British troops helping with training in Ukraine will leave the country this weekend, the armed forces minister James Heappey said as he warned that Russia could launch an attack “at no notice”.

Heappey said the small number of UK personnel sent to train Ukrainian troops on anti-tank missileswould be withdrawn, alongside about 100 helping with wider troop training as part of Operation Orbital.

Britain, in common with all other Nato allies, has said it would not fight against any Russian attack, a point repeated by the minister in a BBC interview. Ukraine is not a member of Nato, although in 2008 it was given a promise that it would one day be able to join.

The military evacuation follows a string of warnings, led by the US but supported by the UK, that Russia had assembled a force capable of invading Ukraine. Jake Sullivan, the US national security adviser, said on Friday night: “We are in the window when an invasion could begin at any time.”

Western intelligence fear the most likely scenario, in the event of a conflict, is that Russian forces would mount a lightning attack aimed at encircling Kyiv, a city of more than 3 million people, and trying to force a change of regime. As a first step, Moscow’s forces would aim to rapidly degrade Ukraine’s military in a lightning attack.

Russia was now in a position to attack “very, very quickly”, Heappey said, though he hoped no invasion would take place. He told BBC Breakfast: “We are now confident that the artillery systems, the missile systems and the combat air are all in place that would allow Russia to launch – at no notice – an attack on Ukraine.”

The military withdrawal follows a Foreign Office warning on Friday to British nationals, telling them to leave Ukraine immediately while commercial flights are still available and the land border with Poland remains open.

The US told all remaining Americans on Friday to leave the country in the next 48 hours, with other countries following suit with similar warnings. Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Germany, Latvia, Norway and the Netherlands are among those issuing similar advice. Israel said it was evacuating relatives of embassy staff.

There are no plans for an emergency airlift by western air forces from Kyiv, unlike in Afghanistan last summer, the minister said. Unlike then, “the Royal Air Force will not be in a position to go in and to fly people out”, Heappey added.

But US and UK forces are building up in Poland to help provide support to the eastern European country and help out if there is a mass movement of refugees in the event of an invasion. On Friday, the US said it would send 3,000 further troops to Poland, on top of 1,700 it had already agreed to send out.

Britain said earlier this week it would send 350 troops to Poland, in addition to the 250 it already has in the country, and has placed a further 1,000 on standby for deployment to help with any refugee movements. The US has estimated that anywhere between 1 million and 5 million people could be displaced.

Defence minister Sergei Shoigu, in a meeting with his UK counterpart, Ben Wallace, also accused the UK of sending special forces to the country. “I would like to see the reason why the United Kingdom is sending special forces to Ukraine and until when [they] will be there,” Shoigu said.

Amid calls for Britons to leave the country as quickly as possible, the former British ambassador to the US Lord Kim Darroch described the challenge remaining embassy staff would have to undertake to help Britons leave the country, saying it would “overwhelm the embassy’s resources”.

He added: “With lots of foreign nationals trying to get out, there will be chaos, there may need to be extra flights laid on so this will occupy everyone’s time for 24 hours a day for the next few days and you won’t get everyone out – some people will choose to stay,” he said.

I live near a barracks, the squaddies rotate in and out, cause chaos in town. Why do we spend so much on a military that doesn’t fight, or stick up for allies. This is just a green light to Russia.

Why are USA and UK posturing for war? Money. Don't let them tell you it's for Ukraines safety. Putin is a prick but he has said many times that he does not want war, he just doesn't want Ukraine in NATO.
We are trying to force their hand to gain a military presence on the Russian border. Its total warmongering.

Lies.
Nobody forces another country to join NATO. A country chooses too or doesn't. Neither NATO or any of it's individual members want to go to war with Russia. It is not up to Russia to decide what Ukraines foreign policy should be.
Sometimes, just sometimes, it is about doing the right thing.

Honestly have you been watching the news or reading any articles on the subject or only going off what you've seen other people say on social media? Because this is the second time you've stated completely incorrect things as fact.
We are not sending troops into Ukraine to fight Russia. Nor will the US or any other NATO member. This has been ruled out multiple times by multiple leaders. We will apply extremely strict sanctions on them instead.
There is no warmongering going on. There will be no fighting by NATO troops. This is about standing up to a dictatorship that is trying to control it's neighbors who have asked for our help

Ive been following the news closely actually, and all they talk about is how close we are to war etc etc. Have you seen the American news? They are thirsty for it, and we follow them wherever they go. We can talk about sanctions but once US kicks this off it's going to be a disaster. As much as they say they won't their GDP relies on conflict even more than ours.

