UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson's credibility was once again thrown into doubt on Wednesday, after leaked emails appeared to contradict his claim of having no involvement in the evacuation of animals from a British charity in Afghanistan as the country fell to the Taliban and people were scrambling to find a way out.

The release of emails by a cross-party parliamentary committee on Foreign Affairs prompted claims that Britain's embattled leader had lied, at a time when he is already facing accusations of misleading Parliament over Covid-19 possibly rule-busting parties at Downing Street, which are now the subject of a police investigation.

Suggestions that vital resources were used to rescue animals instead of people at Johnson's request have been circulating for months, after tweets on the issue from the UK Defense Secretary in August and then in written testimony from an ex-UK Foreign Office staffer, who detailed the UK's "dysfunctional" and "chaotic" evacuation effort. In December, the Prime Minister dismissed the allegation as "complete nonsense."

But emails published by Parliament on Wednesday, supplied by the whistleblower Raphael Marshall as evidence in an ongoing inquiry into the UK's messy Afghanistan exit, paint a different picture.

One email, sent by a Foreign Office official on August 25 at 12:20 p.m. local time, states that "The PM" had just "authorized" the evacuation of staff and animals from Nowzad, a charity run by former British Royal Marines Cmdr. Pen Farthing, while lobbying a colleague to help with evacuations for another animal charity.

"Equivalent charity Nowzad, run by an ex-Royal Marine, has received a lot of publicity and the PM has just authorised their staff and animals to be evacuated, are hoping to be treated in the same capacity," the email reads, referring to permission to leave outside the rules of immigration.

A second email, sent between Foreign Office officials later that day, references the "PM's decision" to evacuate Nowzad staff, but doesn't mention animals.

"In light of the PM's decision earlier today to evacuate the staff of the Nowzad animal charity, the [animal charity -- name redacted] (another animal rights NGO) is asking for agreement to the entry of [details redacted] staff, all Afghan nationals," it reads.

On its website, Nowzad confirms that its founder, Farthing, was rescued from Afghanistan with the organization's staff and their immediate families, along with 94 dogs and 68 cats. In a statement responding to the leaked emails, Nowzad said it had no insight into how the decision was made to evacuate their animals and it is "appalled to find ourselves at the centre of a political media debate on who did what and when" in relation to the evacuation. It said Farthing had also submitted evidence to the sext committee.

Downing Street has continued to deny that Johnson had any involvement in evacuating more than 150 animals, while evacuation requests from thousands of desperate Afghans went unfilled.

"It remains the case that the PM didn't instruct officials on this case," a Downing Street press officer said Wednesday.

The revelations mark the latest blow to Johnson, who is clinging to power despite drowning in scandals -- among them, being accused of lying to Parliament over his knowledge of gatherings held at Downing Street during lockdown.

Opposition lawmaker John Healey tweeted Wednesday: "Once again, the PM has been caught out lying. He should never have given priority to flying animals out of Afghanistan while Afghans who worked for our forces were left behind."

"We need to know why the PM overruled the Defense Secretary with this decision," Healey said.

UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace had publicly said people must be prioritized when the military was in the midst of evacuating thousands at risk. But that changed suddenly on August 25, when Wallace announced on Twitter that they had been given the green light.

Once authorization was given, he tweeted "those most at risk" would continue to be processed first, adding, "no one has the right in this humanitarian crisis to jump the queue."

I'm very confused. The media pile-on wants us to think bozo authorised the rescue of animals before rescuing the people.
And yet, rescuing the people is the default policy.
This makes me think there won't be emails from him authorising the evacuation of "people", because all the assets were deployed for an evacuation and by definition, evacuation means people.
So what is the issue here? That he prioritised animals over people or that he rescued animals at all.
I don't hide the fact that I'm confused. I also am no fan of the man, I am also not a fan of searching for smoke in the absence of fire.

Boris told a lie? He cannot lie because he is a highly principled and ethical politician of the highest calibre. He tells the truth even when it casts him in a bad light and this is why he is universally loved and admired.

....and he’s physically incapable of sweating. Oh, sorry that’s the other c*nt making a piss take of the U.K. to the world.

