How much do doctors earn?

I don't know why others are not telling the whole truth, I mean it's true that doctors don't make much immediately after med school but a few years of experience can do wonders and drastically change one's earnings.
I am just an Mbbs as of now but I can give you my father's example. He used to earn ?10,000/month as a physician after he completed his MD in 1990(that's a lot considering the time period). As soon as his practice took off, he started earning more and more. As of now, he earns ?4,50,00,000 as we have 1 hospital and a few chemist shops, needless to say that he also practices every single day for 14-16hrs.
I am not trying to show off at all, hell, that's why I went anonymous; but I also wanted the youth reading these answers to know that besides having the satisfaction of saving someone's life, money is also there, and a lot of it for that matter. My request to other medicos is to not lie about their incomes(or at least mention their current income), that discourages aspirants preparing to enter our profession.
My apologies if I did sound a bit showy and pretentious, just trying to present the whole truth.

I'm going 'Anonymous' intentionally because I don't want to create a debate here. First fact about doctors is that the average doctor earns more than the average engineer. That's I've noticed from many places, Considering demand and supply ratios, we have less doctor and more engineer.
I've seen doctors earning less than engineer in some places, but that's their choice like they don't want to shift to other place, they are too honest about their profession(but very hard to find such doctors)
Many of my friends are doctors, few of them live in villages and run a clinic or more. They earn more than any 5+ years engineer earn in a city like Bangalore. They just don't earn from consulting patient, but also earns via prescxtion of medicine. I remember an incident, we were going on a tour and needed a nice camera; a doctor friend demanded his MR for the same. In a day or two my friend got a new camera .
There are many incidents, I can list out here. I'm surprised that people here do not reveal the truth. May be one reason is that they don't pay taxes like engineers does.
I'm sorry, if this answer hurt to any doctors here, but that's a fact I've felt.

My cousin brother is a famous doctor in Jharkhand state. In 2015, He came to Delhi to attend some conference. As he was travelling back to his place the next day, He came home. Next day, I went to drop him to the station when he asked me for my suggestion on a good sedan for his family. I replied, “BMW 5 series “ (Buy a BMW 5 Series brother) to which he replied “I can buy a BMW but it won’t run properly on the damaged roads of Jharkhand".
I was surprised that he can afford a BMW more than 50 lakhs.

Don't worry. U must remember that mbbs is in itself a v demanding course. And I've known people who hav failed who become amazing professionals and famous practitioners. There r academically rigorous people who give up on practicing and decide to do other things in life. So in the end “it's our choices more than our capabilities that makes us who we truly are”. But yes - boost ur confidence, and have that grit to not waste a single minute and work super hard towards ur goal with full conviction. But if u give up - u r denying yourself from that chance. So gud luck and keep fighting!

Rahat Monga
Not me, but my sister is a doctor.
Firstly I'll mention her earnings, then what she sacrified to become a doctor.
So, her earnings,
While she was doing her internship (2013–2014), the stipend she used to get was 15,000 INR.
Then, in 2015, she did a contract based job for 6 months and got some 70,000 INR.
And now, in her obstetrics and gynaecology she's getting 88,000.
What all she sacrificed,
Ummm, not only her, but us, her family too. :)
Well we are a nuclear family of 5. Mom, Dad, Deedo (i love calling her this), Me, Brother. She was born in 1991, me in 1996 and bro came to us in 2001. So, a gap of 5-years in 2 of us lead us in 3 different stages of life always, till date, unless all of us are adults.

So, when i was in 6th standard and bro was in 1st, we had to bid goodbye to our didi to Chandigarh, 190 kms from our town, for her medical entrance exams coaching. And she was his favorite in house. He used to cry every evening missing her to be home. I used to sit beside her and chatter about my day for a long time and used to go to her taking every little problem, from personal to fights with bro to my homework and drawings, she would do it all. And now, i was the elder kid in home. That sucked. I barely used to talk to her on phone, as i just used to sit beside mom and listen to her conversation with Deedo, reason being, she had to study and i was an introvert. She used to visit us every 2.5 months only for 2 days, and used to cry everytime i bid her goodbye and take a promise from her that next time she would come soon. But no
Okay, time passed, 2008, with God's grace, she got a great rank in All India Medical test exams for UG, she got MBBS in Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, Bangalore. This time, 2024 kms away, but we were happy. Didi was going to be a Doctor. She used to visit us after every year for 15 days and we grew up almost without her. She graduated in March,2014, when i passed my 12th and bro was now in 7th standard. You see, he entered in teenage and me in adulthood, almost without her.

Then she started to prepare for her MD entrance exams but luck didn't favour her for the first attempts.
Decided to try again, second time and this time, she did a job for 6 months in Government hospital, 32 sector, Chandigarh to gain some experience, and to freshen up her mind from constant studying. This time,2015, she didn't get a rank of her choice so she decided to try again. Not an easy-peasy task, only medicos know this. Hats off to them!
2016, second attempt, again, she wanted to clear for AIIMS , Chandigarh or a good government college in All India exam. Her wish, though, was to in AIIMS.
But, 2017, not yet.
3 years of her constant struggle, hard work and we had to be away from her. Why? Because in these 3 years, even when she was in home, no one from us was allowed to go her room. But we were happy, at least she was with us.

