high paying and fast growing career that will help secure the future of their middle class family. It also meant the opportunity to work on challenging problems, innovative solutions and have impact at scale. All of these things are now the status quo in the Indian tech sector. Yet, people are still leaving. Why?
I feel there are three main reasons why candidates still choose to move to the USA:
Meritocracy is valued. If you work hard and deliver results consistently, you will grow. It’s that simple.
People mind their own business. Nobody interferes in your personal life or your choices. Boundaries are respected.
People typically have a growth mindset. Rather than trying to pull each other down, people realize that success is not a zero sum game and that if we help each other grow and pull each other up, there’s a significantly upside to it for all.

Sure there are other factors like better research facilities, consistently standard infrastructure, a fairly high standard of living; the list goes on. But I feel these are more the “nice-to-haves” rather than the primary drivers of the “brain-drain”.
There is also a tremendous amount of toil and sacrifice that comes with this choice that often gets overlooked and under-appreciated.
The visa struggle is real. For most Indians, the H1B lottery and the 3 year renewal is a very stressful time and there’s a constantly hanging sword over our heads that life as we know it could simply get uprooted and change on a dime. This also brings severe restrictions on what we can and cannot pursue outside of our day jobs.
Being away from family is emotionally taxing. As our parents grow older and start to experience health and wellbeing concerns, it’s painful to be half a planet away and not rush to their side when they need us. We lie to ourselves every night about why the tradeoff makes pragmatic sense but deep down we wish more than anything that we could have it both ways.
Life can get quite lonely at times for those who don’t make a consistent and conscious effort to build a strong and reliable network of friends and family.

Mythbusters and myth confirmed for reasons of braindrain in India.
In India, since late 1990's people started going abroad to study or to work. But ratio was quite narrow, hardly 1 out of 200 or 300 used to go abroad. But as we come closer to late 2020's, we can see every Ramesh, Suresh and Ravi going to Canada/USA/UK, etc. But anyone noticed why this braindrain is happening? After reading few articles on quora and other sites, I shortlisted some possible reasons of why this braindrain is happening. Some reasons are just superficial and nothing much to do with reality. We will see some of these reasons:

In India, since late 1990's people started going abroad to study or to work. But ratio was quite narrow, hardly 1 out of 200 or 300 used to go abroad. As, for top government colleges, like IITs, or NITs there is huge reservation, most intelligent students go to study abroad. This still doesn't answer the issue fully. We see few dumb and fool people who can't do anything in India, so flying to USA with dad's money. Myth confirmed partially.
Politics: frankly speaking, politics is by not any angle looks like a reason for people to quit India. Let it be Modi/Yogi/Rahul anyone. If a person is capable to be successful in life, he can fulfill in India too. And who says US/UK don't play politics? Rather people pay much more taxes there. Myth Busted.
Freedom and good lifestyle: remember earlier days, how our family lived together in town, people around, living happy life. Nowadays people want foreign lifestyles. Don't want anyone around, live your life in heaters/ACs with no people around, paying 10* tax to govt than they used to in India. This change of good lifestyle has changed, also has a reason, we'll talk later on this. Myth Busted.

More attraction to foreign lifestyle: completely true, people started hating Indian lifestyle and started loving foreign's. Average Indian have started enjoying new year, halloween and christmas which most people don't know about it. And for Diwali/holi/gudi padwa, etc. people think its overrated. Myth confirmed.
India don't have jobs: most stupid and baseless reason. If you have talent, you will surely get good jobs staying in India with better lifestyle than abroad. No one can stop you if you showcase your talent. Myth Busted.
Typical poor mentality: 80% people in India promote students to study, take degree, and do job, buy a house/car, pay bills for it next 20 years struggle your life working for money and retire. If someone dont get a job, people try going abroad to study and get job there. Means nonetheless, people end up doing ‘job’. Many people don't try something different, like starting some business, entrepreneurship, or doing something out of passion.
English movies and Netflix: Wait, what? Really? You might think, where is this even going. That's where the root is. Watching TV shows and movies based in USA, Europe is the main root cause why we started liking their culture. Not only that much, abusing Indian characters in English movies and shows is also observed. This created the main attraction of going abroad. You know, where you spend most of the time with, the more likely you become or want to become. Myth Confirmed
(Cont'd to last point) Comparison: this is also one of the reason of parents sending their child to study abroad. It is the typical Indian mentality that we compare almost everything. I live in Pune, and I can relate with this comparison everywhere, especially ‘Kothrud’ aka mini US/Germany here. One guy goes to US, then their neighbors, and relatives also wish to go US, and again he/she goes, again his/her neighbors send their kids abroad to study to look cool and this cycle continues. Myth Confirmed.

