In addition, we can also shorthand it to speed up, and it looks like this…
In the meantime, there are a number of advantages of Chinese characters that other languages usually don’t have:
it is beautiful, in its shape and meaning. The Chinese writing system also has far greater aesthetic interest than simple scxts.
it is very economical, taking less space to express the same meanings (generally 600~700 Chinese characters = 1500~1700 English words)
it usually contains the wisdom of how people understand the concept.
it usually has both visual and sound components, which is good for the development of human brains, and some of the world-famous private schools in the west take Chinese as the compulsory course to learn at an early age.
it has successfully avoided the problems of dialects. It easily surmounts differences of dialect or even more fundamental linguistic barriers. All literate Chinese, even if they speak mutually unintelligible "dialects," can read the same books and feel that classical written Chinese is their own language. If they had had a phonetic system of writing they might have broken up into separate national groups, as did the Italians, French, Spanish, and Portuguese.
it is very cool!
Of course, there is more to it, but I think that’s enough for now.

When I was young in Hong Kong, I got my hand sore whenever I finished writing my Chinese calligraphic dictation of long passage in very limited time at school. According to nowaday standard of teaching, that past dictation practice was in fact a serious physical torture.

, Read every day
This actually made me laugh out loud.
First I wondered, sarcastically, to no one in particular, What are we going to write Chinese in? Cyrillic?
Then I asked, rhetorically and even more sarcastically (but not aloud), Do English speakers get tired of writing all their letters in English letters?
Finally I just thought to myself, Eh, both English and Chinese are a lot faster now that I mostly use dictation to “type” things out. I guess that’s less “tiring.”
Don’t know if that answers your question, but it does provide information of a sort.
这个问题差点让我笑出声来。
首先我讽刺地想,不然我们要用什么来写中文?西里尔语?
然后我想反问,甚至是更讽刺地问(但不是大声地问):说英语的人对用英语字母来写所有的单词会不会感到厌倦?
最后我就想,诶,现在英语和汉语都快多了,现在都是“打”字了。我想这就没那么"累"了。
不知道这是否回答了你的问题,但它确实提供了某种信息。

因为汉字是二维的,而字母文字是一维的。

Because Chinese characters are two-dimensional and alphabetic letters are one-dimensional.
所以实际上,写汉字可以在更少的空间内放下更多的内容。

So in fact, writing Chinese characters allows you to put more content in less space.
通常情况下,写一个汉字或英文字母都只需要移动手指,而为了保留足够区分字符的间隙,写下一个之前需要移动手腕。

In general, writing a single Chinese character or English letter requires only the movement of fingers, whereas you need to move the wrist in order to retain enough space to distinguish between characters.

Moving your fingers is easier than moving your wrist.
也就是说,笔画多但字数少,写起来应该比反之更加省力。

By comparing the length of the sentences above, you can see which is shorter, that is to say, which costs less effort.

Note that a Chinese character takes up the space of two or more English letters to display on the screen, so the actual number of characters in a Chinese sentence is much less than it looks above.
当然,这是一种极端简化的分析,没有考虑中英文本身的一些特性,如缩写、省略等。

Of course, this is an extremely simplistic analysis that does not take into account some of the characteristics of Chinese and English themselves, such as abbreviation, ellipsis and so on.
但总体而言,虽然不能成为定量结论,作为定性分析还是比较直观的。

But overall, although it can not be a quantitative conclusion, as a qualitative analysis it is still intuitive.

Each Chinese character is a full word, and there is no correlation between how a character looks and how it’s pronounced; this means that Chinese characters can be used for writing *any* language!

In theory, yes, and that’s what ancient Japanese did. They used Chinese characters to represent the pronunciation of their own language. When I saw ancient scxts in Kyoto, I can read every character but they don’t make sense together in Chinese.
However, this feature contributes to the weird pronunciation when a Chinese or Japanese speaks English or other phonetic languages. We have a particular difficulty in adapting to word stress rules and so on.

然而,当一个中国人或日本人说英语或其他拼音语言时,这一特点促成了奇怪的发音。我们在适应单词重音规则等方面有特殊的困难。

In most situation, every Chinese character was a word in Classical Chinese and is a morpheme today, but not really a word in modern vernacular Chinese, because modern vernacular Chinese mainly consists disyllabic words, where a disyllabic word is likely to be made up from two morphemes, which were two synonymous words from Classical Chinese.
For example,
Classical Chinese: 锋 means “sharp”, and 利 also means “sharp”.