They do that themselves with the way they vote.
Boris didn't get in by accident, the people of England overwhelmingly saw him as the man they most wanted to lead them.

FunctionalFun
Boris didn't get in by accident
This is correct
the people of England overwhelmingly saw him as the man they most wanted to lead them.
This is the equivalent of pointing to Trump and exclaiming him as America's True Avatar. It simply is not factual.
We've gone through quite a few consecutive Tory leaders and even this one is holding on by his nails.
I can assure you we do not want this dishonorable person representing us.

The electorate votes for parties and parties elect leaders in British parliamentary systems. He was elected a Member of Parliament by voters in a safe seat which overwhelmingly votes Tory.

I imagine there was quite a few 'animal lovers' who loved the fact those dogs and cats got out, after all the MSM were all over it at the time.

For those of us outside official circle can someone in the inside explain why the prime minister might ever be expected to pay attention to something miniscule like this?

ElCuntIngles
Well, yeah.
Because they were told at the time that it was after all the humans that the UK were going to take had already left.
It's still in no way clear that any more humans would have escaped had the Nowzad flight not existed.
What is clear though, is that Johnson is a liar and that the withdrawal from Afghanistan was a complete fuck up.

BestFriendWatermelon
What is clear though, is that Johnson is a liar
This. All politicians lie, but you're not supposed to be this at ease with it, especially when you're asking the public to believe you that you didn't do anything wrong in regards to the lockdown parties.
In the UK [being caught] lying to parliament is a serious offence, that typically results in the perpetrator being fired or forced to resign. The reasoning being that a government cannot function properly if it is being mislead as to the actual situation they're governing.
It would have been easy to admit to it, explain why you did it (complex situation, rushed decisions, unclear picture on the ground, hey I love animals ok?, etc) and move on relatively unscathed.

TheEnviious
More evidence of Boris lying to the UK parliament and British people. He needs to go but my worry is there isn't really a credible candidate to replace him inside the party and the last thing we need right now is an election.

If the Tories leadership track record holds up it will be someone worse and that could very well mean Rees-Mogg.
Imagine that.

Lojen
I'm not convinced Rees-Mogg is even human.

BestFriendWatermelon
There'll be no election. The tories won't voluntarily go into an election in which they're 10 points down in the polls. They'll pick someone amongst themselves for new PM. They don't need a strong candidate, next election isn't until 2024, plenty of time to repair the damage.

[dexed]
I think the real tragedy here is that people think we didn't have the resources to evacuate both animals and people in their entirety. Fucking joke of a government.

Johnson cannot tell the truth. Let's stop pretending that he can or that he might come clean when caught out; Johnson cannot and will not tell the truth, ever. The idea that he is a man who tells it like it is is ridiculous. He tells people what they want to hear, no matter how far from the truth that may be.

The only explanation now is that Boris Johnson used some sort of monkey paw to become PM and the curse is that he can't ever admit when he lied or in fact just can't ever tell the truth.

You didn't see the deranged twitter crowd demanding "save teh animuls!!! Right now!!" at the time. You know what twitter is like. You can't reason with those clowns.
It's still utterly pathetic that Boris tried to pander to them, and that boomers in general all seem to think twitter is the only website to exist and that they speak for everyone, but Boris definitely did what the left-wing twitter crowd were demanding at the time.
Can guarantee a lot of the Brits in this topic complaining about this were part of that group demanding it, too. There's a lot of overlap.

Canadian here, but were I a UK citizen I would trust someone who didn't really want the job over the sort who do. The article redacted the name of the charity. In order to get to the bottom of this scandal, the name needs to be unredacted and people at the charity need to be questioned. Somebody at the charity decided to do this and they may have talked Boris into it. Why did this charity have cats and dogs? What were they doing before the evacuation?

LaviniaBeddard
This is starting to feel like Trump - every day a new thing which, for any decent politician, would automatically mean an ashamed resignation. But rather than resignation the new scandal just serves to drown out the noise from the previous day's shameful incident. And rather than intensify the pressure to resign (and have no future in any position of responsibility), the build up of incidents seems to actually diminish the seriousness of each one.
