Minute 13:30 was heartbreaking, we all hope for a better world, but it takes time and generations…

I grew up in the north east of India, when I went to Mumbai for the first time and see the train stations it was the craziest thing I’ve ever seen.

Ashiqur Rahman Akash
Fantastic and Heart Broken City.
Thus, Mumbai it's beautiful city ever built in the world.

ActiveDodger
Compelling documentary that speaks volumes beyond Mumbai. The world is divided between the rich and poor. The rich will inhumanely overshadow the poor. This has to stop. Freedom to the people!!!

Iliri Bardhyl
Less population = Better life quality.

Very excellent documentary. I was in Mumbai in 1984 and visited someone who lived in a high rise overlooking a horrific slum. In some ways, things don't seem to have changed that much.

needmoreramsay
Excellent documentary. You could make 10000 of these and I would watch them all. India is fascinating.

To deliver those food with their own coding system shows that the delivery guy is smart. And to know that he has to continue doing a job his father and grandfather did is a sad reflection on the lack of equal opportunity to all people no matter their class or caste. He has accepted his "destiny" to do nothing else but only deliver food is how the higher caste or upper class keep others down.

In my country there are poor people, but this is a new level. I can't imagine living like that.

The optimism, drive, and resourcefulness of Mumbaikar is an inspiration to us all. One day, Mumbai will be one of the greatest cities in the world.

I was in Mumbai in the early 80's and it densely populated then. Thousands of people entering the city everyday looking for a better life. What always amazed me was the work ethic of people. Recycling has always taken place there. I remember someone making a living knocking straight bend nails to resell. I also witnessed workers unx action in action. Bombay bhand means Bombay closed and nothing moves. Fond memories of places and people there. So long ago... I am almost sad to see the stark inequality increase over the decades. Don't know whether I want to see mumbhai again.

Emma Newman
That was a really interesting video. I enjoyed the education. I can see the trouble these poor people are in. I also felt sorry for these leopards. That’s not a sanctuary, that’s a prison. Us humans are constantly taking land and ruining ecosystem and food chains.
I also feel humble and appreciate all I have more. Some of these people don’t have clean water, or toilets. And they work so hard , long hours for little pay. Astonishing.

Monkey Business
The part where the man complained on camera about how small the apartment he was given but went on the say "I have NINE kids... How can we live in a place like this". I just shake my head. I'm not saying he should not have kid, but he was in no position to have as many kid as nine and then complain about poor living standard.

The Cosmological Eye
Wow, this was incredibly depressing. Between the stories of slum residents and the treatment of the leopards as humans pushed the city up against their territory... I dunno... people are so terribly selfish, amongst other things. Makes me want to just go disappear into a cave somewhere and never come back out.

Andrew Ame
I admire the hard working people in Mumbai

Iam living in The Netherlands and was kind of getting depressed. But after watching this iam much more positive and thankfull of my life.

In the time of Covid, the scene with the train station gave me immense anxiety. Even before Covid, large crowds in tight spaces made me nervous. It still does.

I have been to Mumbai before,I saw how people work, its really crazy in some parts of the world

Hina Sunniva
An eye opening documentary on degradation of society in the name of economic growth.
How tall and and how much can this city grow ? When city's past is better than its future, it is a time to worry. And Mumbai is not alone, this concrete growth is everywhere, even mid size cities are becoming mini Mumbai. Once green tropical place is all dry with pollution, concrete and people living like insects. Is this the growth we want ?

White Boi
I feel like if someone can revolutionize the way cities are built and how money can flow in them, places like this could have incredible futures

Jane Marie Fuentes
I was just here before pandemic and was almost shock about the poverty. If you live in a first world country and visited Mumbai you'll be culture shock. Expect to see slums everywhere and public transportation is non-existent

Rizzo R.
the roaming leopard around housing area part is quite scary, what a great documentary about Mumbai that most never seen before.

Kudos to DW for making nice nice documentaries. With due respect, western portrayal of India is always reduced to Mumbai. India also has beautiful places like Kerala, Goa, North East etc. Western media is also thrilled to portray about hunger and diseases, when it comes to Africa as a whole continent.

It is truly an incredible city, I would love to go back. As for the slum, well the portion I saw, everyone is busy making something, be it clothes, shoes etc.... amazing. Mumbai however really has a putrid smell.