I really like the Chinese language, although as a foreigner I must admit I most certainly fall short when it comes to appreciating it in all of its profoundness and intricacies.
In reading, I prefer Chinese. For the reasons you listed above: brevity. Less space needed for more content. Plus points for aesthetics. Western (namely latin) alphabet is simple to learn, use, and is practical. But when it comes to visual appeal it goes without saying who the winner is. Love both versions, the simplified (简体) or traditional (繁体). Although all of them, at least in pixelated forms, have rigid appearances already agreed on. But paper leaves space for freedom ;)

In writing, or typing at least, however, I prefer the Western keyboards/languages. For one simple reason. Autocorrect and word autocomplete/suggestions. Chinese just has… So many characters. That is good of a language, it gives it greater flexibility and increases its expressiveness (expression ability). And while it's admirable, it's also very hard to deal with. Because the standard most common input method is pinyin, which doesn't differentiate between tones. On one hand this is practical, because it sounds like a lot of tedious work always having to specify a tone for any given syllable every time, but on the other hand it could potentially cut down your incoming workload of having to search through the results of pinyin, but not also tonal matches. Not to mention more common words of keyboard proximity, which are also thrown into the suggestions mix.
Also a consequence of having many similar pinyin matches is that sometimes you'll have a harder time looking for a character, especially if it's one of the less commonly used ones. And sometimes you won't find your desired character at all, making you try a few similarly sounding spellings... This is particularly true for certain names. Which 'Chen' are you again? I'm gonna have to scroll down about 5 pages to get to you. It was #xxx last time. Although in such cases the drawing option is usually faster. I will normally try to use it for less common characters. But, being a foreigner and all, I am very underpracticed in this skill. Since I communicate in Chinese mostly online and through the phone, typing is the way to go. I've never formally practiced writing actual Chinese, apart from some wishcards and similar short text messages that I (took pictures of and) sent to my friends. And even those took me a while because my god do I suck at writing Chinese.
And finally there's the fact that once the pinyin to character conversion is complete, or the characters are pasted on you and your recipient's screens, the original pinyin input is lost. That's why, in some cases of mistypings, where not only the characters will deviate from the ones intended but also the pinyin spelling of those characters, it is sometimes hard for the recipient party to get the meaning trying to be communicated, and sometimes they may get the wrong idea altogether. In English and other latin alphabet using countries this problem doesn't exist because usually the wrong spelling of a letter or two doesn't affect the rest of the word, in the absence of autocorrect that is. That is usually enough for the receiving party to get the messaged in spite the typo. It won't need additional clarification in most cases.
Edit: I do love the neat tricks the Chinese keyboard has to offer. Like typing two initials , to get a a common two character word or phrase, such as hh that will get you all sorts of laughing characters, but also 还好 and 很好, hy generates 还有,还要,欢迎,好远 nb will offer 能不 and 牛逼 etc

But it's still not convincing enough for me. Idk. Maybe I'm just not too used to dealing with the Chinese keyboard yet.

The usual spoken Chinese 白话 put into writing is to make it easier for elementary learners or laypeople to understand an idea which one wishes to express. I do have some worries that the young people today tend to ignore ancient text 古文 writing and wisdoms. The full potential of Chinese language may be forgotten in the long run. I am sure there will always be some scholars who will continue to extend the life of Chinese language. However, it's a pity that the majority don't get to benefit from it because of their own aversion of this beautiful and powerful language. It's like throwing away a treasure simply because one doesn't know its value.

However, it's a pity that the majority don't get to benefit from it because of their own aversion of this beautiful and powerful language. It's like throwing away a treasure simply because one doesn't know its value.

I am not, either. I am not Han Chinese, and my language is not Chinese, either. However, when I learnt Chinese, and Russian as my second languages in high school, I found Chinese writing very interesting. I see Chinese writing contains meanings in each characters.
For example, when I came to live in the US, I saw the sign that writes “Car 4 sale,” I had a hard time to understand it. Why? At the first glance, I did not read the sign in tonal voice, but in the meanings of the word “4.” That is the reason the sign did not make sense. It has no meanings. In the effort to search for the meanings of the sign, I attempted to read it in pronunciation. At that time, I understand the sign.
When I went to college in the US, I found that some misspelling words, people tend to correct them, and still understand the sentence as a whole statement. People do not need to count every stroke in a text. They see the whole picture. That is the reason they invented a lot of short, brief abbreviations that convey meanings. Chinese characters are some sort of this concept.
I think that Chinese characters are never abandoned in Human history.
(4--four--for)
当我在美国上大学时,我发现一些拼写错误的单词,人们往往会纠正它们,并且仍然能理解这句话作为一个完整句子的陈述。人们不需要计算文本中的每一笔。他们看到的是整个画面。这就是他们发明了很多短小精悍的缩写来表达意思的原因。汉字就是这种概念的某种形式。
我认为,汉字在人类历史上从未被抛弃。