It's probably one of the best places to live. At least it'd be over quick. If a nuclear war breaks out then it's not going to be just one missile. Nukes will be flying everywhere. Critical and logistical infrastructure will be targeted. Basically everything starts falling to pieces as logistics breaks down entirely. No food, no electricity, no gas. And what supplies are available will be diverted to the military, assuming central government still exists.

Because it gives Putin a valid (in this mind) reason to attack.
Ukraine isn't in NATO, so can't have NATO personnel and assets there in the case of an invasion. But there is a treaty meaning that countries like the UK do have to provide help. Sending lethal aid and instruction on how to use it gets around that.

You're right, I see now I was wrong.
The best solution is definitely to escalate the situation by arming one side and forcing Russia to invade or back down, knowing full well that they are willing to invade if their demands aren't met.
I suppose you support our previous masterstrokes such as the Iraq war, the Afghanistan War, and the approaches taken in Libya and Syria (which ultimately created a mess we wanted no part in solving).
There's no good outcome here for Ukraine, only a "least worst" outcome

Better example, letting Germany take all of Europe before trying to stop them in WW2. We paid dearly for not trying to stop them sooner, it nearly ended the UK as a nation.
Ukraine is an ally, you know what happens when your ally is attacked and you do nothing? Your other allies abandon you. Why be your friend when they don’t serve to help you? At that point all the baltic states would have zero reason to stay with the west.
Ukraine falling to Russia would be one of the biggest geopolitical disasters for NATO countries since the cold war, and it would directly affect us.

Ukraine falling under Russian influence will happen either way. The only questions are:
1、whether they have a Russian imposed corrupt government or whether they'll have their own government (which will be restrained from pursuing certain actions due to Minsk 2).
2、whether Ukraine has to have a war to get to that outcome, which will come with inevitable war crimes, death and refugees
Go and look up the Wikipedia article on appeasement. You can find a whole range of genius foreign policy decisions like the Vietnam war where politicians used 1930s Germany as an argument for pursing an aggressive and Ultimately disastrous war. And remember, Russia also fought Germany as part of the Soviet unx. They also fear appeasement. In their eyes, they've appeased NATO for years and now the enemy is at the gates.
Avoiding appeasement doesn't mean going for the opposite extreme and choosing stupid and unnecessary conflicts we're doomed to lose.
Ukraine isn't an ally, they're just a country who was unfortunate enough to be stuck next to Russia. Poland is an ally as part of NATO. If Ukraine were an ally, we would go to war over them. We won't go to war over them and Russia knows this.

Ukraine successfully toppled a corrupt Russian government to create their own functioning democracy. The only reason that was possible is because of the aid we send them.
These kinds of arguments are stupid. Because going into Afghanistan and Vietnam were stupid them we shouldn’t help any other nation?? Because appeasement has been used as an excuse for bad wars, we can’t provide aid to our allies??
The reason those conflicts were stupid wasn’t because we got involved in a foreign country, it’s because we got involved for misguided reasons.
Ukraine is an ally, being an ally doesn’t mean you must got to war for them, especially when in this case going to war for them may literally mean the end of civilisation.
But sure, we should let Russia continue to expand consequence free as much as they want. I can’t see a problem with letting a facistic dictatorship grow uncontested in power

Except we don’t know full well that they’re willing to invade. NATO isn’t hoping they’ll start a war, NATO is betting that if they arm the Ukrainians enough and talk about economic consequences Russia will back down.
It’s incredible to me that your serious answer to this is ‘well, Russia are going to do a bad thing, so we might as well just let them do it, because what would be the point in opposing it?’
I should also probably point out that unlike Iraq and Afghanistan, we’re not the ones doing the actual fighting, it’s not an illegal unilateral invasion (quite the opposite, actually), and Ukraine is attempting to defend itself from an aggressor. How you think the shitshow that was the wars in the Middle East compares to this is beyond me.

Sending now troops to train other troops? Bullshit! According to all western news invasion is imminent. That gonna be a fucking short training. What a bad joke!

Russia knows that after Afghanistan that Europe is even more war-shy than ever and he'll be able to walk into Ukraine without much to worry about.

2 decades of wasting our time, blood and money is coming home to roost.
Sadly everyone still wants to play world super power :(

Withdrawing British troops now is probably a good move.
If Russia invades Ukraine and Ukraine puts up a fight it would be a tragedy. But if Russian and Nato troops start firing on each other its a path to global nuclear war.
Withdrawing British troops to NATO countries allows for de-escalation.
Have you not watched the movies "Sum of All Fears" or "By Dawn's Early Light"?
Offering a path out is vital, it's why they put the hotlines in between the Whitehouse and the Kremlin during the Cold War.
