I so appreciate the positive attitude you had about being seated next to a child. As a mother, I really am touched by this.

This was on a flight home to Japan several years ago. The little girl next to me asked me, "What sound does a cow make?"
"Moo."
"Yeah!" She giggled and screamed. She was about 4 years old.
"And what sound does a pig make?", she asked.
I made some pig sounds. (oink, groan, squeal, grunt)
"Yeah!" Again she giggled and screamed. Her mother asked her to quiet down.
This went on for the whole flight whenever she could think of a new animal.
She eventually asked me nonsense questions like, "What sound does an octopus make?"
I make up octopus noises, clam noises and butterfly noises as best my imagination could muster.
She pulled out a coloring book and asked if I wanted to color.
"Sure." It was another 8 hours and I had nothing better to do.
So we colored red and blue striped zebras, polka dot elephants and pink lions.
She screamed a high pitch scream when I came up with new coloring ideas.
Eventually, she fell asleep and I talked with her mother. They were permanently moving back to Japan after living a few years in the states.
Having a cute, giggly, creative girl next to me on a flight was never something I imagined would be so fun. She was hilarious and somehow not intimidated at all.
I wonder how she's doing. That was probably 10 years ago now.
I have a picture somewhere that I'll upload when I get the chance.

Thank you so much. The girl is really to blame. She just started talking. She asked me a lot of silly questions that I answered in a silly way. We simply had fun.

Life is so much more fun when we allow our stuffy adult selves to be silly. Children bless us with the opportunities to do that.

I'd rather sit next to a child. Kids are cute and funny. I wish my granddaughters were still young. I started taking care of them when they were 3 and 6. My daughter needed a 24/7 babysitter because of her career. Those were the best days of my life. Kids are great!

I’d rather sit next to one too.
1. They are tiny compared to adults. I have very broad shoulders, so it’s ideal to not sit next to an adult.
2. They don’t really care how they come across to others in general, particularly before about 7 or so, so they just say whatever they want. (Example: I had a goatee and I thought it was soooo hawt… when I walked up to my 8 year old cousin and said ‘Hi!’ she grabbed it and dragged me down so we were face to face and said ‘This is ugly. Shave it off’, goodbye goatee…) This is refreshing and often delightful.
3. They are still creative and haven’t had the curiosity/creativity purged from them by parents, life, school, etc.
but seriously, the size thing is really the biggest selling point for being seated next to them on a flight…

Everybody always complains like sitting next to a small child on a plane is the worst hell imaginable. But I love kids (I have 5 myself.)

My daughter was flying Phx to Hawaii she needed a seat next to her so her husband could be seated. She asked the guy would he mind changing seats with her husband in a different row. The guy said no, She said OK if you don’t mind sitting next to a 2yr old all the way on the trip. The guy finally got up and moved.

I love children and you are the perfect passenger the way you entertained this little girl. I was flying with my two daughters to meet my husband who was in the Military stationed in Germany. We flew commercial and flew out of Dallas very early to Atlanta with a lay over and then boarded a plane to Frankfurt which was about 10 hours long. I was so tired on that last leg of the flight. My girls were 2 and 6 years old and I was so worried the 2 year old would be as active as she usually was but thankfully she slept the entire way but the last 30 minutes! We were sitting in the middle of the plane and a nice man in front of me by the window asked if my older daughter would like to see the sun come up and she so enjoyed it. She kept turning around to tell me the sun was coming up. It means a lot to any parent flying especially alone. Your story warmed my heart.

It is sad but some think if a man talks to a child he has an alternative motive. I am always very careful when I talk to a child unless they are related to me. It is sad but that is the way the world is. I am a father of a girl and I love children.

Indeed. I'm afraid to go to playgrounds to play due to this stereotyping and being in a city that practically no one knows me, when this would just be for revisiting part of my childhood. People go to jail for crimes they don't commit fairly often, as had happened with my own father for a short duration, due to the “guilty until proven innocent” stance that is often taken.

I tutored a 5th grader in reading for 2 years at her school. We had a lovely relationship. At our last session I gave her a farewell hug and was reprimanded by the principal. I was saddened that we’ve come to the point where sincere, innocent, genuine affection is so suspect….and yet Inunderstand the concern. Wish it were otherwise…

I know Sam, it is sad that you cannot even hug a child now especially as a man. It is just the way the world is and we have to accept the way it is. Thanks for your reply Sam. I wish you the very best of everything.

I had a similar experience once on a long flight from Dallas to Toronto. A family with a young child of around 1yrs old and their other daughter around 4yrs old got on the plane at the same time. The family sat in the row behind me with their baby and the 4yr old sat with me.
They only spoke Spanish and girl knew no English at all.
So we communicated with hands, gestures, and attempts to teach each other words in our languages by pointing to pictures in her colouring book.
It was an amazing experience and the parents were very appreciative as they sat behind us. I did a lot of business travels in those days and knew that landing could cause your ears to pop and that it can be a concern with a young child who had never done this before. So using gestures when the plane started to land; I made it fun and kept pointing at my own ears and crossing my eyes to show I could feel it too.
Thanks for reminding me of something I too did once on a long trip home.

Gosh! What an adorable child! I would have been willing to pay double the fare for the privilege of having her as my co passenger.
Kids transcend nationalities and races.
We adults are horrible!
Thanks for sharing this heart-warming experience.

I was on a train. A little boy about that age was traveling back to Texas I think it was with his grandma who had just recovered from being very sick. She was still weak and slept most of the time. The little boy sat with me and I ended up talking with him and we entertained each other. He was a sweet little kid. I have video of him on camcorder tapes. I didn't mind entertaining him. I've always loved children, probably because I've never really grown up myself. I helped to raise my granddaughters from the ages of 3 and 6--the best years of my life. Children are just wonderful!

