I worked for two of his companies….Solar City(now Tesla Solar) and Tesla. My experience wasn’t great….I was working at Solar City when he officially took over(he was already a major shareholder prior to that). At that time sales were in a slight downturn as opposed to the year prior, but shortly after he officially took over those sales went into a death spiral. Elon decided that he didn’t really like the aesthetic nature of a solar ‘panels’ and decided to quickly transition to solar ‘roof’. ‘Roof’ was still in the design phase. He made the decision to start taking deposits for solar roof and stop pushing Solar panels. He also decided to get rid of the sales teams(80%). He wanted to push sales online (much like how Tesla auto does it). That sales model did not work and sales went downhill fast. Solar roof is amazing Aesthetically, and the product is mature, however the means of installing it, and the price point is still cost prohibitive for the masses. He also wanted to push his batteries(Power Wall) for in-home use. That’s great, and it is a fine product, but it is usually an add to a LARGE solar system…so… If you are not selling solar systems, then you are not going to sell very many batteries.
Since he took over, two years ago, solar city(Tesla) has had mass layoffs and firings. Thousands of hard-working people have lost their jobs(50%) because of bad business Decisions. You don’t hear much about this, nor do you hear much about his layoffs at Tesla Auto (They also have had mass layoffs). I don’t know many people that still work there, but the couple of people that I do, say it’s a shadow of what it once was…and… morale is an all time low. You don’t hear much about this either. What you hear about are Musk’s next…latest and greatest ventures. Why is that? It is because of carefully coordinated marketing, and manipulation of his “brand”…
I will say that, when I worked there, the in-house training that was provided/offered to all employees was outstanding. The apps(we used a lot of them) to preform our jobs were well written and allowed employees to work efficiently.

When I started there we had 125+ employees working out of my office. When I got laid off there were 17 employees left. The bulk of those employees comprised of 2 install teams, one person to performs each of a handful of specific office functions, a manager, and a admin assistant, and a couple of people in the warehouse.
It is my opinion, Elon’s supposed innovative business models and ‘Vision’ deserves the cricisism and scrutiny he is now staring to receive.
In my time there ( just under two years) I only knew One employee that had a Tesla. That’s because, quite frankly, no one that works there can afford them. I met a handful of employees (out of hundreds) that have solar on thier roof, and one that I knew had the in-home Tesla battery(power wall)…As an employee ther is really no incentive to buy any of the products…. Particularly the automobiles! If you bought a solar system you got $1000 off but had to wait until there was a gap in schedule to accommodate the installation. The average price of a residential solar system, even after rebates/incentives, generally starts at 25 to 30K. Depending on size it quickly goes up from there. Most employees just couldn’t afford them.
I was paid less than what was promised. I was shown the same type of pay scales that everyone is shown. I NEVER had the opportunity to make that amount of money. You could have spent 70–80 or more hours trying, but pay was directly tied to volume of sales(I was not in sales just to be clear), and that is common sense… when sales went down so did the majority of ALL the employees pay.
I’m not seeing any first-hand accounts from people that worked for a Musk held company. All I’m seeing, as answers, are cut-and-pastes from what I call the ‘Musk propaganda machine’…
He/they talk a good game…but what has he actually accomplished other than to become a billionaire?

Elon never puts up with any technical BS. He focuses extremely highly on the integrity of work and has a very professional but low tolerance for under-performers.
I am told that he doesn't care much about personality flaws, as long as you take the initiative, get shit done, and fast.
At SpaceX there is an expression: "No matter how hard you work, someone else is working harder"... You can guess who that is.
Quoting my friend: "Elon is a serious powerhouse in the building and sets the culture for everyone, which makes it exciting to work there."
All in all, it sounds like an incredibly intense, inspiring, and focused operation at SpaceX with some of the world's most intelligent people, a large % in their mid 20s/ early 30s'.

I didn't work with elon directly much when I was at Tesla, but my team and I met with him to discuss obstacles on a couple occasions.
The thing that stuck out to me most was how quickly he caught on to what he were trying to accomplish and what challenges we faced. He also was never intimidated by our challenges. He didn't really seem worried about technical details. He always had a way of taking a complicated problem and making it very simple.
He wasn't ever rude or unprofessional, but he was never afraid to interrupt or challenge an assertion.

A new biography of him was released recently. To be honest, and to contradict the hero worship that Quora (and to be honest myself) throws on Elon Musk, you may not like the answer in this book, and in anecdotal evidence. To start I would like to caveat this answer by saying that I would love to work at SpaceX, and that I would willingly put up with everything I am about to describe to work there. I don't work for any of Elon's companies (yet, fingers crossed) but I know people who have, and do.
Elon has been described by many as a driving task master who sets short deadlines with tight budgets and doesn't accept failure. He demands the best from every member of his teams and himself. An acquaintance who worked for SpaceX in McGregor, Texas described how every day of her internship food was catered in because there wasn't enough time for them to go and get food and keep the schedule. There was a controversial statement made by an anonymous employee who said that Elon penalized him for missing a company event to watch the birth of a child. Mr. Musk disputes this event occurring at all, but it was included in the book. Elon doesn't have time to put up with anyone who isn't 100% on board with his vision. I heard him described as having a "unique sense of empathy." This is because he is acutely empathetic with humanity as a species, but seems to regard individuals as tools. He doesn't seem to be a bad man, just a driven one.
So how would it feel to work for Elon Musk? That depends. If you don't enjoy pressure, don't have self-confidence, or can't push the limits of human endurance and creativity, working for Elon Musk would not be an enjoyable experience. Appreciate the work of his companies, wear the merchandise, be an investor, but do not work there. If you thrive under pressure, are strutting around with ice in your veins, and willing to take 10 years off your lifespan due to blood pressure and sleep problems, step up, get hired, and go change the world. You still might not enjoy the years in a sense of getting pleasure from them, but I imagine there is a sense of satisfaction and purpose that can hardly be matched by any other form of employment.