Kathy Arias
I don't see how living in rented apartments in plain-looking buildings is seen as some kind of success just because it looks "modern" when owning your own land, even if not in the most sophisticated house, gives you more freedom housing-wise

MrJonslife
The amazing gap in infrastructure between India and China today is astonishing given that both countries started at the same level at the same time.

David Ginsberg
Just an amazing documentary. People do survive without a mask and manage living under poor circumstances- I recommend all westerns who fear virus and talk about "bullshit bingo" self-development in job/life to live in Dawari for a few months to change perspective! Bring this documentary to the world

Koffi Koudjonou
I have the chance to experience life in India for 4 years and yes, all these are true. However there are many other good sides of Mumbai that is not shown in the documentary and it is not fair. Beautiful parcs, world class restaurants, quality schools, high level universities, huge malls, metros ...
There are also advanced in technology for ex Uber, Ola, Swiggy, Zomato that are mostly used for delivery but you focused only on that ancient method.
People watching this documentary will only have a negative point of view about India.
Even before I went to India, I thought I would only see this bad side but I was positively surprised. So stop fooling people, show them both sides of the Indian society. Don't be bias!!!

Uber, Ola, Swiggy, Zomato

I live in Canada and we are 38 million in the whole country. Its hard for me to imagine a city with 22 million.

Rafique Hola
41:25 40 million population in a city is mind blowing. That's’ more than many countries.

Back then in 2009, a commuter train in Jakarta was just like this. But it's all changed in 2010 until now, Jakarta Commuters really enjoy the train just like the Japanese do in Tokyo, even in rush hour. No more open doors, hot temperatures, trash, or even pickpocket. I think Mumbai Government should learn from Japan or Indonesia who successfully adopted the Japan system. I feel sad to Mumbai Commuters who have to experience this.

Slum clearance in USA as late as 1970's there were slums in USA too: "As of June 1966, projects which had gained approval had clearance intended or completed for over 400,000 houses, displacing over 300,000 families. Within the clearance areas, 35% was proposed for residential redevelopment while just over a quarter was reserved for streets and footpaths. Although initially starting with wide political support, it became controversial over time.[5] Federally subsidized clearances ended in 1974, after funding over 2,000 renewal projects at a cost of around $50 billion.[2]"

It's nuts seeing those people hang onto that moving train I hope you guys get more trains and things get better sad to hear so many people die or get hurt don't take chances hanging onto a moving train

I think it's amazing that man worked so hard and is now living a nice life. He deserves it. I felt bad when he cried but I hope he's proud of himself. He should be. Here In America, Indians also work very hard. There is only one group of CN who don't. Indians, Asians and Hispanics all work very hard. Oh! And Africans that migrated here.

What I like about Mumbai watching this video, is the absence of gigantic commercial ads and neon lights advertising several products. I hope it stays that way.

I'm pretty moved by people's optimism even on an extremely crowded train.

I had spent a couple of months in Mumbai, It is difficult. I had studied the reasons for the problems of Mumbai. Some of them are
a) People from all over India migrate to Mumbai. The reason is most backwardness and lack of development of Hindi heartland. A city can tolerate a level of migration. The constitution of India is a limitation. Because of it, the city cannot impose restrictions on further migration.
b) The state of Maharashtra (Mumbai is its capital) is the major contributor of Tax. This tax money is diverted to the most backward and most populated states of North India.
c) Mumbai Suburban Railway is operated by Indian railways. Hence one can see old stations(mostly not maintained).
d) Slums are mostly created by migrant workers (some of them several decades ago). In spite of the initiatives of the government, people do not want to relocate to the other places (Mostly due real estate value).
Hence my suggestion is rather than using Mumbai as cash cow and transferring the funds to northern states, Mumbai money should be spent for Mumbai.
There must also be control on further migration.

Great documentary!
The funny thing was DW Translating English To English.
Couple of occasions the speakers were speaking English.anyways that fun factor is important too in the documentaries.
I have learned way too much .

Pretty much my upbringing in Kibera Slums in Kenya (largest in Africa), but my bro and I worked so hard to change the narrative.

Almost appears similar to the Victorian slums in the UK but Dharavi does seem to have a more positive aspect with some good quality retail businesses and souvenir shops. Saying that India and the UK have much in common with the class system and Indian food very popular here. Maybe a big dog shelter could be established for the strays so they do not offer easy pickings for the Leopards.