I am a naughty kid at home (officially an adult but I'm a kid at home). I just used to open her room steadily, smile like an idiot, say Hi! And come back.
Thank God????
2018, she got AIIMS, Delhi, her dream college and now she is in second year MD (obstetrics and gynaecology) working from 7 am in morning till 11 pm or sometimes even late till, 1 or 2 am.
Brother is now 18.5 Years old, I'm almost 24, Missing her since 11 years. We love her like anything.
Being doctor ain't easy. Almost every doctor's life is like that.
She used to be little arrogant and stubborn but since she has been doing and completed her MBBS, she's turned into such a humble person that I'm shocked.
I think, if soldiers protect us from border, doctors protect us in the border.

The general impression that once you qualify to be a doctor you can lean back and watch the money flow in is very far from the truth. You will not be poor; that is for sure. An average middle-class status is more or less assured, but for anything more than that one must put in hard work. For a doctor to be rich takes a lot more continued effort than any other profession.
The remuneration doctors receive is much less than what their long training deserves. No surprise there. Their products are so critical for bodily wellbeing and survival that market forces cannot apply in their business. Doctors have to price their products to suit the purse of the patient. It has to be affordable. A coronary bypass may be worth a million but if the patient is poor it has to be offered free of cost. Even in the U.S. where hospital bills drive many to bankruptcy it is the hospitals and the drug trade that get the lion’s share of the profits. The doctor’s portion is modest.
In my long stretch in the profession, I have seen first-hand how doctors make their money. I am speaking of my experiences in India where doctors have considerable freedom on how they practise their profession. It may not be so in many developed countries. In the U.S. anyway it is the insurance companies that call the shots. A illustrative examples will give one an idea of the doctor’s side of the medical business.

First, those that do very well financially.
Dr. S was a competent physician. He was an assistant physician in a teaching unit in a government medical college hospital. His was a full-time government job in which the rules allowed him to have a private practice in his spare time. An early riser he started seeing cases at 7.30 AM in a part of his house that he set apart as his clinic. At nine he left for hospital often breakfasting in the car. In the hospital, he performed his duties to the full satisfaction of his chief, his students, and his patients. His hospital duties will be over by 2.00 PM. After lunch and a brief rest, he left for his clinic in another part of the city. In this clinic, he was a consultant. He saw a steady stream of cases and by the time he was home, it was past 10.00 PM.
This was his routine day after day. He took a day off only when sick. His children had only glimpses of him and his wife had to represent him in family functions. He had never been on a proper vacation. His devotion to his practice was total. He was rich. But he made his money in the hardest way possible. His neighbour to the right was a wholesale grain merchant. He did not make his money in small bits like the doctor but in large chunks by moving loaded lorries from one place to another through telephonic instructions. His neighbour to his left was a politician. He neither treated the sick nor moved loaded lorries, but he made money nevertheless, tons of it.

The doctor’s work-life balance was so awry that cynics might say that during his long career the doctor was undergoing a 30-year prison sentence of hard labour. The doctor did not see it that way. If money-making was his sole aim, he could have taken the paths trodden by his neighbours or even better ones for he was smart but he chose to be a doctor because he liked it. He was proud of what he did and his professional colleagues envied him.
His skills as a clinician were not the only reason for his success. Some of his colleagues were as capable as he was. They would have loved to do what he was doing. But capability as a doctor is not enough to reach great heights as practitioners. Setting up a practice, staffing the clinic, and having a network of practitioners to refer cases need people skills, business skills, and political skills and those have to be inborn. Imparting those skills does not form part of the medical curriculum.

It depends how you look at. Let's take a college grad as comparison. A doctor will go to an additional 4 years of medical school where they will put in about 70-80hrs a week between class, rotations, and extra time in the anatomy lab and library. For this they will typically go into debt of around 300k. I can tell you myself, I worked way more than 80hrs a week, but not everyone did.Internal medicine was 80hrs a week . For for that made about 50k/yr. Same with fellowship was another 3 years. So this far we have put in over 38,000hrs of work. Now we cant pay off that 300k in loans on 50k/yr but let's just say the government decided not to tax us and not collect interest on our loan . So 38k hours and we have made 0 dollars. Now we are a cardiologist earning $250k/yr working 60 or so hours a week
Ps. I am not putting down people that work at walmart. I just wanted to give an idea of a job that pays a similar hourly rate.

Like stock prices, Earnings of a professional depends on demand and supply. Doctors tend to concentrate in urban areas which results in more supply than demand , which is reflected in the lower salaries for entry level job in medical profession.
Plus acquiring medical expertise is time consuming process, so it lakes long to reach a stage when one is actually high paid. Very few can reach that level.