I met Elon in late 90’s when he was researching technologies for a new project. He was looking for software for a new endeavor and I was a young sales person with one of those products in my sales bag.
He called first, and we discussed what our products could do. He was nice on the phone. He had tons of questions. He had a staccato way about him. If he was learning from you, you were able to talk. If he had caught on, he would interrupt and try and move you to the next subject he was interested in. I was able to satisfy him enough that he wanted to come in for a personal presentation. Only in hindsight do I recognize that since he was a relatively unknown person at that time, did no one make a big deal about the meeting. It was just me and Elon in the conference room. He peppered me with questions as I tried to get through my presentation. After the presentation, he asked if he could get a personal look at the software source code. I told him I would need to ask my management.
Our company selling model, or licensing model didn’t lend well to offsite source code trials of our software as, at that time, everything was client/server based; meaning, we would have had to send him disks of our software. We offered to have him come in to meet with our engineers to go over the software, but Elon was more interested in seeing it for himself. Specifically, what pieces of the software would work for what he had in mind for his new project. This is where my inexperience and youth failed me. This, according to my management, was just another person asking for a demo, and we had this conversation many many times with many other prospects, and I was told an offsite version of our software was not an option. I wrote the best email I could, to explain this to Elon. I wish I had kept it. He didn’t like the response, and in what has become typical Elon Musk bravado, wrote back an email that somehow hit me the wrong way. I don’t exactly remember what I wrote back, but the email I wrote, precipitated an email from Elon to our COO who came to my cube and asked me what the hell was I doing with this particular prospect.
I explained my position and email response with respect to our source code policy to the CEO and COO to no avail. That afternoon, I was removed from managing that particular account, and my manager gave me a lecture on sending emails. That wasn’t the last time I encountered Elon, but it made the biggest impression on me. I found him extremely persistent, focused, and somewhat brash, but strangely genuine. With the exception of getting me removed from his account, I thought it was a fun encounter.

I can only report things I've heard from people who worked under him at SpaceX, but it seems that how good a boss he is hinges on what kind of personality you have.
Musk is extremely passionate about what his companies are trying to accomplish, and he generally expects those who work under him to share that same level of passion. If you do, he's the best boss in the world. If you don't, he's an absolute nightmare who injects added stress into every situation he's involved in.

Love / hate seems to be the most popular feeling between Elon Musk and his employees.
Think of Tesla and SpaceX (the two companies he’s invested most of his time into) as a family. A very disciplined, tightly knit family. Elon is the culmination of a passionate entrepreneur. If anyone gets in the way of Musk’s mission, he would personally get behind you to watch exactly what you are doing to make sure that it is done. He would tell you that you are holding up the mission and that the whole company is waiting on you. He is determined and brutal. If you are not proving prosperous then you are not an asset to the team, to the mission, and you aren't deserving of your job. People get fired left and right, the employees get berated for the smallest deficiencies, coffee is spit across the meeting table for being too luke warm… The whole nine yards.
However because these companies function as closely and as tightly knit as a family, the employees have seen both sides of Musk. His criticizing and passionately empowering side. For example, the mission control crew for the second and third failed attempts for the Falcon 1 was devastated. They had put in months work of 16–20 hour days just to see it fail. It marked the end of SpaceX because funding had run out. But Musk had called into mission control and told them it was going to be alright and that they needed to focus on the next mission. That they were going to get through it. Like a dad would after his teenager got his car into a wreck. Sure he was disappointed and dismayed, but he is not going to just throw everything away. He is a master at prevailing and encouraging people to do the same.
The workers who have gone through his berating and have gotten fired all seem to have this respect towards the man.

Startups are bloody hard and the reality is that 99% of them go nowhere, not really. Every now and then one wins the lottery and succeeds brilliantly. But its not by accident. You have to work twice as hard and smart as everyone else, not to mention be very lucky. There's no margin for error. Its a full throttle race to succeed and stay ahead. Intel's Andy Grove said it best - 'only the paranoid survive'. Elon's quest to create a self-sustaining human presence on Mars requires zeal and a unique mindset. And its definitely not about the money or going public. Future historians may well credit him with having saved the human race given our innate capacity for self destruction.

In one of his latest interviews he says he likes people that are working 80 hour weeks and at times of demand - 100 hours. If you`re one of these that are working hard, working smart and working as much as humanly possible, go work for SpaceX or Tesla.
