I don't know why Xu Yuo became chief adviser of Yuan Shao in these <.< It was Feng JI ,Guo Tu ,Tian Feng and Ju shou ,Shen Pei were much better military advisers.

He really takes to heart knowing his enemies, because apart from Guan Yu so far he has played or controled every major figure fantastically!

Sometimes it's frustrating how Cao Cao's strategems only work because of the stupidity of his opponents. His plan to stall time was extremely risky for himself and could've easily gotten him killed. Anyone who knows his personality by now shouldn't ever bother accepting something like his invitation for tea. At that point, I would have just brought out the cavalry and archers and killed him or captured him while he's wide open although that may mean bad repercussions later in terms of reputation for honoring diplomacy.

I have to ask. How the hell did Yuan Shao being the bumbling fool that he is manage to acquire an army as large as 700,000 and conquer more territory than Cao Cao? Seriously were all his opponents before Cao Cao just as stupid as he was or even stupider? Maybe this is all ahistorical but I just find it very hard to believe that this fool was ever able to become this powerful. Even his brother Yuan Shu who was just as arrogant and self centered.

40:40 the main reason Yuan Shao can't win: all his advisors are fighting against each other. Men like Xu You and Tian Feng are probably not bad advisors, yet their quarrels are always hurting their faction and causes Yuan Shao's head to spin. Unlike Cao Cao who has Xun Yu, Guo Jia, and Cheng Yu who worked together to help Cao Cao.

Cao Cao in the early stages of his rise to power often ran into the problem of grain shortages right at the climax of his military campaigns. In later episodes, we see Zhuge Liang run into the exact same problems as well in his northern campaigns. The difference of course is that Cao Cao was willing to take risks- to bet everything on a total victory, whereas Zhuge Liang was far more cautious.

Aside from Yuan Shao's terrible indecisiveness, being surrounded by self-serving, corrupt, politicking advisers didn't help their cause. The struggle amongst the Yuan's officers contributed immensely to their defeat to Cao Cao.

Though this show hasnt touched on all of it, I think Cao Cao has several times executed traitors defecting to his side amidst a crisis. I'd rather have people betray my enemies and then immediately give them and give them an estate far off where I don't have to worry about their plotting rather than kill them and deter other future defectors.
Anyway, it's interesting seeing Cao Cao; he is capable of great ruthlessness and great mercy, yet remains true to himself. Definitely one of the most fascinating figures in history.

Though this show hasnt touched on all of it, I think Cao Cao has several times executed traitors defecting to his side amidst a crisis. I'd rather have people betray my enemies and then immediately give them and give them an estate far off where I don't have to worry about their plotting rather than kill them and deter other future defectors.
Anyway, it's interesting seeing Cao Cao; he is capable of great ruthlessness and great mercy, yet remains true to himself. Definitely one of the most fascinating figures in history.

When his defenders say it was an angry outburst to kill Xu You he says "Nah man I planned it."