I don’t know, as a programmer I can type all day, but I get tired after writing about 20 characters. Not that I don’t get tired writing English though.
Maybe that’s because I would use my wrist when writing each character, not just my fingers, and indeed it’s the wrist that feels the fatigue. Maybe I’m doing it wrong, I can’t remember how I wrote when I was a student.
我不知道,作为一个程序员,我可以打一整天的字,但我写了大约20个字就累了。不过不是说我写英语就不累。
也许这是因为我在写每个字符时都会用手腕,而不仅仅是手指,而事实上是手腕感到疲劳。也许我做错了,我不记得我在学生时代是怎么写的了。

Not to mention on the verbal side, Asian languages are tonal, which means that one word can have a different meaning when said one way, rather than another.
Fascinating as fuck!
更不用说在语言方面,亚洲语言是有声调的,这意味着一个词以一种方式说出来,和以另一种方式说出来,会有不同的意思。
这太他妈的有意思了!

I don't know if writing Chinese is a problem, but remembering how to write them. For English, for the most part, if you can pronounce the word, you can write it, but not for Chinese characters.
我不知道写中文是否是个问题,但记住如何写它们确实是个问题。对于英语来说,在大多数情况下,如果你能读出这个词,你就能写出来,但对于汉字则不然。

At least for beginners, remembering the characters requires “muscle memory”, not mental memory. It’s more like playing a piano than saying the times tables. The only way to do it for beginners is by repetition. Once you get more familiar with the characters, though, it’s possible to just see a character and remember it.
至少对于初学者来说,记住这些字符需要"肌肉记忆",而不是心理记忆。这更像是弹钢琴而不是说乘法表。对于初学者来说,唯一的方法就是重复。不过,一旦你对这些字符更加熟悉,就有可能只看到一个字符就记住它。

Usually the Chinese content written on one page requires two pages of English translation. Why should I give up this kind of more efficient, richer vocabulary, more accurate expression, and has been passed down for thousands of years and has not been eliminated? There is no reason.

And the thing is, the whole word change if you add or miss a line. There’s also so many different kinds of word for the same damn pronunciation.
As compared to english compo, i can tryna make sense with the pronunciation and try to see if which letter fits the word.
e.g. Dehydration: Dihi/Dihy-dration,
我就是这样想的,作为一个学生,我在小学和中学时代真的不喜欢写中文作文,因为只写一个字就需要这么长的时间。
例如,Easy(4个字母),简单(~21笔,甚至还不是繁体字)。
而且,如果你增加或少写一笔,整个字的意思就会改变。同样的发音,也有很多不同种类的词。
与英语词组相比,我可以试着用发音来理解,并试着看看哪个字母适合这个词。

That is true.. now we use the pinyin system. The problem with this is if you take the pinyin system away and place a piece of paper in front of you. Most likely you have forgotten how to write most of the common Chinese words.
That is why I always prefer to “ write “ when using my phone.

Well you typed it with your keyboard using pinyin. That makes not differences than typing it in english. Maybe even slower since you have to pick the right character between the one with the same pinyin. But yeah handwriting talking you are right.

Never thought about that.
I just had a try, and I think yes, that’s the case too.
After all, one single Chinese character is exactly one syllable.
从未想过这个问题。
我刚才试了一下,我想是的,也是这样的情况。
毕竟,一个汉字正好是一个音节。

neat summary but a non-sequitor observation is that my eyes are a little defocussed at the moment, so I have difficulty making out the English characters. However, I suspect that even if I could read Chinese characters, they hold so much detail, that I’d probably have more difficulty discerning them

In college in the US, I used to take notes in a mixture of Chinese characters and English words, depending on which was quickest to write. E.g., writing 人 is easier than “man”, but “hot” is easier than 热. As an added bonus, no one ever wanted to borrow my notes.