Going abroad to study and earning money isn't bad, but we should come back instead of settling there. Firstly, we are human and Indians. Our parents supported us, made us stand on our foot, made us independent, thinking that, after our oldage, our children can take care of them. If we quit the country, then who will take care of our parents? Consequences are, 50–60% old parents are living alone without any support. If the country has problems, our job is to find solutions to minimize them, and not to find escapes which most people do. Please think on it.

Brain drain is one of the biggest problems India is facing to be a developed country. How can a country develop when the best minds from that country tend to move to other countries? My friend, this is the [math]21^{st}[/math] century, the era of globalization. We are all free to go and live in any country we want, that is our legal right.
The problem is with the policies and mindset of India. Allow me to explain. Driving in India is such a difficult thing, because you have to keep an eye for the traffic approaching you from front, on a one way road. You have to keep an eye to your left and right before crossing a road that is regulated by traffic lights. You can’t keep a decent gap between your car and that in front of you, as 4–5 two wheeler vehicles will fill that gap. Wow!

Brain drain is one of the biggest problems India is facing to be a developed country. How can a country develop when the best minds from that country tend to move to other countries? My friend, this is the [math]21^{st}[/math] century, the era of globalization. We are all free to go and live in any country we want, that is our legal right.
The problem is with the policies and mindset of India. Allow me to explain. Driving in India is such a difficult thing, because you have to keep an eye for the traffic approaching you from front, on a one way road. You have to keep an eye to your left and right before crossing a road that is regulated by traffic lights. You can’t keep a decent gap between your car and that in front of you, as 4–5 two wheeler vehicles will fill that gap. Wow!

People in India are always in a hurry but are never on time. Simply because they keep no buffer. It takes 30 minutes to reach my office from home, I have to reach by 10:00AM, so I will leave at 9:30AM. WTF! India is used to nuisance. Till you don’t see some garbage thrown around you, till you don’t see some people abusing, you will not feel home like! India is the place where you prove your patriotism by singing the national anthem and not by actually doing something. India is the place where words are valued more than actions. India does NOT learn from past experiences. India is still resistant to any major changes. India is the only place where people fight to be declared backward. India is the place where you display your agitation against the lack of public transport by burning public transport. Where you show your resolution to fight pollution by shouting. Where doing is not important, candle marches are.
This is not my dreamland for sure, this is not the India which I can be proud to be a citizen of. I cannot live a decent lifestyle, because people will assume I am corrupt. Not every rich is corrupt, and people can’t digest that. People are unable to digest someone else’s success.

India is too populated. There are so many hidden expenses. Systems lack transparency. You don’t vote for the best among good, you vote for the tolerable among bad. You vote for the least corrupt among the corrupt. And that if you vote, which is again rare. In India, understanding the other’s point of view and changing the decision is considered cowardice. In India, you have to support your friend even if he is wrong, because he is your friend. Amazing!
I am also looking for the first opportunity to run out of India. India is the land of fake promises. I am against this. I want less promises, but they must be delivered. I don’t know if any country has to offer what I want. But maybe I find some which is closer to my dreamland than India.
The day India is ready to progress and develop, I can assure you I will be the first one ready to help. But, India is not willing to change. India is happy, I am not. I see development above earning money. I want the India with a 100% voter turnout. I want the India that believes in it’s decisions. The day this comes, no authority can stop India from developing. it is the era of survival of the fittest! and people keep exploring the place where they fit in.
Our country is like an auditorium 1, the government the play artists, the seats are for the people of the country.
the play artists do not care if the auditorium is filled or not. They just want to run the show for name sake and the seats are reserved and blocked. They do not allow any other person to replace the seat even if the seat is unoccupied.
so when they left out people are welcome in auditorium 2 and are also given a chance to volunteer themselves in the play , the deserved ones wont wait long and will show their back and walk off.
At the end of the day, when the amount collected at the ticket gate is counted they realise that it is not even enough to pay the electricity bill!.
still no lesson learnt. The same trend continuous the next day!. but the difference is , the seats were blocked for Tom's father yesterday, and it is blocked for Tom today and tomorrow it will be blocked for Tom's son, who eventually will get bored of the same play here and will move to auditorium 2.

To leave a job to get into something better is very risky as you can be replaced easily but finding an equivalent job is not easy.
Hence, brain drain is part and parcel of life of an average Indian.