Good story. Many years ago I boarded a British Airways flight in London to go to New York. I was by myself in first class until a couple sat across the aisle from me. The lady saw the book I was reading and said to her husband, 'how about that, look what this man is reading". He was the author. Had a really interesting flight talking with them and stayed friends for years.

I had a similar experience coming back from Europe. I had to get home to Canada, but I left my wife, 6 yr old boy and infant girl at my mother-in-law’s so they could spend the summer there.
On the flight home I was sat next to a woman and her 6 yr old son. He was travelling without his dad, and I was missing my son already, and we just had the best time. His mother was constantly worried that he was bothering me with all his questions, but I kept reassuring her it was okay with me. It really helped shorten the flight. When he needed a nap, his mom was blown away that I let him stretch his legs across my lap.
I just don’t understand people who don’t like kids.

The flight had only one open seat, the flight attendant said, so squeeze in. The middle seat was open between me and what appeared to be a businessman, who was dispassionately reading the newspaper next to the aisle when the announcement was made. He set his newspaper down and turned to me, with a strange grin.
“I bet,” he said, “we can have that empty seat here.”
“Oh?” Naturally I was intrigued.
“Start an argument with me. We can be so unpleasant no one will want to sit here.”
I immediately did, asking how he could dare consider something so selfish. It continued from there, with the two of us quietly snarling at each other and glaring daggers at anyone who looked like they even considered intervening or sitting between us.
The plane continued to fill. We ended up at some point reciting the Monty Python argument skit from somewhere in the middle, so we never ran out of material. Any topic we could think of, we argued about. Seats around us vanished. People hastily stood to let people slide in.
He never had to. The last person finally was seated, leaving the space between us open.
Immediately, his face switched from outrage to smug satisfaction and he extended his hand to me.
“Thank you, that was fun. I'd love to do that again sometime.”
Then he picked up his newspaper, shook it open, and continued to read. We said nothing else the rest of the flight.
I think about that guy every time I’m sitting next to strangers.

I'm curious why you thought he was interesting (which was the question)
Manipulative, selfish, good at gaming the system… maybe.
Interesting? Don't think so

Because I never meet people like that. It wouldn't have occurred to me. So it stuck in my mind for a long time afterwards, even though it's not something I do.
Whether or not it was ethical, it interested me.

A funny anecdote:
My father once happened to be sitting next to a Navy SEAL on a flight.
Being the charismatic gentleman that he is, my dad struck up conversation with this SEAL. Naturally, the SEAL started to divulge a bunch of cool war stories that impressed my old man. One of these involved being dropped into Grenada during the fiasco in the 80’s.
Eventually, as the conversation progressed, my father noticed something odd about the SEAL. He was acting uncontrollably nervous, sweating bullets (no pun intended), stammering and not to mention he had hammered down about 3 Scotches, on a morning flight no less.
My father was perplexed that this elite warrior was suddenly acting so jittery and unsettling out of nowhere. It sort of diffused the whole Navy SEAL demeanor.
Finally, my dad asked the SEAL:
“Hey man. I've noticed you've been acting very nervous. For a guy like you that’s been on the frontlines of battle, that has been all over the world, that is at the top of the top of all soldiers, what on earth has you so uneasy???”
His response:
“I'm on my way to my wedding.”

I once sat next to a guy on a flight from Tokyo to London. At some point he took a pill and quickly fell asleep only to wake 3 hours later fully refreshed. I told him that I’d noticed the pill and he offered me one. Before I took it, he explained that he was a US army medic and that the pill was used by the military and generally referred to as the ‘stop’ pill. I was almost immediately fast asleep and woke almost exactly 3 hours later feeling great. I asked him if there was a ‘go’ pill. He said there was but that I probably wouldn’t like it and he wasn’t handing them out anyway.

I was once flying from New York to Frankfurt.
Five minutes before landing, the plane started shaking uncontrollably. There was a violent storm outside - heavy rain, thunderstorms, and fog. I closed the window shades and waited patiently for landing.
Now I am someone who hates flying, I would avoid it whenever possible, but given that I travel a few times a year for work, I don’t have a way out of it. The best moment throughout the flight is right before landing when I feel a sense of relief and peace.
So the plane is about to land and I start collecting my belongings from under my seat. The plane was literally a few centimeters from the ground. Suddenly, the plane takes off again and starts roaming in the sky.
There was utter silence.
It was a weird feeling but none of us knew what was happening. A few minutes later, I started panicking. The man next to me sensed my panic and started chatting with me. He was so calm, so collected, so warm that I immediately started feeling better.
He told me that he flies frequently and this kind of scenario happens all the time (I believed him at the time).
He then asks me why I was travelling. I told him that I was heading back from an academic conference in New York as I am a PhD student. He then said that he was a professor at Stanford. I immediately smiled and mentioned how I’ve been wanting to visit Stanford for so long but never got the chance.
Something amazing happened then. While he was handing me his business card to contact him, the plane finally landed safely.
We were actually up in the air for 45 minutes. Time flew because of this kind man. I know today that he wanted to make me feel better and he went out of his way to sound positive and soothing. The pilot announced that the plane was having technical issues, wasn’t able to land, and the crew had to call in emergency for assistance. So it was pretty serious.
Fast forward 4 years later, I end up visiting Stanford as a scholar. I had coffee with this wonderful man and he admitted that he too was freaking out… but by focusing on remaining positive with the mission of calming me down, he was immediately able to overcome his fear. Positivity does wonders.
