Sinclair said patients were coming into hospitals in a “much more severe” state. “We’ve had more patients going into delirium tremens – the really kind of life-threatening part of alcohol withdrawal – who end up in intensive care,” she said. “I have seen more people in our hospital in that state [during the pandemic] than I’ve seen in the six years prior to that.”

Alcohol is a depressant and therefore depresses our stresses and feelings. It works wonders, which is why so many do it, but it's only temporary and the original problem is still there along with the numerous negative physical and mental effects alcohol causes.

I self medicated for depression using alcohol for years. One day, after spending a weekend vomiting after a particularly bad bender, I realised the alcohol was making my situation worse, so I swore off booze until I could encounter a stressful situation and not think "I need a drink". Took 5 years, the first few weeks were hard, but I replaced the alcohol with alcohol free beers and various teas so I still had something to drink in an evening and it helped. Because I always said I was just breaking the habit, not swearing off it forever, I found it easier too. I can now have 1 or 2 drinks and not feel the need for more, and rarely do go beyond that.
At one point in my life, I was taking sleeping tablets one night, drinking myself stupid the next, and still not sleeping much in between. But I know now that my situation would've been vastly improved by learning a coping mechanism that'd help me deal with life without that, and that's what I did. It was hard, but if I had to do it again I would, because I can now take lifes bullshit and not need alcohol.
I promise you, if this is what you want to do, if you want to quit, you can. It'll be difficult, you need to learn what works for you. Good luck.

I used to drink, I always needed another when others were leaving. Part of the problem here in the UK and much of the world, is that drinking forms a massive part of socialising, dating etc.
A few beers would lead me to a bottle of whisky and a bag of coke.
As others have said, the current climate of poor pay, failing healthcare, unaffordable housing, inflation and lockdowns will inevitably lead to substance abuse across the board. When GPs turn to antidepressants and anxiolytics for first line treatment, then society is sick. Ironically, social media has destroyed society, being honest about how you feel is treated with contempt, the constant need to validate yourself with fake internet points and clout all result in isolation and social facades that are impossible to maintain forever.
I'm a year sober from everything now, but I still struggle when I sit in a pub as I still crave a single malt or some form of social lubrication. Its been ingrained in me to drink at social events, my family are drinkers, so social events were always about drinking. Sadly, many meaningful relationships deteriorated due to problematic boozing. Jobs were lost and partners left.
Part of the problem is escaping the dull reality of life. Booze and drugs make things better, temporarily. Some people like temporary fixes. They then become a permanent fix. If your crutch is booze or drugs, you need to take a break from it. One thing I know for sure as an addict, alcohol is certainly one of, if not the most damaging substances available on the market.
Find a purpose, get out and walk in nature and find someone who you can be 100% yourself with.

Who would imagine that closing the places people can drink safely and with supervision, and scaring them all into being alone at home the whole time, would result in less safe drinking?
Though I suspect that the "harmful" level is so low it's a bit meaningless. The maximum guideline is about seven pints a week - if you have one a day I wouldn't call that a dangerous habit or a dependency.
The increase in people in higher risk groups is bad, though. Time for a Scots-style minimum pricing rule, and higher alcohol taxes for off-licence sales (so pubs become more competitive again vs supermarket drinking).

The increase in people in higher risk groups is bad, though. Time for a Scots-style minimum pricing rule, and higher alcohol taxes for off-licence sales (so pubs become more competitive again vs supermarket drinking).

It makes sense; your living room doesn't have a kicking out time, it's cheaper, no taxi/bus/train home you need to get, music/films/tv/video games for company if you find yourself on your own. Impulse control already reduced and effectively a free bar at your disposal.
Personally, I do drink too much. I wouldn't say I'm an alcoholic but it's definitely a habit. It's a struggle for me to go 6 days (which is what I'm trying to do this year) at a time without a drink. The background to this for me is i had quite a destructive drug habit in my 20s which I essentially replaced with equally damaging but more socially acceptable food and booze habits.
After becoming a parent, Friday nights on the sofa with a takeaway and a few beers or a bottle of wine to share with the other half were already a thing. Lockdown anxiety, long zoom calls with mates, the ease of home delivery, no need to get up to commute or get the kids to school, yeah, I'll say I definitely upticked on the drinking too much scale. No full blown binges (but I don't really do that anyway now as a man in his late 30s) but definitely more "fuck it let's open a bottle of wine" moments and "you know what? I will have a glass of whisky to chase this beer down" in front of a nice cozy fire.
I strongly doubt I'm alone in this (and the evidence seems to suggest that's true) but for everyone that recognises the issue there'll be loads that don't and that will cause problems for the NHS down the line if we don't raise awareness.

It's much easier to drink too much when you're at home, especially if you're by yourself. Talking to other people and being out in the world needing to do things is one of the best ways to notice that you've had enough.

I hear this a lot but I've always found the opposite. While I'm at home I've really got no incentive to drink more than a couple of beers, and find that it makes me bloated and super tired in no time so I don't even want more to drink.
Being out on the other hand, you've got a bit more motivation to drink (along with social pressure, let's be honest) and being busy you can easily lose track of how much you've actually had.

I'm the carer for an alcoholic and since I'm always the one cleaning up the aftermath of their drinking dangerous amounts, then yeah I 100% can blame the person doing the drinking because "life's too hard". While the drinker is escaping reality, those close to them are living in a shit reality of having a drunk in their life.
